1 Christ Episcopal Church Chronicle for April 2017 Corner of Ridgecrest Drive and Franklin Turnpike, P.O. Box 10355, Danville, VA Church Phone: (434) April 9th Palm Sunday 10am April 13th Seder Supper 6pm April 13th Maundy Thursday Service 7pm April 13th-14th The Gethsemane Watch: Maundy Thursday Vigil 8pm-Midnight 8am-Noon April 14th Good Friday Stations of the Cross 7pm Apri 16th Easter Service 10am Reception Following Easter Egg Hunt March has been a full month of Lenten reflection. We have journeyed with Jesus in the desert and tried to understand how to resist temptation as Jesus did. We have realized through selfreflection and self-discipline our relationship with Christ and where we need to go. As we begin April the hardest part of the Lenten season faces us, as we realize we are not worthy of God s unconditional love. But, before we can rejoice on Easter we must continue with Jesus through the highs and lows of Holy Week. It s a busy time at Christ Church, with many opportunities to worship and experience Holy Week with each other. It starts on Palm Sunday where we will praise Jesus with a Procession of the Palms. On Thursday we celebrate a Seder Meal and then go into the sanctuary to hear about the new covenant established with the breaking of bread and the drinking of wine. Jesus also issues us a new commandment, Love one another. Just as I have loved you. At the end of the service the altar is stripped and we leave in silence allowing members to start the The Gethsemane Watch: Maundy Thursday Vigil. We return on Good Friday for the Stations of the Cross to hear the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. On Saturday we wait. Unlike the Disciples huddled in the upper room, we know what is coming on Easter Morning. The Empty Tomb. I encourage everyone to try and attend as many events during Holy Week as they are able. Especially try and join us for the celebration at the 10am Easter service, with a reception and egg hunt following. If you don t drive after dark and would like to attend an evening service please give me a call so we can arrange a ride for you. With the Grace of God, John Ross Upcoming Events Vestry Meeting Wednesday, April 5th - 6pm Youth Group Wednesday, April 19th - 5:30pm ECW Meeting Sunday, April 23rd following church

2 Coin Folders Please return on April 16th, Easter Sunday. Please don t feel that you have to fill a folder with quarters; use bills or a check if it is more convenient for you. We would also ask that you avoid taping individual quarters. It makes them very sticky, which makes our bank very unhappy. This year we are sponsoring God s Pit Crew. Spreading Hope across the nation and at home God's Pit Crew is a local non-profit, faith based crisis response team of over 300 volunteers who wish to serve others in their time of need. They send teams of volunteers with supplies to help support and rebuild in areas that have been damaged by fire and natural disasters. MISSION: With God's help and direction to bring hope, healing and restoration to hurting people in times of crisis. April 13th 6pm Christ Church will be holding a Seder Meal prior to the Maundy Thursday service. There is no cost for the meal, but because of the complexity of the meal preparation, we ask that you register on the sign-up sheet at church, or Sherry Gott - sherrygott@gamewood.net In the Christian tradition, the Passover Seder is when Jesus instituted the Eucharist. Gathered around the supper table with his disciples, Jesus told them, I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. - Luke 22:15-16 KJV The ECW met on Sunday, March 19th. Plans were made for a blood drive and a spaghetti supper. Kathy Haney spoke about the blood drive, and what we needed to do to make it happen. We need to have at least 10 people signed up. It was decided to wait until mid September to have the blood drive. We will be putting out a sign up sheet during the summer. The spaghetti supper will also be sometime in the fall. Sherry Gott spoke on the Seder Supper. The set up for the Seder Supper will be Wednesday, April 12th at 4:00pm. This set up is a little more work than usual, so please join us, "Many hands make light work." For Easter it was decided to have finger foods. Please bring your favorite finger food to share! In keeping with trying to plan three months ahead, we discussed Mother's Day, May 14th and Father's Day, June 18th. We will have finger foods for those two Sundays. We also talked about Youth Sunday in May. Barbara Clark will coordinate the food for that Sunday. Watch for a sign up sheet. I want to thank all the "ECW Ladies and Men", who helped make the pancake supper a great fundraising event for the church! Our next meeting will be April 23rd. FYI... The Diocesan ECW is now accepting applications for the Elise Holladay Scholarship and the Beverley D. Tucker Scholarship. Applicants must be communicants of the Diocese of Southern Virginia and have at least a "B" or 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students must be enrolled full time for the coming year. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2017 in order to be considered for the Fall semester. A student may receive funds twice. For more information and an application, Contact Sandra Garner, Peace, Lu

