3 September 27, 2015 Page 3 The Convocation and the New Evangelization Last week we were in Northern Michigan for the priest convocation, a gathering of all the priests in the Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD) to hear the Bishop s vision for the new evangelization. If you are wondering what is the new evangelization then you are in good company. Many priests at the convocation were wondering the same thing. The new evangelization was born out of what you might call the post- Christendom culture where the relevance of faith in God and the practice of religion had lost its importance. You might even say that where once Church and culture were friends they are now in many ways enemies. Where evangelization once reached out to the unbaptized the new evangelization now focuses its attention on those who are baptized but have wandered from the faith or left it behind altogether. We are a church that has been sacramentalized but not catechized, in other words we have been baptized but that s as far as it goes. The new evangelization is directed towards those who traditionally have Christian backgrounds of minimalism (when the faith shrinks in the face of culture), or who no longer practice the Christian faith at all. It seeks to awaken again in believers a full relationship with Jesus Christ which is the basis for any authentic evangelization. All the popes since John XXIII have been asking us to get back to the mission of the Church, which is to Go and make disciples of all nations to evangelize the world. But first we need to get our house in order and to re-evangelize ourselves. It begins with each Catholic accepting, by a personal decision, the saving sovereignty of Jesus Christ and becoming his disciple. Only out of that relationship can we continue the mission of the Church. I will be speaking more of the new evangelization and the plans of the AOD in the following weeks. Until then let s continue to pray for the Pope s intentions for his visit to the USA. Myth Busters Beginning in October we will start up the Myth Buster campaign again which ran so successfully last year. As part of our stewardship with the Archdiocese of Detroit (AOD) every parish helps to sustain the training programs that form and educate men and women who minister in the Church. Last week you saw the commissioning of more than 90 catechists and teachers who received certification through the AOD. Myth Busters helps sustain the seminary which trains our future priests and deacons, music ministers, principals, DRE s and youth ministers. We also contribute to the School Outreach Fund which gives aid to Catholic schools like St. Augustine. Programs like chaplaincies to hospitals and other Christian services which you and I rarely think of until we need them are sustained by the stewardship of parishes participating with the AOD. This year we have our own seminarian, Louis Hackstock, studying at Sacred Heart Major Seminary which is funded by your generosity. He deserves our support and so I encourage you to give generously to Myth Busters. Last year we reached 87% of our target for Myth Busters which was phenomenal. This year I would like to see us surpass our goal, and for good reason. Any monies that we receive above and beyond our goal come back to the parish 100%. Myth Busters will launch the first weekend of October. The yellow Myth Buster envelopes are already in your packet and have instructions to help make a pledge. Thank you again, and please give generously. God bless your week, Fr. Joe ATTENTION YOUTH BASKETBALL PLAYERS ALL 6 TH, 7 TH, AND 8 TH GRADE BOYS OF ST. AUGUSTINE, HOLY FAMILY & ST. PETER S CHURCH. Can a Catholic burn sage in their home to keep away evil? A. My question to you would be; why would a Catholic, or anyone else for that matter, want to do something that is not only ineffective, but actually counterproductive? Participating in any kind of occult practice is an open invitation to evil, not a deterrent of or escape from evil. The Catholic Church has condemned all New Age and occult practices by saying: All participation in witchcraft, magic, horoscopes, clairvoyance, fortune telling, Ouija boards, divination or sorcery, even for the sake of restoring health, are gravely contrary to the virtue of the Gospel of the Lord. These other things contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God and to God alone. See The Catechism of the Catholic Church; for a more detailed explanation. The very best way also happens to be the only way to keep evil at bay: by turning to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is best accomplished by living a sacramental life. A baptized Catholic who faithfully receives Holy Communion, goes to confession regularly, maintains a consistent prayer life and has a personal relationship with Jesus will have no need or desire for anything from Satan s grab bag of death. Please send your questions to: George@CatholicIssues.org 44th Annual Harvest Dinner Sunday, October 11, :30 p.m. in the activity center for more information call The dinner: Roast Beef and Chicken with all the trimmings. 