1 The Parishes of Page 1 Third Sunday of Advent John answered them all, saying, I am Baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. Luke 3:16a MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia In today's readings we hear about how Jesus came to free us from sin and death. Think about that for a second. To be freed from something means we have been held captive by, controlled by or filled with fear. Too often when we think of Christmas in our secular dominated society we think of love and togetherness that we share with each other, but we do not really reflect on why Jesus came in the first place. It is not enough to realize that he came if we do not realize why he came. He is not the unexpected knock on the door, for example, when we see someone we do not expect to see only to ask the inevitable question, "what are you doing here"? We really do know why Jesus came. This love which frees us from that which possessed us, springs up a profound truth to realize that we are no longer held captive by it. We are no longer under the power that once controlled our lives. The fact that Jesus came into the world was the beginning of the unwrapping of the mystery of God's unending love for us. It was not enough that Jesus came into the world because he would still have to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. Christmas is a wonderful season, but the mystery of our salvation is not found completely in the incarnation. It would have to be fully realized in the passion, death and resurrection as well. This season has become about everything but our salvation and the mystery of God's profound love. I joke that if you take the Christ out of Christmas, you still have mass and that brings us back to Christ anyway. There is no way to really celebrate Christmas without Christ. We do not "have" Christmas, we share in the mystery of it. You can open gifts and have family gatherings any time you want, but Christmas comes on the 25th of December and lasts for 8 days! We need that time to really contemplate this mystery. After all the running around is done, the gifts are put away and the parties are finally over, we get 8 days to sit in front of the manger scene and think about not what we got as gifts, but the one gift that we were given by God. Stuff is nice, but freedom from sin and death is eternal. We may forget who gave us the ugly sweater, but we should never forget who gave us eternal life. continued on Page 3

3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 So, before we get into the final week before Christmas and the hustle of trying to get everything "in," make sure that after the 25th you plan time to just sit and think about what happened on that first Christmas night and what it lead to on Easter Sunday. God came to give us freedom from sin and death. We are no longer captives, we are no longer condemned, we are redeemed and it all started on a quiet night, in a small town on the edge of the dessert when a baby was born for us, a child who is Christ the Lord. God bless you all. So, lest we forget: 1) We want to make sure we are all extra kind over the next few weeks, especially at mass and in the parking lots before and after mass. Make room in the pews. Greet the people next to you if you do not know them and be happy to answer any questions they may have. Please follow the rules about entering and exiting the parking lot and take a look around you to pick up any stuff off the pews before the next mass. Thank you. 2) Please invite people to come to mass with you. Keep praying for all those who will come to mass but do not come on a regular basis so that they may experience Christ in a new way this Christmas. We pray with the anticipation of Christmas miracles in the lives of many people this year. 3) Remember that we will allow you to save seats but if the people you are expecting do not come at least 5 minutes before mass, we are going to give those seats away to people who may be standing. 4) There are a number of masses at both parishes being offered on Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day. Please plan to attend a mass that gives you a chance to really pray while still having time to share in the joy of the season with family and friends. Masses are at 4:00 pm, 6:00 pm and midnight at both parishes. Christmas Day masses are at 7:30 & 9:00 am at St. Augustine and 10:30 am at Holy Family. 5) Remember that January 1st is a holy day of obligation. Please plan now to attend mass. Masses are scheduled: Monday, December 31st at 4:30pm at Holy Family and 5:00 pm at St. Augustine. Tuesday, January 1st, Masses are 9:00 am at St. Augustine and 10:30 am at Holy Family. Look for the complete holiday mass schedule on page 5. Page 3 Glad to be back home My trip to Malta went very well and the celebration of the novena and the feast day were very moving. The priest who preached the novena did a wonderful job of reflecting on Mary's words at the wedding at Cana and on those of Pope Francis in how we are called to serve. In both Mary and the Holy Father's words, we are being invited to "do what He (Jesus) tells us to do". The days before the feast and on the feast were filled with large numbers of people coming to mass, going to confession and sharing in the work of making sure the celebration went off without a hitch. The weather was good and the procession with the statue was a joyous way to wrap everything up. Thank you for allowing me to attend. It really serves me as a time of spiritual renewal, a retreat in fact. I prayed for you daily and raised you up through the intercession of Mary our mother. If you are interested in looking at pictures of the feast, you can always check out the Facebook page that the parish in Cospicua Malta has. Have a great week. 10 Page 10 St. Augustine School St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Tidings of Great Joy Jesus has taught us many important morals and values. Included is the most important Commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is similar: Love your neighbor as yourself. Taken from Matthew 22: With Jesus as our guide, the library at school can definitely tell that he has been at work on the hearts of people in our community that have made donations to the library. Overjoyed with this gift (donation) we are able to purchase new books that have been in the Wish List jar. Students can write down books they d like to see in the library and now we are able to fill these requests. The library is becoming updated with some great reading materials and supplies that excite, thrill and bring adventure (and smiles) to all ages. Yes! This was the answer to our prayers. Word has spread and many others have came forward with gifts for the library as well. The library is an exciting place to be and we are all grateful for the loving hearts that helped put new books on our shelves. Thank you Richmond Community Education Foundation (RCEF) and for those who have purchased books to help us grow. We are truly grateful for the families that have made contributions in November and December: Curtis-Smith, Delaney, Dunker, Kammer, Grifka, Newman, Nytko, Smith, Schweihofer, Waterstraat and A True Fan.
