The natural tendency of people is to turn away from something that they perceive as difficult. We look for what we believe to be the easier way. The actual time we spend trying to find an easier way would more often be better spent actually doing the work, but I digress. Things seem like a good idea at the time and turn out to be a bigger headache in the end. In the readings today, God is telling us to do the right thing and that he never gives us permission to do the wrong thing, God reminds us that if we do what is right to begin with, we don't have to worry about it later. Just do the right thing - seems so simple, but we know that is not always the case. Last week we were told to eliminate malicious speech. I am not sure I could find one person that would disagree with those two points, its the making it happen in our hearts and lives that is tough and since it is tough, we just give up. If every person who ran into hardship would just give up where would we be? Still living in caves probably. Think of the Wright brothers. What would we be doing had they not been willing to stick to their beliefs even though it was hard? Look how computers have given us so much free time and made our lives so much better- OK, scrap that analogy, but you get my point. Continued on Page 3

3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 God knows that what he asks of us is hard, but there is a big difference between hard and impossible and God does not ask us to do the impossible and he gives us grace to do the difficult. I have learned that doing and accomplishing the difficult is far more rewarding then doing something that is easy. I am old enough to remember when the Rubik's cube first came out. It was difficult to solve, so they came up with a way of helping people solve the puzzle easily. They sold in a package a new set of colored stickers so that you could just put them over the present stickers and say you solved the puzzle - Boy wouldn't that make you feel good about yourself? As long as we keep in mind the difference between difficult and impossible we will do much better of overcoming the difficult and in the end, realize that God is only putting before us an opportunity to experience a greater sense of accomplishment. We can overcome our challenges in life if we believe in ourselves and believe in God. It is not like God is asking you to forecast the weather; He leaves that up to more qualified experts among his creation like groundhogs. Have a great week. Saint who? There is a special day coming up on the 14th of February and I am sure many of you are making plans to share in some way with a person you love on or around that day. I know how much work you put into it so that this day is celebrated in the manner in which it was always intended to be celebrated. I especially know how hard it is to find just the right card to express your feelings on the feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius! That is right, the 14th of February on the church calendar is the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius who were actually brothers and are responsible for bringing Christianity to most of what is now Eastern Europe. In fact the alphabet that is most used in that part of the world is called the Cyrillic Alphabet for St. Cyril. They are far more important saints than St. Valentine. What is known about St. Valentine is primarily legend more than fact. The idea of him being associated with love comes from the tradition that he would do secret weddings at a time when it was illegal to do so in defiance of Caesar. To what extent that really took place we are not sure and as a result when there was a reworking of the calendar and the list of feast days was revised, St. Valentine (like St. Christopher) was taken off in favor of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. This does not mean he is no longer a saint, just that he is removed from the liturgical celebrations of the year. So, go ahead and celebrate the day. If someone comes up to you and wishes you a happy Valentine's Day, don't freak them out and tell them Happy Cyril and Methodious Day to you! It is better to let it go, but you may want to remind them that by celebrating the feast of a saint they are really participating in a Catholic holiday. If they say it is not, then just ask them who Valentine was and see if they know. You would be surprised to find out how many people don't associate him with the catholic church and come to think of it, they also don't associate St. Patrick as catholic as they do with being Irish, and he was more catholic than Irish, as far as that goes. Help people to connect the dots of how catholic they really are even if it is the wrong saints day they are celebrating. Have fun with the holiday and show someone you love how much they mean to you everyday. Page 3 Have you seen new people at church in the past couple of weeks? One of the hardest things about joining anything new is getting to know new people. It does not take a special program or a specially trained group of ministers to welcome people. If you are sitting next to someone you do not know, take a minute and simply say, "Hello, my name is " I am glad to see you and worship God with you". This may go a long way in breaking the ice, making the person feel like they want to come back to church or just comfortable with their experience of our parish. It should not be hard to be nice and polite after all. Like today's readings, it is always good to do the right thing and there is never an excuse to be rude. Please bring in you old palms: If you have old palms laying around the house from last year or previous years, please bring them to church and we will burn them for ashes on Ash Wednesday. Just as a word of instruction, I am asked a lot what to do with old religious items that have fallen apart or are broken and you may or may not be sure if they are blessed. People feel bad throwing them away. If you are not sure if they have been blessed you may dispose of them in one of two ways. You may burn them to prevent them from being used in an inappropriate way, or if it will not burn, you can bury it. In regards to religious items you may get in the mail as part of a solicitation for funds, those items have not been blessed and can be thrown away, but if there are items you have or have received due to someone s death and you are not sure of their status, you can dispose of them in either of the two ways I described. Retreat!!!!! This does not mean to runaway in its spiritual sense, but it does mean to get away from the normal routine of life and take some time to draw closer to God. I know that we have a men's retreat coming up soon, but I would also like to see the women of the parish have their fair chance at a yearly retreat as well. There are opportunities for retreats in our area if someone would be open to working with me to organize such a weekend away. I know ladies like a "girls weekend" from time to time, but maybe one that centers around Jesus would be a nice change of pace as well. Please take the opportunity to grow in your faith. Please mark the dates: In last weeks update of the pre-lenten talks that Fr. Sean and I gave, I asked you to pray each day by reflecting on St. Paul's letter to the Philippians 4:4-9,12,13. We will be following up on our talks and moving forward on March 6 and 20. I hope to see you there for those nights of reflection and be comforted by the knowledge that you can do all things in Christ who strengthens you. ATTENTION MEN: HAVE YOU BEEN THINKING ABOUT GOD LATELY? Perhaps this is a special time of life for you. Renew your inner life at our parish weekend retreat for men March 17, March 19, The retreat theme this year is "Abide in Me: Choosing to Live Faithfully in an Era of Chaos." You'll be amazed how much the retreat will help you find God in your daily experience and what peace this awareness can bring you. Call in your reservation now to Andy Gillis at or the Retreat Center at You can also register online at stpaulretreat.org.

