Joe Mallia 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Now that "summer vacation" has ended and school has begun, the life of the parish is really going to be picking up steam again. That will mean that there will be a lot of activity, meetings, functions and so on which further means that we are going to need a lot of volunteers as well. That brings us to a very important thing to think about - helping around the parish. The simple truth is, that whenever you have an organization, there will always be those who step up to help and those who do not. No matter what group you have, it always seems that the same people are the ones who are doing all the work. That is because, inevitably every group falls into a pattern of maintenance and not mission. I would like to share my theory on why that is. One reason is that we are not very good at bringing people into the mission. We have a small group planning and making decisions and then at the end, we say we need people to help us - but at that point they are simply worker bees; there is not much buy-in to really involve the people in the process of creating and supporting the work. People are valuable and so is the time they seek to share with others, so our approach to the mission of the parish must seek to be respectful of the person and their time. That means that the work we do must be worthy of people and their time; we can not just do things for the sake of doing it. Further, we must invite people into the process from the start, recognizing their gifts and talents and calling them forth for the betterment of the whole. In planning meetings we must hold to agendas, keep the meeting to an appropriate length of time and not get side tracked. If our meetings are productive, then people will be happy to come, and by being respectful of their time, they will know exactly what the commitment is. We should never meet just for the sake of having a meeting. The second reason people do not volunteer more is that when they do volunteer, the people who have been doing it for years are not open to new ideas; they are not welcoming. Simply saying, this is the way we have always done I is not in the end a valid reason for still doing it. If our "group" is struggling to find members, maybe we have to ask ourselves is what we are doing supporting the mission of the parish? Do people know what we do and why we are doing it? Does our role need to change and does it still serve the same need? Do we need to adjust or focus, the name of the group? We have to ask ourselves, do we want more people to join so that we can keep doing the same things or do we want more people so that we can serve more people? The one focuses on the actions which often do not inspire others, but the other focuses on people which engages their minds and hearts. In today's world, people will participate if what is being done is creating a positive result; people are not interested in just working to maintain something for the sake of maintaining it. A third reason people do not volunteer comes from them. Even if we invite people, even if we are welcoming and we are open to new ideas and new ways, even if we do everything right and have everything in place so that people will be able to buy in to the process and the project because it is worthy of their time and effort, they still may not want to volunteer. We can only do so much and some people simply will not step up to help, but that does not mean that we should stop trying to reach out, to evaluate what we are doing, how we are doing it or even why we are doing it. Just because some people will not come to events or join our group, does not mean that what we are doing does not have value. We are never going to get everyone, but just because we don't does not mean we have failed. Maybe we need to think of new things that need to be done and we can invite new people to lead. The biggest danger we have is the fostering of an attitude of fatigue, failure and irrelevancy. These attitudes are recipes for disaster. As we start off a "new year" of parish activity, let us move forward with a renewed sense of mission and not become pessimistic about what lays ahead. If we start off with an attitude that some things are going to fail, why are we doing this again, or any other negative attitude, I will guarantee that it will in the end fail. If you are feeling overwhelmed, feeling negative about the ministry you are involved in, then do yourself a favor and step aside. If you are not open to change or to welcoming new people, then maybe you might think of allowing someone else to lead. That is not saying that you have not done good things, but we all must realize if we have become simply actors in a routine rather than ministers involved in a mission, then we are becoming roadblocks to success; and the mission is simply the building up of the kingdom of God and the people of God. W. Edward Deming has become one of my favorite people to read for a variety of reasons, but one of his more famous quotes is "It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory". If we want to do more than survive, if we want to thrive, then we must be willing to change, to grow and to be empowered not by the work, Continued on Page 3

If you feel that the work of building up the kingdom and building up the people of God is important, then I want you to volunteer, to be a part of the ministry as you see fit - you are welcome and you are valued. If there is something you are called to do, that you have a real passion for, then we want to work with you to see how we can do it. It is a new year and with a new pastor and it is a time of critical review of our parish, our school and our approach to ministry. This is a start of a rebirth of why we are here and what we want to be about. Dr. Deming is right you know, survival is not mandatory, so if you want there to be a parish into the future, it will not depend ultimately on me, but on you embracing the mission and making it your own. I told you that I am here to help you to have the parish you want and that will mean that all of you will need to assume roles within the community to help it grow. I invite all of you to pray about what you are doing at the parish and if you wish to keep doing it; and others to pray about what you are not doing and what maybe you should be. God bless you all. I am very grateful to all of you. - Remember there is still time to sign up at attend St. Augustine Catholic School for this school year. Also we still have opportunities for any child wishing to play sports for St. Augustine to join. 4 Page 4 F A I T H M A T T E R S 10 Points on Good Stewardship for Students 1. God has given you the gift of intellect and it should be used wisely. Do not try to just get by in your classes. Offer your best effort and cultivate your intellect so you can become the best student possible. 2. The work you do in class is your gift to God. At this time in your life, you are called to be a student. What you do in class is your unique offering to God. 3. Don t waste the gift of time. For generations, students have put off studying or class projects until the last-minute. That is being a poor steward of one of God s greatest gifts: time. Learn to manage this precious resource. 