1 The Parishes of Page 1 The Ascension of the Lord MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus into heaven. Yes, this used to be a holy day of obligation and celebrated on a Thursday, but since people did not go to church for the feast, the bishops of the US moved it permanently to Sunday. The reason is that the feast holds some very important aspects of our faith. We hear about how baptism is to be done in the name of the Holy Trinity, we hear about how we are called to be witnesses and we get a chance to celebrate the work of salvation. When Christ rose from the dead and then ascended into heaven, the total work of Jesus was now done and it becomes our job to spread the Good News. For the Apostles and for us this should be an "Oh My" moment. The realization that this is now in our hands should make us all fall on our knees and pray to the Holy Spirit for the grace we need so that we do not mess it up. With Jesus returning to his rightful place at the right hand of the Father, he is entrusting us with the important mission of making sure that the Kingdom of God is proclaimed and alive in our midst. This is no easy task, but we have the Holy Spirit to make sure we don't get in our own way and fall flat on our proverbial faces. The words of the Scriptures should fill us with a sense of joy at the same time they terrify us. Jesus tells us what to do, promises that he is going to be with us until the end of time and then leaves. I kind of think of the first time I was asked to babysit some children by a family I knew. I thought this is going to be fine; I can do this and I even felt some level of assurance as the parents gave me my final instructions. Then they left! I was alone in the house with children and I was not much more than a child myself. As I saw the car leaving the driveway, there was a profound desire to run outside, throw myself on the hood of the car all the while yelling, "do you know what you are doing by leaving me in charge with your children?". I am sure that is why Jesus ascended into heaven because he could not be caught by the Apostles. Do you know what you are doing leaving this mission in our hands? Look at those guys after all; come to think of it, look at us. Really Lord, are you sure we are the best you can do? The answer is no, it s not the best, but it is what he has chosen. So, the time has come to stop looking around and realize the only way it s going to get done is if we do it. In small ways or large, the only way it s going to get done is if we are willing to stop looking up at heaven and ask the Holy Spirit for the gifts that can only come from him to do the work entrusted to us. So brothers and sisters, buckle up because it may be a bumpy ride from time to time, but Jesus believes in you. He believes in you to do the work of building the Kingdom of God here and now. It is in your hands and once you get over that, we can get to work. God bless and have a great week. Saturday Night High School Dance at Holy Family Just a reminder that next Saturday night, May 19th, there is a dance for all 9th-12th graders at Holy Family. We are still in need of some chaperones, but more importantly, we want all our high school age students to attend, even if you do not dance. It is important that people get to know each other and those relationships beyond our immediate group of friends only helps us grow and be open to new experiences later in life. We need to get out of our little bubble of life and meet some new people. When I was in high school, I rarely spoke until I was encouraged to try something new, and though I hated it at first, I am so glad I did it. I am sure it will be the same way for you. Give it a try and come to the dance. See you there. Next Week is Pentecost Sunday Next Saturday, Deacon Mark Livingston will be ordained a priest. Please pray for him and the others who will be ordained at the cathedral for service here in the Archdiocese of Detroit. At the same time, please pray for vocations. Thank you. Following his ordination, Fr. Mark will be having a mass of Thanksgiving at St. Augustine on May 26th at 6:00pm and then the following week, June 2nd at 4:30pm, at Holy Family. Please join Fr. Mark in giving thanks to God for his vocation and for his time in our community and your role in his formation. Please wear RED at all masses next weekend. Also, if you want holy water in your home, I encourage you to bring an appropriate container with you to mass and you can take the water from the font at church that was blessed at the Easter Vigil. It is clean water that has been filtered all along and there are no chemicals in the water either. After Pentecost, the water will be drained, so please take some of the water if you wish to have holy water in your home. Continued on Page 3

3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Upcoming Events that need your attention: May 26th at 4:30 pm: The closing liturgy at St. Phillip in Columbus with a dinner reception at Holy Family immediately following. It is important that you RSVP to assure an accurate count of those attending the mass and the dinner. Thank you. June 3rd 7:30 am: The walk with Jesus begins on the Feast of Corpus Christi. The mass before the procession begins at 6:30 am at St. Augustine and it concludes with the 10:30 am mass at Holy Family. There is a light lunch after mass. All are welcome to join in the procession for all or only a portion of the walk. There is a shuttle bus from Holy Family to St. Augustine beginning at 6 am. The bus will be part of the procession if you are unable to walk. We need help carrying the Eucharist and other roles throughout the procession. Please see the sign up sheet in church near the entrance. We are also in need of a coordinator or two for next year so that we can keep this important tradition going. Thank you. Holy Family Parish Celebration: The weekend of June 16 and 17. Please keep up with the details. We are in need of bakers for the bake sale, donations for the gift baskets, volunteers to help work the various areas of the celebration and of course for everyone to return the raffle tickets. We also need people to come to the event. On Saturday night we have wonderful entertainment and a great dinner of beef and chicken; a change from previous years. Tickets are $25 if you want to come for dinner. There is no cover charge to come to hear the band which starts between 8 and 8:30 pm. Please invite people you know to come and join us. On Sunday, Page 3 10:30am mass will be outside under the tent, followed by a BBQ hamburger and hot dog lunch for a free will donation. We will also have games, bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo for the kids to enjoy. Both days we will have the silent auction and on Sunday we will be giving away a huge variety of kids raffles for free; the only thing is that you have to be present to win. Hope to see you all there to enjoy the fun and please return the raffle tickets as soon as possible. Thank you. CSA By now, you should have received your CSA letter and pledge card. I simply want to thank everyone who pledged last year, as the campaign was a great success. As the letter said, we are only asking those who gave last year to make the same commitment level again this year, but you are always welcome to increase your gift if you wish, and we are encouraging those who did not pledge to help the parish by making a pledge this year. Remember, the money given to CSA is tax deductible. Also the amount we receive over our target goal is not taxed by the diocese, and unlike the Christmas collection which increases our CSA total each year, the overage is not factored into the equation. Simply stated, giving to the CSA helps the parish as we have seen in this past year. Thank you for your support of our parish. God bless you all and pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we lead into Pentecost next weekend. Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites An Invitation to Join Us! If you ask any first grade student they ll tell you that the Holy Spirit instilled Love into each and every one of our hearts. We are a loving being and this is the way we are directed each day, to show love towards others, to God and to ourselves. When we come across situations that we discuss as a group in our class, the way we can consider handling them is by showing Love. In our class we ve discussed God s Greatest Commandment: LOVE the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your mind. His second commandment is also LOVE related: Love your neighbor as yourself. The first grade students have written what they feel about love: Carson: God fills us up with Love. Love reminds me of my mom. Love is Jesus. Love is the mass. Sam: Love is happy because it was made by God and I love Mom and Dad! Natalie: Love is happy because God made it. Sarah: Love is patience. Love is Mom. Love is Dad. Love is hugs. Love is kisses. Love is caring. Love is for hearts. Finley: Love is LOVE. Jack: Love is happiness because God made it! Riley: Love is cuddling.
