1 September 3, 2017 The Parishes of Page 1 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, 2017 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia This weekend we celebrate Labor Day and though people will often look at it as the "end of summer", it really has a very important significance. We should take the opportunity to consider the nature of work. In our ever growing secular society, the greatest victim to our modern thinking is a lack of appreciation of history. We are obsessed with the present and the future with no real appreciation of the past. One major battle cry continues to be the separation of church and state. This too is a victim of the lack of appreciation of the past. On this Labor Day as unions march down streets of major towns and political parties try to make "points" with constituents, they will most assuredly fail to recall the impact Pope Leo XIII in 1891 had on the labor movement. At the height of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo wrote a document called Rerum Novarum, which spoke about the importance of the dignity of work elevating the person. He spoke about proper working conditions, against child labor, in support of labor unions and even on behalf of appeal boards. Many of the things that the labor movement holds as foundational points of their existence were given real weight by Pope Leo XIII. At that time, the Holy Father took a courageous step in saying what he did since he was bucking the trend of the world which saw the lust for wealth as being the most important thing, even at the expense of people (somethings never change). Safety of workers was not considered and the Holy Father spoke about working conditions and proper pay for corresponding as fundamental to justice. Pope Leo also spoke about how work should add to the dignity of the person. Too often, even to this very day, people work simply to make money; they do not feel fulfilled personally and they do not like their job, but "it pays the bills." Such an approach to work belittles the person, adds to stress and sucks the joy out of life. No amount of money can replace the sense of accomplishment that is achieved when doing something that you feel called to and are passionate about. Filled with purpose a person is capable of great things and will labor with great joy; the person who only lives for the paycheck sees their reward in the money and seeks to escape from the situation as often and as soon as possible. "I can't wait for the weekend or to retire" is not the statement of someone who finds fulfillment in their labor or is feeling they are appreciated by the person that is their employer. Proper pay is important to make sure that people are not taken advantage of, especially in the church. Too often, people who work for the church are expected to make significantly less then people who work in the public sector. This should not be the case. I have tried in this year s budget to raise the level of compensation for all our employees as is right and just. The work they do is important, and as a parish community we should recognize that our financial support of their efforts is important and necessary. Pope St. John Paul II wrote affirming the teachings of Pope Leo XIII a document called Centesimus Annos in 1991 and invited the world at that time to reexamine what his predecessor had written. It is too easy to fall into the traps of considering our own personal wealth over the dignity of others. It is too easy to take advantage of people, not respect the environment, diminish the dignity of others in our quest for money. For example, as major construction and restoration efforts are being made in Detroit and many people are working, little consideration is given to low income housing and providing proper and safe places to live for people who already live there and are stuck in low income work. This highlights the problem these documents speak about. When we cater to one portion of the population, we often do so at the expense of another and often it is the poor who suffer for the sake of the rich. As we celebrate labor, we need to make sure that we are not taking advantage of people, that we show our appreciation for the work of others, whether they are paid or not. We need to thank the many stay at home moms for example. We need to appreciate the efforts of others in our families, our co-workers, the construction workers on the road who are making our traffic jams bitter now, but better later and so on. Anyone who works in an office knows the importance of the support staff, office managers and maintenance personnel. Often we look at a building and we think about the person who works on the top floor, but what about all the people that work from the basement on up? What about farmers, artists, teachers and other professions that get overlooked because society weighs importance based upon ability to earn income? Let us not diminish the sacrifice of parents who work hard all day and come home to do homework and various activities with their children, especially the single parents. Today, we should take a moment to appreciate the efforts of every person great and small. The words, 'thank you,' often go unspoken, but on a day like today that should not be the case. So, to all of you who work, who feed us and our families, to those of you who do your best to provide for others, to those who work and volunteer at the parish, to all of you who do something each day no matter how insignificant you may think it is - thank you and may the Lord reward you for your labors. God bless you all. A personal request to all our grade school children: As a new school year starts, I hope you make every effort to give your best at school each day. I want you to work hard, play nicely and be kind to every person. I do not want to hear about you being mean to other kids, not sharing and calling people names. I do not want to hear about cheating and not doing homework. I want to hear reports about how well you are doing, how you are helping other kids who may be having difficulty learning or Continued on Page 3

3 September 3, 2017 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 how you invited the kid who sits alone at lunch to come and sit with you and your other friends. This is a new school year and that gives you a chance at a new beginning, to start anew at becoming the person Jesus wants you to be. Remember to start everyday with a prayer rather than yelling at people to get out of your way because you need to get ready or because someone is late. Ask your Guardian Angel to keep you from harm and to help you to be good and at the end of the day, make sure you give thanks to God for all you have been given. Finally, make sure you get to Faith Formation class every week, mass every Sunday and for those here at our school, that you take your religion class seriously every day. It is very important to grow not just in information at school, but in Wisdom of God. Nothing should be more important than God in your life and everything else should fit into our learning and worship of God. Deal? Now, make everyday a great day Geniuses! God bless. We will be starting up Youth Group Meetings again on September 17th All high school age children (9th - 12 grade) are invited to attend the first youth group