1 September 20, 2015 The Parishes of Page 1 S e p t e m b e r 2 0, WITH THANKS FOR THEIR SERVICE IN CHRIST This week our parish is taking up a special collection for our priest s retirement. The With Thanks for Their Service in Christ collection will support the Priest s Pension Plan, which provides a monthly pension as well as health and automobile insurance to priests over the age of 70. As you know, the retirement years can be difficult for our senior priests. No longer supported by their parish communities, they rely on minimal Social Security benefits and their pension from the Priests Pension Plan for basic needs, such as food, housing, and transportation. Please show your gratitude to those priests who have cared for and ministered to our community by prayerfully reflecting on how you can best help support our priests retirement with a gift to the With thanks for Their Service in Christ collection. When you have completed your special collection envelope, either return it during the collection or drop it off at the parish office. FEAST OF ST. Please note that the Sacrament are for those who are seriously ill, those facing surgery and for the elderly. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament & Benediction: 9 pm MAIL CALL Q. What does the Catholic Church teach about organ donations? A. There are two types of organ donations to consider. The first is where a donation is taken from a living person. The second is an organ donation that takes place after the death of the donor. The first type includes donations such as a kidney or bone marrow. Donations that are given after death typically involve an organ necessary for sustaining life. These would include donations such as a heart, lung or liver. However, cornea transplants are also postmortem donations. Since the time of Pope Pius XII, the Church has explicitly stated that both types of transplants are licit, but only when certain requirements are met. Remembering that the end does not justify the means, two of these requirements are: the necessity of informed consent legitimately given by the donor and, that the physical and psychological risks incurred by the donor must be proportionate to the good sought for the recipient. The donor must be aware of these risks and the proportionate good. Pope John Paul II summed up the position of the Church in these words: "The Gospel of life is to be celebrated above all in daily living, which should be filled with self-giving love for others. Over and above such outstanding moments, there is an everyday heroism, made up of gestures of sharing, big or small, which build up an authentic culture of life. A particularly praiseworthy example of such gestures is the donation of organs, performed in an ethically acceptable manner, with a view to offering a chance of health and even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope" (Evangelium Vitae, no. 86). The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: Organ transplants are not morally acceptable if the donor or those who legitimately speak for him or her have not given their informed consent. It is morally inadmissible to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being in order to delay the death of the other person. (CCC. 2296). For example, both eyes are necessary for certain visual functions. A living person would seriously impair his or her ability to see if an eye were donated to another. Such a sacrifice would detract from the wholeness or full functioning of the donor's body. It would be a bad means to a good end, and therefore morally wrong. 10 Page 10 September 20, 2015 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Thoughts of Summer As summer winds down, we are gearing up for another great year in the Middle School. Transitioning back into the routine of the school day, the students reminisced about summer memories of being at the beach. Here are some of their thoughts about how their experiences at the beach remind them of God: In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. Genesis 1:1 Shells on the beach are plentiful and beautiful. God made us all different and special. He took the time to make every shell unique, just like us. God s love for us is like a never-ending stream of water. Even in the darkest depths of the ocean, there is life. God is present, even in our trials. Breezes on the beach are like God s forgiveness. Just like the wind can blow away a storm, God s love can wipe our sins away. If we are the waves, God is the sand. When we crash against Him, he calms and lifts us up, sending us back out to do His will. A sand dune is always in motion. God is always moving with us through our lives. His divine presence is strong and steady and gives us a strong foundation under our feet. And who is a rock, except our God? 2 Samuel 22:32 God is our rock. He is always there. Nothing shines brighter Than the light of a lighthouse Except for the love God has shared. God s love is like a light In the dark. He guides us to safety Through His word. God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. John 1:5 Inspired by their summer vacation and faith, these words of wisdom can be a refreshing reminder for us all as we move into a new season and a new school year. Janet Savoyard Middle School Teacher Looking for Lunch Duty person(s). Most days have availability to fit around your schedule. Can t wait to hear from you Marianne L. Jennings/ Principal Please call Or info@mysaints.net Auction 2015! Friday, October 16, 2015 to benefit St. Augustine Catholic School Dear Parish Members: It s Auction Season! Inserted in your bulletin is the flyer for this year s event. Meet Me at the Fair is our theme and there are lots of new and exciting things happening! First, we have COMPLETELY REDONE CHECKOUT! We have hired the Auctioneer s company to run check-out and he assures me that everyone can be checked out within 30 minutes!!! Second, Maniaci s will be offering frozen beverages from the bar this year to add to our Fair fun! Lastly, we will be having a photo booth complete with lots of props for your amusement that night along with popcorn, a duck pond raffle, a balloon pop and so much more. Tickets are on sale now in the school office for $35 each and include a sit-down dinner, a full open bar, 50/50, wheel barrel of cheer and over 200 terrific items to bid on. Buy yours early as when you pay for your tickets, you will choose your seat in the hall. Since donations make up the bulk of our offerings, we are in need of any NEW items that you could provide. Please contact me if your company would be willing to cover some of our costs. Sponsorships usually range between $200-$400 (although any sponsorship would be welcome). We are also selling advertising in our program for your business [$25 for business card, $50 for half page and $100 for full page (8x10)]. Thank you for your continued support of our event!
