1 Church of the Good Shepherd September 2017 Volume 7, Issue 9 Shepherd s Tales Be United in the Same Mind and the Same Purpose As we at Good Shepherd enter a new school year and fall season, we live in a culture and country deeply divided. Recent events, along with the constant 24/7 news cycles, continue to bombard us with reminders of how deeply we are divided as a nation. Any good news, or glimmers of hope, are quickly suppressed by voices from many sides that would continue to divide us. There seems to be little interest in honest, reasonable debate of the issues. We talk past one another rather than person-to-person, as a way of reinforcing our own tightly-held narratives and talking points. Yet none of our divisions rise to the level of one issue which will soon begin in full force: the high and holy season of college football. While some parishioners are not as passionate as others, some derive a vicarious reason to continue living through the passion, loyalty, and memories that football can evoke. Yes, football will dominate our lives between now and the end of the year. Scheduled events will be planned to work around home and away games; some parishioners will disappear the Sunday morning following a hard loss; school colors will be proudly reflected in one s Sunday attire, especially if that person s team was victorious the day before. College football, and the rivalries that spring from it, are as much a part of our culture as saying. Bless your heart, to your neighbor whose team was crushed the day before. And while we remain this divided body, we are also reminded that there is no room for any worldly divisions (politics and football included) that might threaten our unity as the family of God in Christ. For as Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians, Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purpose. Part of this article is, of course, tongue and cheek. But may we never forget that our unity and love for one another must always supersede that which threatens to divide us. Embracing this truth will keep us one, and prevent us from losing sight of our common mission: proclaiming the Kingdom of God in the midst of a fractured and wounded world. Praise God! Fr. Bill +

2 Volume 7, Issue 9 Page 2 ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION A SIX-WEEK EXPLORATION INTO THE LANGUAGE OF OUR FAITH 10:00AM 10:45AM In the Conference Room In her book Graceful Nurture, Rebecca McClain writes, We are adept in talking about God, but we do not know the language of God. Many adults come to the church lacking even the most basic vocabulary of the Christian faith. Still others are victims of arrested spiritual development and insufficient skills to integrate their faith with their day-to-day life. Beginning September 11 th, Fr. Bill will lead an exploration into how the language of the Christian people can give meaning and context to the experiences and stories of our lives. A secondary intent is to explore how we as Anglican Christians understand and articulate this language within our own unique tradition. All persons are invited to attend. Participation is essential for persons wishing to be confirmed on October 22 nd during Bishop Duvall s visitation. A text for our study will be John Westerhoff s, A People Called Episcopalians: A Brief Introduction to Our Way of Life. The book is available in several formats through Amazon. Several copies will be available for purchase at the church. Please register this Sunday on the sign-up sheet in the parish hall, or call the church office. While registration is not required, it will assist me in planning. I look forward to being with you in this way on Sunday September 10 th. BISCUIT BREAKFAST BETWEEN The Biscuit Breakfast has been well received so far and we will continue it through the month of September to gauge its popularity. Instead of Coffee Hour after each service, it was thought that we could have a light Biscuit Breakfast between services (from 9:30 to 10:30) so we could have fellowship together for those attending the early and late services. The church provides biscuits, doughnuts and coffee. People will be asked only to bring a bowl of fruit or a container of juice to share (Janice Gilbert will contact you). New Service Hours On August 20th, our service times changed as follows: Said Holy Communion at 8:30am Christian Formation at 10:00am Choral Holy Communion at 11:00am

4 Volume 7, Issue 9 Page 4 TAIZÉ SERVICE September 5th There will be a Taizé service at 6pm followed by a light supper and a speaker. We will have a Taizé service the FIRST TUESDAY of each month to avoid conflicting with some other on-going community activities. ( September 5th, October 3rd, November 7th) A sign-up sheet will be available in the parish hall, so we can prepare enough food for everyone. JOIN THE CHOIR! The hymns, the chants, the anthems and cantatas are lessons and sermons in song. Massey H. Shepherd, Jr., 'The Worship of the Church' The only thing better than singing is more singing. -Ella Fitzgerald Singing is one of the great joys of life. We express our deepest wonders and bring our faith to life in song. Choir provides an outlet for creative expression, a way to be faithful and to encourage others in their own faith. Choir rehearsals resume Wednesday, September 6 at 7:30 in the choir room. For the month of September, we have open rehearsals, come sit in, sing along. You may find your voice.
