1 The Sanctus Bell MARCH 2019 St. Bride s Episcopal Dear St. Bridians, Lent will begin about the time your read this article. I have to admit that there are a number of aspects of the Lenten Season that I love. I enjoy participation as a congregation in the devotionals of The and The Stations of the Cross. I love the hymns and anthems that we traditionally sing during Lent. The recitation of the Great Litany and the Decalogue are comforting to me, as I remember the Decalogue being recited regularly in my home church. And although some people, perhaps even some of you, Dind the time from Ash Wednesday until Easter depressing, I Dind it hopeful. It is, to me, hopeful because it reminds me that no matter how badly we as individuals and as a people have messed things up, we were worthy enough for God to send Christ to redeem us. We had enough merit that Jesus was not only able but willing to save us. I have to admit that I do Dind walking the way of Lent following a discipline giving up something for Lent or even adding a devotional very difdicult. I have been remarkably unsuccessful at giving up any thing at any time, but especially during Lent! Adding Bible readings or books about Spirituality makes me twitchy. I try to sit down and concentrate and the world is knocking at my door or in my mind, all the time. I have been most successful in using my Lenten Discipline to reinforce my New Year s resolutions, which fade away pretty rapidly. Then, in June I make Summer resolutions, in September, Fall resolutions then in Advent, resolves. I have tried over the period of several years to work on the same resolutions/discipline. I have been delusional enough to think that I have been making progress on making the disciplines into habits. Then, recently, I was cleaning a Dile drawer at home and found my resolutions from New Year s Out of the 10 items listed I have conquered 2. Two new (good) habits in 18 Years! Worse yet, the other 8 items are all on this year s list! Fortunately, our ability to handle devotionals is not how we will be judged at the end of time. It is much more important that we are active followers of Christ, not just fans. So my Discipline this Lent is to consider the important question of how does my being a follower of Christ inform my daily words and actions. I will write on my door, my bathroom mirror, my desk bulletin board and I will prayerfully consider daily What should I as a Christian do? Mary Lovell Sundays in March March 3 Last Epiphany Fr. 2 Dining Out aka Merry Monthly Meals or 3M Club As you can see, we have a new name for those that enjoy dining out. Thank you to Roy Corson for the catchy name. Since Lent is right around the corner, the 3M Club will not dine out again until Sunday May 19th. The restaurant will be announced at a later date. We would encourage all St. Bridians to participate in our Lenten meals and program. MEN S BREAKFAST The next Men s Breakfast gathering will be Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 AM SANDWICHES Our sandwich ministry will be making and delivering sandwiches, March 16th. Sandwiches are due Friday, March 15th. Please label the bread bags with the type of sandwich

3 Dear Friends, HORATIO S CORNER Today as I sit in the cozy quarters to write a note to you all for the Sanctus Bell, the rain is pouring down, the temperature is falling and wintertime is still with us. I am most thankful that I do not have to go outside to hunt for breakfast! Thanks to the faithful parishioners who bring coffee hour treats each Sunday and the other groups who also meet here and upon occasion also bring treats. I am thankful that my pantry is not bare! I am also very thankful that Lent is fast approaching and although I have not yet heard about the Lenten Program, I trust, as well as hope and pray, that we will have our usual Lenten Suppers and program. I also want to thank Fr. Gwinn for ministering to us these past weeks and let him know that I have found his sermons very interesting. I for one will certainly miss him and his family as they have returned to New Hampshire. I hope that they will be back with us again when they are again in the area. I am also listening in on choir practice on Thursday nights and also quietly praying the in the private spot, while the others do so in the church before choir practice. You re invited to come and take part as we begin to prepare for Lent. During the Sundays of Lent we shall be doing a study of the Stations of the Cross. (March 10, 17,24,31) Kirke

5 Vestry Announcement Kirke White, who has served as Senior Warden of the Vestry for two years, and who was recently elected as Junior Warden, announced at the Vestry meeting on February 20th, that he is unable to complete his term and submitted his resignation. Kirke has a number of family and personal reasons for making this decision. Please support and respect his decision. The Vestry has agreed to accept, with reluctance, his resignation. We know it was only reached after much prayerful consideration. Fortunately, Kirke will be continuing his work with Adult Formation as well as some of his other activities at St. Bride s. Please join the Vestry in thanking Kirke for his dedication as Senior Warden during the last two years as well as his visionary input to the work of the Vestry. New (to us) Priest The Reverend Peter will be with us for the first time on March 17th. was ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1982 and has served in several Dioceses. He will be with us on Lent II, III and IV.