Again please give me a call with questions or if you are able to support the auction & raffle needs. Sue Ann, Festival Chair Mail Call Q. At our final pre-lenten session with Fr. Joe, you announced something about somebody is at my door in regards to religious solicitors like the Jehovah s Witnesses. Several of us did not catch it all. What is this all about? A. The sessions are called Knock at The Door. The first two sessions (February 13 & 20) we will be looking at two of the most common door to door missionaries that we might encounter at our front door (or a store s parking lot). They are the Jehovah s Witnesses and the Mormons. We will examine what they believe and why the Catholic Church rejects their doctrine. Once we have a basic understanding of their beliefs and what the Catholic Church teaches, we can conquer our fear of them and fulfill the command to: be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks for the hope that is within you, in gentleness and respect (1Peter 3:15). These people at your door are not evil, they have been deceived. They are at your door because they want to help you find the truth through their (false) god. Our faith must be first learned and then shared in kindness to all. (Philippians 4: 4-9). This study is important to Catholics. First of all, this is a good way to learn more about our own faith and thereby strengthen it. Secondly, the people at our door are (unknowingly) desperate to know the truth about Jesus and our Catholic faith. Instead of avoiding them we can share the real Jesus with these people. These are people the Holy Spirit has brought to our door. The Holy Spirit can use our voice to plant seeds in their hearts, or perhaps water the seeds planted by others. Sacred scripture instructs us to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). A sizable percentage of people in these groups are former Catholics. These are our fellow baptized brothers and sisters who were not equipped to recognize the slick well-packaged deceits presented to them. Had they had the armor you have the opportunity of donning, they would have never even considered leaving the Catholic Church. March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Thank you to all of those who have attended one or more of the FAMILY MOVIE NIGHTS!! For those of you who would like to join us this coming month, meet in the gathering space around 6:30 p.m. After a light dinner, everyone will make their way into the gym, to watch the movie on a very large screen. Bring your bagged camping chairs or make a comfortable pallet on the floor. Plenty of fresh-popped, movie-style popcorn will be available for the movie watchers. During the intermission, the children will be invited to do a special project.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The flu is often confused with common cold, but flu symptoms are usually more severe than the typical sneezing and stuffiness of a cold. Signs and Symptoms of Flu: Fever, Chills, Cough, Sore throat, Runny or stuffy nose, Muscle or body aches, Headaches, Fatigue (very tired). Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, although this is more common in children than adults. Prevention: The most effective way to prevent the disease is vaccination in the fall, before the season starts. The vaccine helps protect people from the flu viruses that experts think will be most common in the upcoming flu season. If someone who's been vaccinated still gets the flu they will have fewer and milder symptoms. Washing your hands regularly with warm soapy water will kill flu germs.

10 St. Augustine School Page 10 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Greetings from Preschool! It is hard to believe that we are already into the month of February! The preschoolers have been very busy with events in school and field trips this year. We have journeyed to Blake s Cider Mill in the fall, and visited Striker s Entertainment Center for Bowling with Dads. We enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast in November and Muffins with Mom in December. Not to mention the everyday activities at Preschool that keep things humming along! I teach one of the two four year old classes. Mrs. Blissett teaches our three year old class and the other four year old class. She is assisted by the sweet Mrs. Julie Newman and the lovely Mrs. Malburg helps in my classroom. It is always busy around preschool; busy kids are happy kids and that is the way we prefer it. It is always interesting to hear what our little ones are thinking, so I asked my class what they liked best about preschool. I am delighted that most of the children responded with playing at school with friends is what they liked best. Play is so essential in these early years for so many reasons. I have always appreciated the support of our school staff and parents with our hands on approach to early childhood education. Ellie: Playing with friends. Making crafts. Kortney: Playing with all my friends, making crafts, and sitting down and reading stories. Eddie: Playing and having snack to eat. Gabe: That I get to play with Jake. Playing Fireman Sam. I like to nap too. Aiden: The gross motor room. Isla: I get to spend time with my friends. I get time to spend with my teachers. Gavin: I liked the Teddy Bear Picnic. I like playing Legos. Playing with my friends. Luke: I like coming to preschool to play with my friends. I like to eat lunch. Patrick: Playing with blocks, Legos, and playing with my friends.
