1 All Saints Sunday November 4, 2018

2 Preparing for worship I am reminded of your sincere faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. 2 Timothy 1:5 Our Granny Haney lived in a small brick home around the corner from our house, situated at the end of a dead-end street in Alpharetta, Ga. There was no need to walk all the way up Manning Drive and then turn left at the Gunters house on Pine Tree Circle to get to her house. We just cut across the garden that adjoined the backyards of our home and hers. On Saturdays, my brother or I cut her grass. It was not a hard job because the yard was small and she paid us a few dollars. But the real reward was yet to come: a glass of her sweet tea and spending time with her. She sat in her rocking chair in the corner of the den, and we sat at an old table. Often she laid her Bible on the kitchen countertop beside her rocker, setting it aside to give us her best attention. We knew our grandmother loved God and loved us. We told her about our lives and the childish things that children do. Her high-pitched chirping laugh was a sign of her delight in us. In high school and college, and later when Lori and I moved to Fort Worth for seminary, the visits became less frequent but no less special. When it was time to leave, there was always a tender hug and a blessing that I came to relish: I pray for you every day. Granny died in 1999 at the age of 82. She had lived a full life. Our family gave thanks for this saintly life well lived, and we grieved. Laurie Taylor often says, The deeper the love, the deeper the grief. There was an empty seat at the table and an empty place in our hearts. At that time I was minister of music at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. One day I was having coffee with a choir member, Nancy, who also was the grandmother to a member of our youth choir. Nancy asked about the funeral and how I was. I said, I miss her very much and I m realizing that one of things that saddens me is I knew she prayed for me every day and now that is no longer so. Nancy looked up from her coffee and said, How do you know she no longer prays for you? I sat in silence, wondering at the wisdom of my friend and remembering that love is strong as death. Today is All Saints Sunday. In worship today we read the names of the Wilshire saints who have gone to be with the Lord this past year and we hear the mournful tolling of the chime. In spite of the shadow of grief, we also remember with thanks the saints, our parents and grandparents in the faith, who have loved us and taught us to love God and God s world. 3 November 4, :30 and 11:00 a.m. All Saints Sunday Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Abide With Me arr. Powell Litany on Psalm 34:1 8 Rick Hibbs / Gloria Martin I will bless the Lord at all times; the Lord s praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and the Lord answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Look to the Lord and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and the Lord delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in the Lord. +Hymn 567 For All the Saints sine nomine Greeting to Worshipers Mark Wingfield Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today. 4 In Memoriam Jessica Capps and Doug Haney We remember today those within the fellowship of the church who have died in the past year. With the reading of each name, a bell will toll. See listing of names on page 8. Prayers of the People Epistle Reading Romans 5:6 10 Jakob Topper Ann Meripolski / Kevin Summers For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Celebration of the Lord s Supper Darren DeMent All followers of Christ are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper, whether you are a Wilshire member or not. The bread used this morning is gluten-free. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Passing of the Bread Meditation on Rhosymedre (Lovely) Passing of the Cup Nimrod from Enigma Variations R.V. Williams Elgar +The Passing of the Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. +Hymn 459 Come, Share the Lord divernon 4

It is a community where refugees and others find hope and restoration and experience Christian love, where they hear the Christian message without pressure to convert. Choral Offertory Lord of the Small Forrest Sanctuary Choir Praise to the Lord of the small, broken things, Who sees the poor sparrow that cannot take wing. Who loves the lame child, and the wretch in the street, Who comforts their sorrows and washes their feet. Praise to the Lord of the faint and afraid, Who girds them with courage and lends them his aid; He pours out his Spirit on vessels so weak That the timid can serve and the silent can speak. Praise to the Lord of the frail and the ill, who heals their afflictions, Or carries them til they leave this tired frame and to paradise fly, To never be sick and never to die. Praise him, O praise him, all ye who yet live, Who ve been given so much and can so little give, Our frail, lisping praise God will never despise: He sees his dear children through mercy-filled eyes. Johanna Anderson +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. Old Testament Reading Isaiah 43:1 3a David McCoy /Jon-Erik Schoellhorn But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk 5

6 through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