And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. - Luke 22:45-66 NIV We are collecting candy for this years Easter Egg Hunt that will follow the 10am Easter service. If you can help, please bring in bags of wrapped candy by Sunday, April 9th. The church has plenty of plastic eggs but, we will need help filling them after church on Palm Sunday. Any donations would be helpful. Thank you! We a r e c u r r e n t l y collecting donations in any amount for Easter Lilies. Forms are located on the credenza at church, and on the last page of this newsletter, to fill out in memory of, or in thanksgiving for, someone. These flowers help to make the church look beautiful at Easter. Please return the forms by April 9th to ensure they are included in the Easter bulletin. 4 The Youth Group met for i t s r e g u l a r m o n t h l y meeting on Wednesday, March 15th. The youth lead the group in Evening Prayer followed by a Spaghetti Supper. During dinner, they watched another part of the Iseado series on Love. Afterwards, we discussed the story of Zaccheaus the tax collector and how to love our enemies and how hard that can be. Then the children were charged with the task of putting on a skit trying to remember as much of the Holy Week and Easter stories that they could. They did pretty well as a whole, but were a little rusty in parts. As we read these stories from the Bible the kids made Holy Week bracelets to symbolize the events of the week. The next youth group meeting is set for Wednesday, April 19th from 5:30-7:30. As always we thank you for your support and ask for your prayers for the youth of the church. - John & Kristi Ross Sunday School has been studying the Bible and how to use it. We have been looking into the Bible as a sword of truth and how to take it into the battles of our everyday lives. Sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives we forget to ask God for help or seek His help when we have a problem. We have been discussing ways to teach others about the Bible. The children have been doing a great job of working on the Books of the Bible and which are New Testament and those that are Old Testament. They have also spent time talking about how the Bible was written. The children will be doing some Lenten study on Holy Week the next few weeks and then moving on to plan and prepare for Youth Sunday on May 21st. Please continue to pray for our Sunday School program. - Kristi Ross Scout Sunday was celebrated on Sunday, March 12th at Christ Church. Current and former Boy and Girl Scouts were celebrated. Thank you to John Fifield and Bob Chenery for posting and retiring the colors. The service began with a recitation of the Boy Scout Oath and the Girl Scout Promise. Coffee hour consisted of some scout favorite snacks and it was fun to check out everyone's badges, patches and pins. Thank you to all who made this a success.

5 A big THANK YOU!! to everyone that participated in the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper This year we raised $780 for the church and it was one of, if not the largest crowds, we have ever had. Between setting up, decorating, cooking the apples, casseroles & pancakes, serving the food, collecting money at the door, cleaning off & resetting tables, running food back and forth from the kitchen, donating food, supplies & advertising, preselling tickets or just getting the word out to the community, it truly was a whole Church Family effort. Thank You. EASTER FLOWERS Flowers given in memory of someone or in thanksgiving for someone: Given By: Phone PLEASE PLACE YOUR FINANCIAL GIFT IN AN ENVELOPE WITH THIS FORM AND PUT IT IN T COLLECTION PLATE,OR MAIL IT TO: CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, P.O. BOX 10355, DANVILLE, VA Be sure you indicate if the flowers are in memory of or they are in thanksgiving for someone as this will be listed in the Easter bulletin. Thank you for your support
