4 THE PRACTICE OF LENT Why Lent? Why do we enter into an exercise of self-denial? Why is it good to take stock of our lapses in piety? And, why is this season of restarting so beneficial? Lent is more profound than mere repentance. We are called to do more than punish and humble ourselves with sack-cloth and ashes. The goal of Lent is to prepare a pathway to uncovering our true natures and true yearnings, thereby reflecting on God s true nature. We judge ourselves by taking stock of what tendencies or habits may need to be stopped temporarily (perhaps permanently) in order to see a little clearer. In acknowledging that we have strayed and been distracted from our true heart s desire and from our true Love of Christ, we reset ourselves body, mind and spirit. Sacrifice and penance are ways we can begin to see that we have gotten bogged down with our own self-absorption, seeing life through our own self -seeking lens. However, when we fast and give up those things we think are dear to us, something happens within and clarity happens. This atonement is not our nature, but it is a gift from God. Through the act of humbling ourselves and stepping away from our needs for a time, the mind begins to clear. Through simplifying and decluttering, we are able to pay more attention to our deeper desires. Lent is not about God s retribution. It s about preparation and movement toward Him. We repent to see Him more clearly, and thereby seeing ourselves more clearly. We now can see that we are His and He is in us. When we do as He did, we feel that something is different about us, relearning to act as we were made to act. Our sacrifice is His sacrifice. Our temporary pain is an entering into the pains of the Cross, in some beautiful mysterious manner. The further we step away from our cluttered patterns, the better we are to see His patterns. We can then feel more profoundly how his patterns are the deep yearnings of our mind, our bodies and our souls. All of it is His gift. The clarity, the joining into His story of the cross, and the awareness that He is always with us are all gifts that Lent offers. May you experience your devotion and self-denial as the perfect preparation to His resurrection. May you come to understand that enjoining with Christ s death necessarily means you will soon enjoy His resurrection the purpose of Lent. Lenten Meditations Be on the lookout for a series of Lenten Meditations in your inbox. The meditations will be a short blurb from the book: We Preach Christ Crucified by Kenneth Leech. Lenten Wednesday Evening Bible Study Series Sitting in the Dark; Growing Through the Poetry of Pain. Lenten soups with a video series featuring Parker J. Palmer, Glennon Doyle Melton, Jean Vanier, Brené Brown, Walter Brueggemann, Barbara Brown Taylor and Nish Weiseth. Be encouraged that the difficulties in our lives often lead to transformation and healing and that, indeed, life comes from death. Series begins Wednesday, Feb. 17.
5 T-Shirts If there is enough interest from those of you that don t have one or would like a new one, we will order t-shirts to wear during Lent to promote our HCEC Lenten Fabulous Fish Fry Fridays. The cost will depend on the number ordered. We need a minimum total order of 24 shirts to keep the cost of the short sleeve shirts below $ We will also offer long sleeve shirts. The cost of the long sleeve with be approximately $ There is a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall or you can Ellen Eby at: elleneby@att.net. In order to have them for the first Friday we will need to have all orders by February 1. The United Thank Offering is a personal and family devotional program of The Episcopal Church. It is a practice in our life in Christ that begins with daily prayers and gifts of thanksgiving. The Hesse gifts -- coins and bills dropped in the UTO Blue Box are combined with Parish and Diocesan celebrations and finally with all of the Episcopal Church. The offerings are given away in the form of grants. These grants support the mission of the church throughout the world. Every penny of the offerings is given in grants each year The United Thank Offering gives an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to mission through daily prayers of thanks for all the good things that we have and can recognize in our lives. In giving thanks with a coin, not only do we offer a gift to someone else, but we also honor the blessing that we are remembering. Giving in small ways teaches us to give in larger ways as we grow. There are UTO Blue Boxes in the Narthex for every individual, including children, to collect their coins. Please take one and contribute your coins as well as you pray in thanksgiving for your blessings. Representing Holy Comforter On the weekend of February 12 and 13, Holy Comforter will be represented at Diocesan Council by Dianne & Walt Kilgus and Ellen Eby as voting delegates. Tom Long and Suzanne Smith will attend as alternate delegates (voting only if one of the aforementioned persons is not able to attend). THE UNITED THANK OFFERING PRAYER GRACIOUS GOD, source of all creation, all love, all true joy: accept, we pray these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all of life. Keep each of us ever thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenge that come our way. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through the outreach do the United Thank Offering. This we ask through Him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus Christ. Amen
6 2016 HCEC Lenten Fabulous Fish Fry Friday Update It is so hard to believe that Lent and our Fish Fry Fridays are a little over two weeks away with our first being on Friday, February 12. We are getting our plans together and have sign-up sheets up on a bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Although quite a few of you have signed up to help, there are still slots in most areas. If you are new to Holy Comforter, know that our Lenten Fabulous Fish Fry Fridays are a big deal to all of us at HC and to many in our community. Each week we work to put together some of the best fish plates in Angleton to help our parishioners and community observe Lent for the six Fridays during Lent. Many of our parishioners volunteer to furnish baked goods, and to help with set-up, prep, fry fish, serve and clean-up each week. The work starts with set-up and prep each Thursday evenings thru cleanup each Saturday morning. It is a great way to get to know fellow parishioners and serve HC. It can also be a wonderful Lenten discipline of sacrifice and giving of your time and gifts and talents. There is something for everyone, so I encourage you to sign up to serve or just to come out to enjoy the fellowship and see what it is all about. It is work but the blessings are abundant. Invite family and friends to join you. We also ask you to pray for the safety and success of this ministry. Thank you to those that have already committed to help. We look forward to seeing you all there. Installation of new DOK Linda Gana! Our Junior DOK girls retreating at Camp Allen!
