1 October 7, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 7, 2018 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia In today's first reading and in the Gospel, the reflection could easily be mistaken to focus on weddings, but I think there is more to be found in these verses. I know that people like weddings. They are fun events, all the talk about love and the nice clothes, the good food and all the other fun activities that go along with the wedding. The one part that does not thrill people to really focus on is the concept of covenant. Though not as exciting as the idea of romantic love, it is covenant love that is the real basis of a marriage. Even in today's second reading from the writings of St. Paul, he is pointing out the depth of real covenant love by talking about the sacrifice of Jesus for our salvation. Again, it is not romantic love that leads Jesus to offer his life for us, but it is love based in a covenant with us and for us. The very nature of the vows at a wedding is not simply to pledge the love of two people to each other, but to also vow themselves as a couple to God who is the author of that love. They join every aspect of their lives together and in it form an unbreakable bond that never is to break. A covenant by its very nature is an eternal uniting of two people to one common goal or understanding. That is why marriage is to be forever between the two people who enter into it. Covenants are not to be discarded by one person in the agreement and that is why Jesus is so harsh on the idea that a husband or wife without the consent of the other should be able to simply walk away. Now, we know that there are very legitimate reasons why people should not remain in a marriage. That is the reason that we have the annulment process and the Bible itself gives us a couple of grounds upon which a marriage can be dissolved, but those should be the exception. Today, people enter into marriage moved by emotions rather than covenant love. It is the idea of romantic love that stirs the hearts of people in thinking about weddings but it is the failure to fully grasp covenant love that causes that wedding joy to collapse in its search of a marriage bond. This is not to condemn those who have gotten a divorce. The Church does not want people to live in abusive relationships or to stay in a loveless relationship. The Church seeks to heal people who have entered into harmful relationships in fact and does not allow for remarriage after a divorce without an annulment as a way of offering time to reflect on past mistakes and to try to help the person to not make that mistake again. The person, once helped to grow, is free to enter into another marriage with the full joy and blessing of the Church. Many people who have gone through the updated process of an annulment have found it very helpful and healing. The annulment does not put blame on either person but seeks only to point out any shortcomings in decision making to show how certain situations led to a bad decision to enter into marriage. A covenant, like a marriage, must be entered into freely, without coercion and without reservation. That is why people should not be forced into marriage, arranged marriages are not allowed and that the Church does not approve of pre-nuptial agreements. The people entering into marriage must understand the nature of the covenant they are entering into and should not be intoxicated at the time of the vows. Neither party should enter into marriage because they want to get out of their home life, because they are pregnant, because they think this is the last chance to find someone, they are tired of being alone or because the "biological clock" is ticking. Love, real love, is based on mutual respect and a commitment to an eternal bond and not physical attraction, romantic concepts of our life together or anything else that does not reflect the nature of God's love for the Church and the Church for God. The beauty of love is that it is life giving, that we find a deeper meaning to our lives and that we experience the sacred in the daily living of the covenant. Like St. Paul teaches us, love is patient and kind, it does not boast in the wrong but rejoices in the good. Real love forgives and it bears the joys, sorrows and struggles of life. All relationships have ups and downs; it s part of life. Though life is never perfect and it does not always work out the way we want, the Bible teaches us that love can be perfectly lived. It is the one thing that Jesus commands us to do perfectly. To love God and to love each other. Further, Christian marriage therefore sacramental. It has a sacred nature and that is why a Catholic marriage is always to be celebrated in church. We do not hold marriages outside of the church. All sacraments belong to the Church. A wedding is not about the bride and groom; it is not "their" day. Sacraments share in the mystery of God's love and that public celebration, that sacramental reality should be celebrated where the community gathers to share their faith in God; a church. We do not allow the couple to write their own vows because even the vows must reflect the nature of marriage and the importance of God in the life of the couple. Again, it is not just about the love of the couple for each other, but their lived love in response to God. I will often remind the couple that people are to come to know the mystery of God as a result of their love for each other. It surprises me still how many people do not know that as a Catholic, they must be married by a Catholic priest or deacon for their marriage to be recognized as valid in the Catholic Church. Too often people are still swayed by the continued on Page 3

3 October 7, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 things they see on TV or by what their friends do. Marriage, not weddings, are beautiful things because they reflect the love of God and not novel ideas or popular trends like friends becoming "ministers" for $12 online just so that the wedding will be officiated by someone who knows the couple well. I have a novel idea if people are looking for one, get to know the priest or deacon by your regular presence at church and he will know you just fine when you decide to get married. We have to take our approach to marriage seriously and we have to base that all on the fundamental concept of covenant love. If you are struggling in your marriage, seek help and begin to pray together. If you your marriage has ended, please come see us about getting that marriage annulled and if you are divorced and remarried without an annulment, please come see us so we can get that taken care of and have your present marriage convalidated. Have a great week and God bless. Two things to remember about Halloween: 1) Please remember to save your leftover candy to send to our college students or military personnel after the holiday. Parents will be asked to give us updated information about their children so that we can get the candy grams to them efficiently. 2) I will again be passing out full size candy bars and other treats for children with allergies again this year. Please plan on stopping by the rectory on Halloween night. Page 3 Bible Study You are always welcome to join us for our twice a month Bible Study on Monday nights from 7:00-8:30pm in the Life Center at Holy Family. Please bring a Bible, and if you do not have a New American version, we do have extra copies for you to use and take home with you. These bibles are available for a small donation at both Holy Family and St. Augustine. It is never to late too join and it is always easier to come if you bring a friend or come with someone who is already coming. High School age and older are most welcome. Thank you Thank you to all of you who have already pledged to the CSA and either paid off your pledge or are making payments. We are almost paid off at both parishes and soon will be receiving our refund checks. Please keep making those payments, or if you have not yet pledged to please do so. There is no better time to make that unexpected gift to the parish. I also want to remind you that if you are planning on a larger donation at Christmas, to please do it through the CSA as well. Remember that the CSA quota is based upon our yearly donation plus Christmas collection, but CSA refunds are not considered taxable income and do not impact the yearly quota. So please consider the CSA as an avenue to share your treasure with your parish community. Thank you and God bless you for your kindness. Please check at which parish you are registered and fill out the personal information on the CSA pledge card below. Fill in your pledge and payment amount and place it in the collection basket or return to the parish office. Thank you. In the classroom, students have created a job listing using some responsibilities, requirements, and wonderful rewards of discipleship that will help us better understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ: HELP WANTED Summary: The job of a disciple is to follow and act like a witness to Jesus. To be a disciple, you are responsible for maintaining your title by following the ways and rules of the Church. Responsibilities: Complete the sacraments of initiation Attend church every Sunday Go to Reconciliation at least twice every year Try your best not to sin Please remember to continue to use the paper recycling bin which has been placed in the end of St. Augustine s parking lot. The bin is free and will be emptied by the recycling company each month. The recycling company then sends a payment for the weight of the paper in the bin to St. Augustine School. This also boosts our score as a Green School.
