2 Preparing for worship The home where I grew up was full of faith, love and laughter. It began with my parents, who committed themselves to God and one another, then allowed their abundance of love to overflow into me and my sisters. They took us to church, where the generosity of a cloud of witnesses nurtured and shaped our lives. The generosity of Sunday School teachers, choir directors, pastors, my parents friends in the 2x2 Sunday School class, youth volunteers and peers modeled for me the joys and struggles of living the Christian life. We celebrated baptisms, rejoiced in confirmations. We cried at memorial services and shared deep grief and pain when tragedies befell families in the church. It was all lived out in front of me how to love large, how to allow God s abundance to flow through my life, sustain me in times of heartbreak and dance with me in times of exaltation. The generosity of these faithful people not just in giving of their money, but of their time, their talents and even of their struggles allowed me to grow in the faith that God s abundance is in the hearts of God s people. When the surgeon came out and told our family there was nothing they could do to remove the cancer from my father s body, we were devastated. Dad was one of the most loving, faithful and generous people you could ever know, and I m not just saying that because he was my dad. In the last moments of his life he gave me what may be a most precious gift faith and laughter. See Jesus were his last words to my mom in the early dawn, as my sisters and I were dozing near his bedside. As we gathered closer, laying hands on him, he took his last, very LOUD breath, startling us all into laughter, and I knew in my core he gave us a gift faith and laughter. It s who he was. At the house, following his service, a friend of my parents summed up my dad s spirit of generosity. He said, You never left a conversation with your dad without feeling better about yourself. My dad had spent his life sharing God s abundance, overflowing to others. Thanks to the great cloud of witnesses of faith, I knew how to grieve the loss of my dad and how to celebrate the life he had lived. Generosity is a mindset, a worldview, a heart perspective out of which one lives their life. As you prepare for worship today, I invite you to reflect on those who have been generous to you. Reflect on ways you can let go of fear and share. Be generous not only in sharing the joyful times, but in sharing the struggles, the heart-wrenching moments. Perhaps in those moments, another will be allowed to offer generosity. Seek this service to be filled with the abundance of God s Spirit so that your heart is transformed to know God s abundance. 3 November 11, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Down to the River to Pray arr. McGinty Wilshire Winds Shana Gaines, director Opening Sentences on Psalm 37 Shannon Nadalini / Jennifer Wagner Do not fret because of the wicked; do not be envious of wrongdoers, for they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will live in the land and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord, and the Lord will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in the Lord, and the Lord will act. The Lord will make your vindication shine like the light and the justice of your cause like the noonday. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently. +Hymn 570 Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus trust in jesus Bill Jernberg, piano Greeting to Worshipers Jakob Topper Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. You also are invited to take the red fabric rose from the card and place it on your lapel or blouse to help others identify that you are our honored guest today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Epistle Reading Acts 2:42 47 Kile Brown / Christie Michie They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

4 Conversation on Community Prayers of the People Mark Wingfield Heather Mustain / Julie Girards +Hymn 271 Christian People, Sing Together jubilee Giving of Tithes and Offerings When you give to Wilshire s Unified Budget, you create community among diverse people through Sunday School classes, choirs, programs for all ages, fellowships and missions projects, just to name a few. Your gifts make it possible for everyone to participate in the Wilshire community of faith regardless of income or status. Offertory Sanctus arr. Curnow Wilshire Winds +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 15:7 11 Kevin Cabaniss / Britt McClung If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be. Be careful that you do not entertain a mean thought, thinking, The seventh year, the year of remission, is near, and therefore view your needy neighbor with hostility and give nothing; your neighbor might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt. Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem *Prayer of the Children arr. Klouse Shekinah Can you hear the prayer of the children on bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room? Empty eyes with no more tears to cry turning heavenward toward the light. Cryin, Jesus, help me to see the mornin light of one more day, but if I should die before I wake, I pray my soul to take. 4

5 Can you feel the hearts of the children aching for home, for something of their very own. Reaching hands with nothing to hold on to but hope for a better day, a better day. Cryin, Jesus help me to feel the love again in my own land, but if unknown roads lead away from home, give me loving arms, away from harm. Can you hear the voice of the children softly pleading for silence in their shattered world? Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate, blood of the innocent on their hands. Cryin, Jesus help me to feel the sun again upon my face. For when darkness clears, I know you re near, bringing peace again. Dali čŭje te sve dječje molitve? Can you hear the prayer of the children? Kurt Bestor **My Hope is Built Sanctuary Choir arr. Trenney My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ, my righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found; Dressed in his righteousness, alone, faultless to stand before the throne. On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. Message The Power of a Generous Community Meredith Stone Third in a series on Generosity +Hymn 272 They ll Know We Are Christians st. brendan s Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude Trumpet Tune on jubilee arr. Brummel The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of our choirs, who lift our spirits with song every week.
