1 August 26, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia "Lord, to whom shall we go?" This question of Peter in the Gospel of Matthew is a very poignant one for that moment and our own. Peter was reacting to a question from Jesus as people were leaving because they could not accept what Jesus was teaching about the Eucharist. Jesus asked them, "Do you also want to leave?" At no other point in the teaching of Jesus does he confront the disciples so forcefully. It emphasizes the importance of the Eucharist for the life of the Church. It must be at the heart of our lives as disciples and in fact I would say that it is impossible to be Catholic without a profound understanding of the importance of the Eucharist. It is not enough to be a good person, to do nice things for others, to be kind or respectful. Though all good things, discipleship takes on a more profound meaning that is grounded in the sacrificial and servant relationship established by Christ at the Last Supper. You can be a good person without being a Christian, but you can't be a Catholic without the Eucharist. To be a good person to others does not require you to love the person, does not challenge you to confront your own sinfulness or ask you to serve the Christ in the other person. I can be a good person by giving money to the poor, but a disciple of Jesus seeks more than just to help but to change the lives of the people they encounter and to be changed by the encounter. A good person may share of their time, talent and treasure, but a disciple, a Eucharistic person is willing to be broken and shared for the sake of others. To put this in its most simplistic form, I offer you a sports analogy. There is a difference in being a fan of a team and being on the team. A fan may know everything about every player and the history of the team. A fan may purchase a season ticket, go to all the away games, tailgate before games and purchase various merchandise, but at the end of the day, they are a fan and they sit in a seat on the sidelines. Jesus is asking us not to be fans, but actually part of the team, to affect the actual outcome of the game and not simply lend your voice to the crowd and make noise at points in the game. A good person is a fan; a team member is a disciple. In today's first reading, when confronted with the disobedience of the people, Joshua tells the people that they can choose as they please, but "for me and my household, we will serve the Lord". Joshua was ready to be on the team. Peter, choose to follow Jesus and so should we. Last week I spoke at mass about the need to develop critical thinking skills because not everything we read or hear is true or has the same value. When we give equal weight to the actions or opinions of others that are contrary to the Scriptures or the teachings of the Church, we are making a mistake in judgment. We are not choosing the same as Joshua or Peter. We are saying to God, sometimes we will go to you and sometimes we will go with this person or that. But Peter reminds us, "that you (Jesus) alone have the words of eternal life." If that is true, why would we listen to the "opinions" of others? Why would we follow trends? As Catholics, the Eucharist is central to our lives not simply in regards to attending mass each week and receiving the Eucharist, but as importantly, to become what we have received. Like Jesus who gave his life for us and was willing to be broken and shared, we too must do the same for the world and continue the work of salvation in our own time and place. Let's go team! God bless you all. continued on Page 3

3 August 26, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 St. Monica and St. Augustine: On Monday of this week we celebrate the memorial of St. Monica who was the mother of St. Augustine. St. Monica is the patroness of mothers because she prayed for the conversion of her husband from his pagan ways for 30 years. Often people think she prayed for the conversion of her son, but the prayer was more for the conversion of her husband who was finally baptized. St. Augustine was baptized at the age of 33, due to her prayers and the teaching of St. Ambrose. The memorial of St. Augustine follows on Tuesday. It is the perseverance in prayer that is the highlight of the life of St. Monica and one that we should all seek to model. Things will happen, though not always in our time. How important is it to us? Are we willing to work for it, to remain faithful to the prayer over a long period of time or are we only looking for a quick response? Faith requires us to believe that our prayers are being answered, but the response to our prayers may not always be what we expect or want. Faith and faithfulness are essential elements to the process of praying. I encourage you, like St. Paul, to pray without ceasing. School Starts Monday!!!!!! Just a reminder to all registered students at St. Augustine Catholic School, that the first day of class is Monday. If you want your child(ren) to attend our school, please register them as soon as possible. Some grades still have openings. Four year old pre-school now has a wait list. There is room in three year old pre-school. Please sign up this week so that your student is not missing out on the wonderful experience of being in a Christ centered school. At St. Augustine Catholic School, we start each day with prayer, have daily religion class, incorporate our faith in our teaching and discipline and strive to create educated and formed disciples for Jesus. If this is something you are looking for, now is the time to make sure your child is registered. Low $1,200 tuition available for the first year and scholarships are available to families from both St. Augustine and Holy Family. Take advantage of these great offers. Thank you. Page 3 Congratulations I want to congratulate all those who participated in the Armada Fair recently. I was happy to see many of you there and to see the success of your hard work. I really enjoyed seeing many of our young people participating in the 4 H programs. I want to take this opportunity to encourage other young people to get involved with the 4 H programs near you. Again, congratulations. Youth Group Just a reminder that all high school age teens are invited to participate in our youth group programs. 5 August 26, 2018 E V A N G E L I Z A T I O N Page 5 Mail Call Q. I am a senior citizen. Growing up Catholic, on what now seems to be another planet, I seem to remember the nuns taught that having a body cremated was forbidden by the Catholic Church. Am I wrong? If not, what happened? A. No, you are not wrong. From the very earliest days of Christianity, cremating the dead was forbidden by the Church. Cremation was a practice of pagans as well as those who denied Christianity s teaching of a physical resurrection. Cremation was seen as a final act of defiance. This prohibition was lifted by the Church in Since the Church teaches that cremating a body does not affect an eternal soul, there are no doctrinal objections to the practice. Catholics may now be cremated so long as cremation does not represent a denial of the belief in the resurrection of the body (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2301). Burying the dead is one of the 7 Corporal Works of Mercy. Therefore, the Church requires that cremains be treated with the same reverence and respect as corporal remains. Furthermore, cremains must be interred in a Christian cemetery, crypt or mausoleum. Those who are cremated are eligible to receive the sacraments and funeral rites. This holds true as long as the decision to be cremated was not meant by the deceased to be a declaration of a denial of Christian dogmas, the precept of a secret society, or hatred of the Catholic Church. The Church also has specific prohibitions for the cremains of the faithfully departed. A person's ashes must not be kept in a home or other type of residence. Cremains are not to be scattered or divided up in any way. The practice of making mementos, pieces of jewelry or other objects of the ashes is strictly forbidden. The lifting of this prohibition is not meant to suggest that the Catholic Church now prefers cremation over a full burial. The Catholic Church's preference is still a full burial. According to the Church, to honor the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, full burial is the most fitting way to express our faith in the resurrection of the body. Burial, whether full body or cremains, in a sacred place allows family and other loved ones to visit the grave site as a reminder to pray for the dead. If the above guidelines are not followed, the Church must deny funeral rites. When the deceased has requested the scattering of their ashes or cremation for reasons contrary to the Christian faith, a Christian funeral must be denied to that person according to the norms of the canon law. For several years we have been supporting a Missionary Priest in India and he asks for more rosaries than we can accommodate at this time so we thought we would like to try to make them. We have several women in the parish who know how to make rosaries and would be willing to teach you. We would not begin this venture until September, but would like to know if there is interest among our parish family. We can sit down and work out a schedule that would accommodate the majority of those interested. If you think you would like to evangelize, meet more of your Parish family, and do a good deed, please call the office or Marlene Brown at
