5 November 22, 2015 Evangelization St. Augustine & Holy Family s Operation Olive Branch Luke 10: 1-2 Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. You are one of the laborers called by God for this harvest. Jesus has given us all an assignment; it is to present the Gospel to the world. Operation Olive Branch is one of St Augustine / Holy Family s tools for this assignment for our corner of the globe. We assemble the third Saturday of every month at 8:00 in the morning for Mass. After Mass we gather for refreshments and a time of reflection and preparation. We are then given a blessing by Fr. Joe or Fr. Sean and sent out two by two. Others remain in the church to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for those sent out and for the people whom they will meet Saturday: December 19 - Holy Family Looking for a new way to let your spouse know you love them in the midst of your jobs, carpooling the kids, and trying to keep up with your house and yard? Tell him or her they're still #1 in your life. Share a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend with each other. The next weekend is December 4-6 at the Holiday Inn in Troy. For more information, visit the website or contact Pat and Kelly Duda at Priestly Vocations 2016 Saturday: January 16 - St Augustine February 20 - Holy Family March 19 - St Augustine April 16 - Holy Family May 21 - St Augustine June 18 - Holy Family Please continue to pray for priestly vocations. In doing so, please also lift up Louis Hackstock, our seminarian. MAIL CALL Page 5 Q. How should I respond to a Protestant friend, who says Jesus gave power to forgive sins to all Christians when He gave us the Lord s Prayer and asks: why do Catholics say it has been given only to priests? A. Christ was talking to the apostles when He instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation. See: John 20: There were only a small number of Jesus many followers present. They were in an enclosed room, not in a public place (20:19). It is clear that our Lord did not intend for all of His followers to receive the authority to absolve sin, but only the core group - the apostles. Many Protestants overlook the fact Jesus also gave them the authority to retain sins. Does your friend claim that authority? Confirmation for the fact that the clergy can absolve sin is found in James 5: Here we find the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters [priests] of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil... and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." In this Sacrament we see forgiveness of sin tied directly to actions of a priest. We Christians have indeed been given the directive to forgive those who sin against us, but we were not given the direction, or authority, to forgive the sins of another person, nor are we given the authority to forgive sins committed against another person. Jesus taught us to pray forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Also see the Catechism of the Catholic Church Please send your questions to: George@CatholicIssues.org

Any St. Augustine Parishioner who purchased a TRANSISTOR HEARING UNIT! This is for those who have been challenged with their Transistor Hearing Unit, which they would have purchased from St. Augustine Parish. After much trial and mostly error we have come to the conclusion the actual transmitter unit that you have purchased is working and doing its job. HOWEVER, the earphone is NOT lasting very long for several of you. If you have not already purchased an earphone for your Hearing Unit, please contact me to obtain a new earphone. I have found hearing units that have a much stronger wire and should last much longer. Please let me know if you have further questions or to pick up your new earphone. As usual you can contact me at either my cell phone or address listed below. Thank you for your patience with this process. We want to thank all of those who have helped over the years. Due to life circumstances, the number of members has declined and we are seeking some new members. The only level of skill is the desire to help others. We create prayer scrappy quilts, afghans, prayer shawls and slippers for those that are struggling with physical and emotional challenges. We have resumed meeting at Holy Family, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. It is not mandatory to come each time we meet, however it offers a time for supplies to be picked up, to learn new techniques, and to meet the ladies that are also working on the prayer blanket ministry. 10 Page 10 November 22, 2015 Donations Requested St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook When I talk about our faith and Jesus with my preschool class it is wonderful to see that they are all so excited to hear the Bible stories and ask all sorts of questions. We are all born with that little seed of faith in us and as parents, teachers, and the church community, we are responsible to help nurture and provide children with the tools to help it blossom into a great love and understanding that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I was curious to know what my students knew about Jesus and his life and what they would like to tell Jesus. I wanted to share their responses. I am excited that I get to be a part of their faith journey and to see their knowledge and love grow more and more throughout the year! Peter: He died on the Cross. Jesus keeps me safe. Eli: Jesus isn t bad. He protects us. I want Jesus and God to be safe. Mason: Jesus died and came back to life. I would like to tell Jesus I love Him. Riley: They put a big rock right next to Jesus. Then He rose. I love Jesus. Alaina: Jesus was up on the Cross. He s up in Heaven. Jesus, I hope you re always safe. Aiden: They put him up on the Cross because someone was mean to Jesus. Samuel: He died, and they brought him to a cave. Jesus went to Heaven. Giselle: Joseph and Mary saw the stone was moved and Jesus rose up from the dead. I love Jesus and hopes he feels better. Zoe: He died on the Cross. Jesus protects my mom and dad at night. God planted a seed of faith in our hearts, all we have to do is water it with prayers, fertilize it with words of God, and cultivate it with lots of love. Included in this number is $4350 for science lab furniture through our Fund It Campaign and $150 towards the Climate Control campaign (for insulated curtains, window tinting and classroom air conditioners.) We have left the Fund It campaign open until November 30 th and have already received another $100 towards it (reflected in the numbers above). We hope that if you were not able to attend the event, or would now like to donate towards our new lab furniture, that you will drop your check in the collection basket, at the parish office, or the school office labeled auction and we will put your funds toward the science lab improvements. We would be happy to provide a tax receipt to you as well. We hope that those of you who attended enjoyed a fantastic evening of good food, fun and fellowship and if you were not able to come, we hope that you can join us next year. Thank you again and God bless, Jennifer Thomson, Auction Chair Visit Aquinas College Aquinas College in Grand Rapids is hosting two AQDays for all high school juniors and seniors interested in visiting their beautiful 117-acre campus.