meeting of the year. I will be there to talk with you about my vision of youth ministry, various activities and new opportunities for you to grow in your faith and also to have fun. It would be great to have a good turnout of young people so that we can get your input as well. Please consider coming to mass at 5:30 and then head over to the meeting following mass. If you attend a different mass time, come to the Holy Family Life Center around 6:30 pm and join in the fun. Looking forward to seeing all of you there. OK - no more excuses. Now that summer is over, I expect people to come to mass again on a weekly basis. I know that people go on vacation during the summer months and that mass attendance drops during those months, but now that school is back in session, people should be around more and mass attendance should pick up. This is especially important for those who have young children. I can't stress enough how important daily prayer and weekly Sunday mass is to every family. You teach a terrible lesson to your children when you don't go to mass, because you are teaching them that God is not really important in life. I know that is not what you want, but it is the consequence of the action. Something can't be important if we don't make it a priority. So when making your family calendar, please put mass and faith formation on the top of the list and not an "if we can" notation. Thank you for your cooperation. Bible Study Dates People have been asking about the Bible Study I spoke about last spring. I will be leading the Bible Study on Monday nights at 7:00 pm in the Life Center at Holy Family. They will last about an hour and a half, start with a brief prayer, a question and answer period, and then delve into the books of the Bible. If you wish to attend, you will need to bring a Bible with you. We have some here in case you do not have one that you feel comfortable bringing. I would ask that you do not bring a King James or Vulgate version of the Bible. If you have a New American or a New Jerusalem text, those are fine. You will learn about why there are various versions of the Bible and lots of what the Page 3 passages contain. All are welcome. These sessions are designed for adults and young adults. Though children are welcome, much of the material may be over their heads. I look forward to opening the pages of the Bible with you. See you soon. Upcoming Dates: September 18, October 2, 26 and 30, November 13, 27 and December 11. After Christmas we start up again on January 8, 22, February 5, 19, March 5 and 19, April 9, 23 and May 7 and 21. Looking for students to play for St. Augustine school teams If you are a registered member of a parish that does not have sports teams and you are attending a faith formation program in our area, you are eligible to play for St. Augustine School. If you are a home school family, you can also join our teams. My hope is to have more opportunities for our children to participate in sports, but we can't do that unless we have more children willing to play. Next year, there is consideration for joining the Catholic Youth Organization leagues which will open up more opportunities for the children in our parish, including playing football and playing in championship games at Ford Field, for example. These opportunities can't happen though if we do not have the number of children to field teams. So please consider signing up to play for our St. Augustine teams. Thank you Finally: Just a reminder that there is daily mass each day at one of the parish churches. If you are home during the morning, we have an 8:00 am mass Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and an evening mass at 7:00 pm on Tuesday night. We also hear confessions before mass on Tuesday night and after mass on Wednesday morning. Though these do not replace Sunday, it can only help to take advantage of a mid-week mass and receive the Eucharist. Thank you for your consideration. Have a great week. Raffle Drawing for Tickets for the Mass of Beatification for Fr. Solanus Casey. November 18, :00pm Ford Field Detroit 50 names from each parish will be drawn for 2 tickets per name. Q. My daughter s new boyfriend says all religions are true and worship the same, one true God. He says Christians, Muslims, Mormons, Buddhists, etc. are merely explaining the same faith in different ways. Do you have any advice for my daughter? She reads mail call. A. The claim that all religions worship the same God and, therefore, all are true faiths is foolishness. Christianity and Islam cannot both be true at the same time. Mormonism and Buddhism can t be true simultaneously. Hinduism and Christian Science cannot both be true. Although we may indeed find some elements of truth in most religions, all religions cannot be true at the same time, because they teach so many things completely opposite one another. They all may be wrong, this is true, but certainly they all cannot be right. When teachings contradict each other, somebody must be in error; there is no way around this fact. Leaving common sense out of one s ability to reason will indeed affect perception, but it cannot affect reality. Only Christianity recognizes Jesus Christ as the eternal God who became human and died for the sins of humanity. Only Christianity teaches Jesus rose from the grave. Christianity alone clearly teaches the redemption and salvation of human kind can only be found in, and through, Jesus Christ. If it is true that Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, savior of the world, then no faith outside of Christianity can be true. The way to come to a practical understanding of the one, true God is through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In addition to that, only the Catholic Church offers the opportunity for Christians to live a sacramental life through the Church Jesus established. It is in His Church we find the fullness of truth. The Catholic Church, because of the promise of protection of Jesus, remains the one, true Church which contains the Full Deposit of Faith. St. Benedict, the founder of Western Monasticism, is the person who wrote a series of rules for his monks. It is called the Rule of St. Benedict. In the rule, he taught that the monks under his care were to pray and work. Hence the phrase "Ora et labora" (pray and work). Today we celebrate Labor Day. The history of Labor Day is very interesting. It arose in the early nineteenth century as the labor movement was beginning to flourish in the US. It was established as a day to encourage the union movement and collective bargaining. With our heightened political awareness of labor unions today, it would be good to encourage the foundation of Labor Day: the dignity of the laborer and the dignity of work itself. O God, to whom all our prayers rise like incense, we thank you for the ability to work and to provide for our families. Assist us in honoring the laborer and providing a fare wage for all laborers. To work brings us purpose and dignity. In work, the laborer honors you, the One who provides everything we need. We ask you to bless all those who have no opportunity to work. Enliven our hearts to hear their cries for meaningful work and help us to give from our abundance to those who have little. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
