1 December 18, 2016 The Parishes of Page 1 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia Now that we have celebrated the Fourth Sunday of Advent, our attention clearly turns toward Christmas. With that being said, I want to stress the importance that we attend mass for this Holy Day, but also I want to put a special emphasis on how we treat our guests, those who do not normally attend our parish because they are visitors or because they do not generally attend mass. The way we welcome them is an important first step in how they will understand that are special to us and important to our community. Enough with the jokes about those who only come twice a year; if they are not welcomed with joy why would they want to return? How does making them feel not welcomed make us look? We talk about praying for people to return but when they do, we make fun of them and make them feel less than the rest of us. So, they sit in the spot you always sit in; find another spot. The mass is the same from either side of the church or from the front or the back. God willing, they will be back in your spot the following week as well. Which mass to attend? To help you make plans for all your holiday events, we have tried to make it as simple as possible to attend mass by adding an extra mass on Christmas Eve. There is mass at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight at both parishes. The first mass tends to be the most crowded of all the masses, so if you don't like crowds, or noise, or incense, you make want to choose to attend the 6:00 p.m. mass. We will be blessing the crib at both the 4:00 p.m. and midnight masses with incense - a word of warning for those who do not like incense. There will be no incense at the morning masses on Christmas Day. There are also two masses in the morning as well, so between the two parishes, ten masses should give everyone ample opportunity to attend mass. Spread the word and let people know the mass times to celebrate the birth of Christ by focusing on him rather than ourselves. God bless. Thank you: Thank you to all of you who have helped to decorate the church inside and out, to Brian who does so much around our parish and for helping me decorate the front of the rectory, to our ushers, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, servers and choir members who have been doing double duty in many cases, and to our sacristans who never fail to prepare everything perfectly for our communal worship of God. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts not simply during special times but throughout the year. I also want to thank the staff who have been so helpful throughout this time of transition. We are all very fortunate to have such wonderful people working at our parish communities. To all of you as well, thank you for your welcome and for your support. I feel very fortunate to be here serving the Lord among you. Thank you and God bless you all. Let it snow... In having the conversation with the staff, on those days when the school is closed because of bad weather, we will not be having mass that morning. Simply put, if the roads are not good and it is unsafe for children, then it is not safe for our older members who could easily fall and break something and that could lead to a lot of problems for them. So, if the weather is bad, watch mass on TV but stay inside and do not risk injury for a daily mass. The mass intention will simply be moved to the next scheduled mass. On the other had, if there is only a delayed start at school, we will have mass as scheduled. It is only on the days that school is closed due to bad weather we will cancel daily mass. The decision to close the school or have a delayed start is based upon the decision of the Richmond Public Schools. Thank you to them for sending out people to check the safety of roads early in the morning on those bad weather days. Continued on Page 3

3 December 18, 2016 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Holiday Office Hours: During the holidays, I want the staff to be able to enjoy time off with their families as well and so since the Holidays are during the weekend, we will be having reduced hours during the week between Christmas and the New Year holiday. We will also be closed on the Monday after the New Year. If there is anything you need that can't wait, please feel free to call the rectory. New flooring: Thank you to the St. Augustine Altar Sodality that funded the new flooring in the St. Augustine rectory entryway. The old flooring was removed and repaired so that it is now level and less of a trip and fall hazard. The walls have had the wallpaper removed and they have been repaired and painted. The parish did not pay for the repairs to the wall or the paint or the labor. It looks very clean and freshened up after what look like years of neglect. Thank you ladies for your support and for all you do throughout the year. Christmas time at the rectory: Even though I have not been here a long time, you may notice that I like to decorate for the seasons and make the house look inviting and lived in. I believe the outside perception that people receive is important to making them feel welcomed when they come inside to our parish. The decorations outside are also part of the decorations inside. Since, this is your house and I just get to Page 3 live here while I am the pastor, you are welcomed to stop by and see the various trees and decorations at the rectory. I have not put up all of my trees (24 in total) this year, but there are some trees in the office area at St. Augustine and a couple at Holy Family. Next year I may try to put up even more. Thank you for allowing me to decorate the house and I hope you like it. Reply to a question I received: I received a note in an envelope about having a holy day mass in the morning at Holy Family. I agree that there should be at least one in the morning at Holy Family as well, as long as people actually attend the mass. The attendance for weekday holy day of obligation masses are generally low, even if they are obligatory, but on our part, we have to make sure there are enough masses for people to attend. I will talk to the staff and we will look into adding a mass at Holy Family during the next holy day. Thank you for your comments. Howard Street House: Finally, a quick update on the sale of the Howard Street house. Two bids were received and they have been sent to the AOD for acceptance of one of the bids. It is their decision and not ours. Once the decision has been made, we will proceed with the sale of the house and the removal of the tax bill from our costs. We still have two rental properties on Gleason Street that are empty. If anyone knows someone who would like to purchase the house to move it off the lot, please have them contact the rectory. 