10 Page 10 September 27, 2015 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook For the past seven years, St. Augustine School has been a Green School. This means that the school has been implementing small changes that are helping us to be eco-friendly. Some changes over the past few years include recycle bins in each classroom, containers for just plastics, and now we even have a bin in the parking lot for the community to also use for papers. The lunch program is slowly working its way to a waste-free lunch program. This means waste of recyclable materials is nonexistent. Simple changes were to stop using plastic cutlery and use metal instead; and use plastic plates instead of paper. And new for this school year is the start of our bird sanctuary outside the school library. Teachers also teach lessons about the environment, go on field trips, and even bring in presenters to speak on environmental concerns and ways they are being addressed. Despite these simple steps and this ongoing effort to continue making changes, many are not aware that we are even recognized as a Green School or have had questions. Many questions come up regarding recycling. Why are some items not recycled? Who takes the recycling? Can I drop off my home recyclables? First, many items that people believe that can be recycled may not be. Metal cans made of steel, tin, and aluminum can be recycled as long as they are cleaned out. Most plastics can be recycled; but it depends on your provider. Always check the numbers on the bottom of the container. If there is no number, more than likely, it cannot be recycled. Most paper can also be recycled, but generally not construction paper. (Fortunately the bin in the parking lot takes all paper!) Cardboard also can be recycled if it is clean and free of food waste. Boxes need to be flattened. Paper cardboard (example: juice containers) must be cleaned out and flattened. Glass can also be recycled. Some providers will not do colored glass. What cannot be recycled is anything with food waste. This answers the question we have heard regarding why pizza boxes are not recycled. If any item to be recycled has food contamination it cannot be recycled as it will impact the integrity of the other materials being recycled. Plastic bags, polystyrene foam, hangers, and any hazardous waste are not accepted for recycling. But most grocery stores recycle plastic bags, shipping store (UPS, for example), will take packing peanuts, and some cleaners will take old hangers! Also, the County Health Department will accept expired or unneeded drugs in tablet or capsule form. Currently teachers and staff empty their own recycle containers. Many often take it home and put out for curbside pick-up. If you currently have no curbside pickup we ask that those in the community use the large Auction 2015! Friday, October 16, 2015 to benefit St. Augustine Catholic School Dear Parish Members: It s Auction Season! Meet Me at the Fair is our theme for this year s auction and there are lots of new and exciting things happening! First, we have COMPLETELY REDONE CHECKOUT! We have hired the Auctioneer s company to run check-out and he assures me that everyone can be checked out within 30 minutes!!! Second, Maniaci s will be offering frozen beverages from the bar this year to add to our Fair fun! Lastly, we will be having a photo booth complete with lots of props for your amusement that night along with popcorn, a duck pond raffle, a balloon pop and so much more. Tickets are on sale now in the school office for $35 each and include a sit-down dinner, a full open bar, 50/50, wheel barrel of cheer and over 200 terrific items to bid on. Buy yours early as when you pay for your tickets, you will choose your seat in the hall. Since donations make up the bulk of our offerings, we are in need of any NEW items that you could provide. Please drop them off at school labeled Auction and please include your name and contact information by September 30th. We are also in need of sponsors for some of our auction expenses. Please contact me if your company would be willing to cover some of our costs. Sponsorships usually range between $200-$400 (although any sponsorship would be welcome). We are also selling advertising in our program for your business [$25 for business card, $50 for half page and $100 for full page (8x10)]. Thank you for your continued support of our event! See you at the Fair! Jen Thomson Auction Chair jthomson1315@gmail.com recycle bin in the parking lot for their paper, and drop off electronics* at the school. Both of these also raise funds for the school. We encourage you to start recycling at home by sorting papers and dropping them off in the bin. It s a small start, especially for those who do not have the convenience of curbside recycling pick-up. (*Please contact the school for information on what electronics are accepted.)
