1 The Parishes of Page 1 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia On Wednesday the Christian world will be celebrating Ash Wednesday and the readings today give us some insight into how we are to approach Lent. The truth is that most people have turned Ash Wednesday and Lent in general into a punchline to a joke, a game to be manipulated and another example of how we strive to do little as to gain much from God. For example, we are told in the readings for today not to worry about earthly things and to trust in God; and in the readings for Ash Wednesday we are reminded to turn away from sin and turn to the Lord, so what do we do? We give up candy or beer except on Sunday's because that is not part of Lent. How does that help us in turning away from sin and trusting in the Lord? The Gospel tells us not to worry about what we are to eat or drink, yet those are things we often "give up" at Lent rather than giving up gossip, or lying, or treating others with contempt, or being sarcastic. Rend you hearts not your garments, the Bible tells us, and that means to tear away from our lives those things which offend God. We must seek to better our souls not our waist lines. After so many years of giving up things that we returned to as soon as Lent was over, why do we not seek to give up that which we do not want as part of our lives. By failing to address the sinful tendencies of our lives, we openly profess that we want them to be a part of our lives by not striving to overcome them. I would rather give up the Internet for 40 days, but hold on to my tendency to be filled with hate towards people who are different than myself for example. What does that say about my attachment to sin? To some, the giving up of something we use so often may seem like a big "sacrifice," but a sacrifice is a gift given to God in praise of God. What do you think the Lord wants more, the giving up of a technology for 40 days, or the removal of bigotry from our lives? Even our approach to Ash Wednesday makes a profound statement. Every year, there is a picture of some minister standing outside so that people can get "drive thru ashes". There is no time for prayer and reflection, just drive up, get the ashes and then on with my day after a stop at Tim Horton's for my coffee and the great sacrifice of not getting a donut, if I remember that I am supposed to fast that day. The ashes are a reminder to us of the fact that the things of this world are dust and have no lasting value. They point us to hold on to that which is of God, for God alone is eternal. The ashes in and of themselves hold no value, yet people hold on to them as if they are the most important part of the day. Every year that I have been a priest, I have had people ask me if they could get ashes on Thursday because they were too busy to come to mass on Ash Wednesday. Do you see how we have turned Lent into a game or a punchline to a joke? We should be taking this time seriously. It should be a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is our chance to stop and reflect on our lives and make real changes in how we are living, if in fact we are serious about being real disciples of Christ. If we don't go to mass each week, we should make it a time when we start anew in making it a priority. If we fail to pray each day, then Lent becomes the time of creating a pattern of prayer in our daily lives. If we have a limited view of sharing of our resources, then we use this time to expand our ability to help others. If we struggle with various sins, we use this time to make every effort to fight against the temptations which have turned us from God. Lent is a time to reclaim our true direction in life from the detours that have taken us from the path of what is good and holy. May our Lenten journey lead us closer to God and away from the earthly pursuits which so dominate our lives. God bless you all. Ash Wednesday Masses: Though Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, it is a very good way to start the Lenten season in prayer, receiving the Eucharist and getting our minds and hearts set in the proper frame for a good Lenten journey. To that extent, we are offering a variety of mass times at both parishes to help you attend mass. Starting with a 6:30 a.m. Mass at St. Augustine, an 8:00 a.m. Mass at both parishes and then three evening masses at 4:00, 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Please look at the back of the Lenten letter that was sent to all registered households recently. If you did not get a letter, you may want to stop by the office and register. Fasting and Abstaining: Every year I get asked about the "rules" regarding fasting and abstinence. My general reply is that if you are able to fast and abstain you should. Fasting means that you can have one full meal and the other two should not equal a full meal and of course no eating in between, only required two times a year by the way. Abstinence means not eating meat. If you can physically do either or both, you should and if it is a physical difficulty, then you should avoid it. Do what you can and you may want to do it even more than required if it will help you to keep in mind that your final goal is to turn away from sin by fasting and abstaining from sin. May God be praised in our thoughts, words and actions. Continued on Page 3