4 Page 4 F a i t h M a t t e r s December 18, 2016 Christian Service and the Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone for coming out to have brunch with Santa. Santa loved our parish and was very pleased with all the young boys and girls he had a chance to visit with. Hope you all had a good time. A heartfelt thank you to Santa for taking the time to stop by our parish during his busy season. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus for preparing breakfast. Stay tuned... Information and Training Meeting will be scheduled after the holidays in the St. Augustine Parish Hall (Due to inclement weather the informational meeting on December 11th was cancelled) Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is an age-appropriate opportunity for children to celebrate a concurrent Liturgy of the Word in a nearby space and then return to the main assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children experience the same ritual and hear the same scriptures, but proclaimed in simplified language. The most notable difference is that the homily message is delivered as an interactive dialogue. Who can participate? All children are welcome. No pre-registration is necessary. Please understand that this is not Childcare; the children are only gone for approximately minutes. They ll return during the Offertory preparation. CLOW is most appropriate for Pre-school through 3 rd grade. How will it work? After the Introductory Rites, the celebrant will invite the children and the volunteer leaders forward to be dismissed. The leaders will proclaim the readings and gospel, lead the children in singing a Psalm response, share the main message, and conclude with a simplified creed and intercessory prayers before taking the children back to rejoin their parents. This is not a Sunday School format. There are no crafts, coloring pages or snacks offered. Which mass? At the 9:00am mass at St. Augustine and the 10:30am mass at Holy Family. We ll need at least 10 or 12 people at each parish. For more information or to get involved, contact Susan Finley in the Faith Formation office at either parish. June 16-18, 2017 A huge thank you to all the Christian Service Committee members for baking delicious treats. Thank you to all those who helped big and small. Carmel, Emmett Wednesday, December 21st, 7:00 St. Augustine, Richmond Mail Call Q. Aren t there at least two places in the Bible that clearly state God had a beginning? If God truly had no beginning then what was He doing before the beginning? A. The only two passages that I can think of you might have misinterpreted are: 1. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Neither passage refers to God s beginning, but, rather, to the time when God began to create. John writes in the beginning was the word, note the word was is past tense, which means the Word (Jesus) existed before the beginning. The Second Greatest Story Ever Told a presentation by Fr. Michael Gaitely, MIC Learn about the lives of St. Pope John Paul II and St. Faustina, their important roles in the history of Divine Mercy, and discover how it crucially affects all of us! Course is open to all! (Requirement for new Prayer Ministers) Classes begin Friday, January 13, 2017 at 6:30 pm in the Divine Mercy Missionary Center. For questions or to enroll, please call Marion Webber at (810) ext John 1:14 goes on to tell us the Word was made flesh. It is interesting to note that most of the scientific community today adheres to the Big Bang Theory. That is, the universe exploded into existence out of nothing. Some of these physicists believe that before matter existed, information had to have already existed in order to cause this explosion. In other words: in the beginning (of creation) was (already existing) the Word (Jesus). What was God doing before the beginning? When asked this question St Augustine replied, Since God created time when He created the universe; there was no before. Once again, it would be far easier for a gerbil to fully and completely comprehend Einstein s Theory of Relativity than for humans to understand God. The Good News is: We don t need to fully understand God or His Word. All we need to know that He created us, He loves us and He has redeemed us from eternal death by going to the cross and dying for our sins. 10 St. Augustine School Page 10 December 18, 2016 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Welcome to the fourth week of Advent! This week we eagerly await the celebration of our Savior s birth. During this time of anticipation we use short special prayers in the church called O Antiphons. They are called that because they begin with a one-letter word O. They are recited from December 17 th through December 23 rd. Each short prayer names a title given to Jesus by a prophet in the Old Testament, and we use those titles to praise Jesus for the things he has done for us. We ask him to help the world by coming to all people. We are most familiar with the O Antiphons when we sing O Come O Come Emmanuel. The fifth graders made calendars that illustrate and name each title for each day. They are hanging in the hallway when you come in to school. Besides the calendars, the students have been very busy with special projects, reading for minutes each month, working on mini labs in science, and reflecting on the Advent Season by completing a prayer page each day. The Fifth graders along with fourth grade went to help at Gleaners just before Thanksgiving. They pack 600 back pack lunches for kids in need. They were so excited when they were working. Many of our students were surprised to learn that there were children who go to school hungry each day. They are very thankful that they have enough food to eat each and every day. Like the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th graders, the fifth graders are preparing for the school wide spelling bee and the Academic Olympics. Both of these activities are new to the students, and they are very excited about participating in them. Along with my fifth graders, we would like to wish you a very blessed week filled with hope, anticipation, and love.