4. Always remember you are a part of a community, even if you don t feel like it. Unless you are homeschooled, other students trying to make sense of growing up and the need for school surround you, and at that, even homeschoolers have communities that they see periodically. You are never alone in the jungle of school and there are peers, parents, and school staff that are willing to help you discern what is best for you. 5. Be grateful for the chance to be in school. Millions of children all around the globe have had the chance to attend school taken from them. Their futures are severely compromised because they are missing the chance to learn basic knowledge that will allow them to prosper in the world. Never take your ability to attend school for granted. 6. God is calling you today in your classroom. Perhaps it is through a classmate, a teacher, or a circumstance, but somehow God is asking something of you each day. Be aware and stay mindful of all those who cross your path each day. Something or someone very important might cross your path, never to return again. 7. Hold yourself accountable. Don t fall into the temptation of slacking off, not doing your work, or even worse, cheating. Integrity is a precious gift that should never be tossed away. No one else is responsible for your actions except for YOU. 8. Embrace the entirety of your life as a student. Growth in school is about more than books and subjects. God has filled this world with people to meet, sports to play, and moments to rejoice in life. Don t let this time pass you by and get involved. 9. Begin and end each school day with prayer. When you awake, offer the day and all your efforts of the day to God, and then when the day is over, spend time with God reflecting on how you succeeded and how you failed as a good steward and disciple of Jesus. Allow God to walk with you throughout your day by creating bookends of prayer for your day. 10. Stay committed. The school year can be long. Make a commitment to stay focused and not fall behind. The good thing about the times we fail in that commitment is that we can recommit ourselves and begin again. Have an awesome school year and always keep God as the main thing! Joe Mallia While many of us were out of town celebrating summer s last hurrah, things were happening here at St. Augustine and Holy Family. On Saturday September 3, 2016 Bishop Michael Byrnes Installed our new Shepherd, Rev. Joseph Mallia, as Senior Pastor of Holy Family Parish. Thanks to all that participated at the Holy Family Parish Dialogue last December, and St. Augustine s Parish Dialogue in May. We shared food and fellowship and commenced the evening with prayer, faith sharing and responses to the Archdiocese of Detroit s questions on: Encounter How do we encounter Jesus?; Grow How do we grow as disciples?; Witness How we give witness to Christ s mercy? The gathering was truly filled with the Holy Spirit as the groups talked and presented their responses. All data from the evening was sent to the Archdiocese of Detroit to be combined with all the other parish dialogue responses throughout our Archdioceses. This collection from all the parishes will be used for the upcoming Synod in November. Stay tuned for future Bulletin articles to give you more detail of this vibrant powerful event called the Synod. Carmel, on September 15th through September 17th. On Thursday and Friday the hours will be from 9 am 7 pm and on Saturday from 9 am until noon. On Saturday it will be a $2 bag day. Offering an example of Christ by feeding the hungry. The pantry is in need of cereal, jelly, pancake mix, syrup, macaroni and cheese, frosting, cake mix, crackers, spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, and 4-roll package of toilet paper. Food Pantry items can be dropped off at the Parish Office during business hours or on the weekend in the gathering space. Thank you in advance for your generosity. With your help, we offer those in need an example of Christ by feeding the hungry. Blanket Collection for the Homeless During the month of September, we will be collecting new twin and full sized blankets for the homeless. These blankets will benefit those in need at Safe Horizons in Port Huron. If you are able to purchase a blanket for those less fortunate, it will be greatly appreciated. There will be a container located in the back of the church for your donation. This is a way we can give back for the many blessings we have. Thank you in advance. Marlene Brown, Holy Family Christian Service Chair Mercy in Action Day of Service Saturday, October 1, 2016 In this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan is joining with parishes across the Archdiocese of Detroit to plan, organize and implement a Mercy in Action Day of Service on October 1, On this day of Mercy we can show the community what charitable and caring parishes we are. During the month of September, St. Augustine and Holy Family will be collecting NEW stuffed animals (bears, cats, dogs, bunnies, etc.). On October 1 st we will be attaching a prayer card to the stuffed animal and then they will be donated to our local Fire and Police Departments as well as the local hospitals to give to children who have experienced a fire, abuse, been displaced, or who are ill. There will be containers located in the back of church to accept your donations or you may drop them off at the Parish Offices. We are all looking forward to a successful year of growing in mind, body, and spirit. Our 8th graders are continuing the tradition of creating a float for the Richmond Good Old Days Festival. With the help and support of parents, Fr. Joe and Ms. Silvestri, they decided to use the theme "Saints Among Us". They have spent numerous hours researching saints and working together to not only promote our amazing school, but to show the community how important their faith is to them and how our students strive to be like saints. I hope you are all able to come out and support them during the parade. Even more importantly let us all make this school year one in which we reflect, pray, and work to find the saints within us and to share it with the world! Mark your calendars for Friday, October 21 st when Maniaci s Banquet Center will be hosting St. Augustine School s annual dinner/ auction. This year our theme is A Prohibition Party! Join us for a trip back to the 1920 s with flappers, gangsters, and shhhhhhh, perhaps some libations! We are looking for donations of new items for our auction. If you would like to donate individual items or create a basket yourself, it would be greatly appreciated. (Please bring any donations to the school office no later than Friday October 7 th, and mark it auction along with your name and contact info.) We are also looking for corporate sponsors at different denominations to cover some of our costs and/or purchase some big ticket items for auction. Lastly, we are once again looking to include some vacation packages in our auction. If you, or someone you know, own a time share or a vacation house, we would love to auction off some trips. (If there is a small surcharge for cleaning or name changes, we might be able to cover that if necessary.) Please contact me with any questions.