3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Fish Fry's start of Ash Wednesday: Just a reminder that Holy Family will have a Fish Fry this Wednesday and that there will be a Fish Fry every Friday night on a rotating basis at St. Augustine and Holy Family. The parish that hosts the Fish Fry will also host the Stations of the Cross that Friday night. St. Augustine will host a Fish Fry on Good Friday this year as well. Please support our local parishes and join us for prayer after you eat. Thank you in advance. School Open House: All families are invited to attend the Open House at St. Augustine School. If you have been thinking that you would like to send your child(ren) to a Catholic School, this might be your chance to take a look at what we have to offer you beyond the basics. This is especially true if you have been using money as the excuse for not sending your student(s) here. I would also encourage you to invite people you know who have mentioned that they are not happy at their school or are looking for a school for next year to also come to the Open House. With only a little bit of group effort we can get our school really growing again. I am hoping to increase our enrollment by 20 students for next year! I believe God has given us a great gift and challenge to educate minds and hearts through our school and we need to use it the best we can. Students do not need to join our parish for the "parish rate." As long as they are Page 3 registered and active in a Catholic Church, they will be granted the discount. We are also continuing to offer the introductory discount for first year families and multi-student discounts as well. I encourage all families to take advantage of the Stewards for Tomorrow Grant from the Archdiocese of Detroit; and the parish, through our scholarship money, will match the amount that you are awarded! This is the best time to take advantage of the benefits of a St. Augustine School education. See you at the Open House. Master Plan Update: I am happy to announce that the Master Plan Committee of both parishes have agreed to contract with Integrated Design Solutions LLC to work with us in developing a master plan for our individual parishes. IDS will guide the community at Holy Family in regards to looking at the integrity of the present church and the deficiencies that exist. They will also give us some idea as to the possibility of a new church building and its possible costs. At St. Augustine, the group will also look at the structural integrity of our buildings, needed updates and repairs and the construction of new facilities to address some of the deficiencies of our present set up. All meetings are open to the members of the parishes. Thank you to the committees for their hard work and we look forward to working with the staff at IDS. Have a great week. Lent / Easter Bible Challenge Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ! (St. Jerome) During the seasons of Lent and Easter, we are challenging all parishioners at St. Augustine and Holy Family to grow deeper in their knowledge of God s Word, the Bible. Beginning Ash Wednesday, we will be reading the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Together these two books tell the story of Jesus ministry and the earliest days of Christianity. A reading plan is provided in brochures available in the Church and in the offices. This plan breaks down these books into short segments that should not require more than minutes a day to read. You may read from any Bible you feel comfortable with. If you do not have a Bible, please come into the office and we will give you one. Please accept this challenge and join with us in reading Luke and Acts together.

Everyone involved helped make it enjoyable for the celebrating couples and their families. St. Augustine Parish Council Corner The Church Council meeting of February 8 covered a host of topics including a brief discussion of appropriate dress for readers, ushers, EMHCs, sacristans, and even parishioners. The general consensus was that there were not many problems but that all of us should be dressing in respectable clothing while attending the Lord s Supper. Doug Duncan, representing Dynamic Catholic, made a short report on Allen Hunt s upcoming presentation as well as proposing a new Allen Hunt book for consideration by Council for distribution to parishioners. Gerard Szczerbinski followed up on his prior proposal for a more visible electronic sign for the front of the Church. Fr. Joe suggested several alternatives to the original quite costly proposal, and Gerard will follow up with the sign company. There were also suggestions by Council members of volunteer help to reduce the cost. The consensus of Council was that we should pursue this subject once we receive further information from the sign companies. The majority of the meeting focused on the plans for future development of parish facilities, including the school and other buildings, many of which are in dire need of repairs. For example, we discussed the lack of handicap accessibility to the Parish Hall as well as plumbing problems in it and also the need for new windows in the school. Fr. Joe reported on his contacts with IDS and other companies for bids regarding preliminary studies of these and other concerns. IDS proposed a preliminary bid of $45,240 to be split between both parishes for a study regarding the needs of both; another company proposed an expenditure of $28,800 for St. A s alone, and Ames bid approximately $60,000 for a much more complex and thorough study. We will need to undertake such a study and then engage an architect for conceptual drawings before any contractor could provide cost figures for whatever plans are finally agreed to. At this point, obviously, everything is preliminary but the forward momentum is encouraging. The Council will regularly report our discussions in this space so that parishioners are aware of what we are doing and can make suggestions to us. Just a quick summary of some other discussions: 1. Fr. Joe also mentioned that Festival planning is going very well. There is hope to present Dueling Pianos on Friday night for a three hour performance as well as a DJ. 2. There will be a school open house on March 16 from 6-8pm. The school is doing quite well this year with tuition covering about 52% of costs, which meets the budget projections. 3. A proposed parish Welcome Booklet for new parishioners, created by George Moomaw, was presented to Council, which found it to be an excellent idea and determined we should go ahead with the project. Finally, Fr. Joe reported that all of St. A s debts are paid off except for the CSA fund. This is a marked improvement over what was a rather dire financial condition just a few years ago. In Christ, Tom Obee, St. Augustine Parish Council Member
