And maybe that s what these people are. They re adversaries. Whatever the right term, I don t think they re on my side.

I ve lived long enough that I don t tolerate adversarial people very well.

It just seems easier and more productive to make every effort to work in harmony. Unfortunately, that s not reality.

Somehow, I must learn to deal with these people and praying for them is what I know to do at this moment. I don t pray that they would change.

And even though I don t ask God to change them, I think He is changing me. I don t feel so angry toward these people. I feel more forgiving.

2 Page 2 Highland Park Baptist Church Mirror May 2012 Reflections in the Mirror by Sheila Allee Pray for Your Adversaries I ve started praying for my enemies. This is new both praying for them and having enemies to begin with. I ve never thought of myself as a person who has enemies adversaries, maybe but not enemies. And maybe that s what these people are. They re adversaries. Whatever the right term, I don t think they re on my side. They make life difficult for me and some of them seem to take delight in lecturing me and talking to me as if I were in grade school. I ve lived long enough that I don t tolerate adversarial people very well. I like to work with others rather than against them and it s hard for me to understand why anyone would want to do otherwise. It just seems easier and more productive to make every effort to work in harmony. Unfortunately, that s not reality. In the real world, we have conflict and we have adversaries/enemies. Somehow, I must learn to deal with these people and praying for them is what I know to do at this moment. I don t pray that they would change. In essence, I pray that they would have wisdom and help in all that they do. I pray that God would take care of them and hold them close. And even though I don t ask God to change them, I think He is changing me. I don t feel so angry toward these people. I feel more forgiving. But that s only part of the battle. We ll see if my prayers help me to be more tolerant and less reactive when I come face-to-face with these individuals. We ll see if I can let God do the same things for me that I ve asked Him to do for my adversaries hold me close and help me in all that I do. The Fruit of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control A group from the Missions Ministry worked at Hands on Housing last month with Austin Interfaith Ministries. Sisters in Service sponsored and served lunch to 120 students at UT s Baptist Student Ministry this month.

May 16 Immigration Our Justice Series features Jesus Romero of the ISAAC Project of Christian Life Commission with a presentation on justice and immigration. May 23 Earth Sarah Macias and Rabbi Steve Folberg of the Interfaith Environmental Network continue our Justice Series with love for our planet and its resources. May 30 Everyday Justice Author Julie Clawson will talk about her book, Everyday Justice, and the impact we have on our world with the choices we make.

Pastor Ruben said graduation is set for late June. The last stop was at Casa Bethesda, an orphanage for handicapped children.

Pastor Paulino likened the current drug war to the Old Testament scriptures with Israel s corrupt leadership and a country far from God.

4 Page 4 Highland Park Baptist Church Mirror May 2012 A Piedras Negras mission visit Fred Worley Fred and Barbara Worley went with Chuck and Nancy Kinzler to Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, across from Eagle Pass, Texas, over a recent weekend to visit three of the pastors they ve worked with. Padre Miguel Angel Cristerna, the pastor at El Buen Pastor, was at the first stop. He said the sewing clinic has benefited the women in so many ways. The sewing skills they learned got them jobs in the factories, and the self-esteem and self confidence they gained from working together made some of them supervisors. Women unable to work in the factories because of young children at home put signs on their houses and take in sewing. The computer center classes have given church youth computer skills for job applications. The cooking classes are developing entrepreneurial opportunities for the women and the church will furnish seed money for them to start businesses. The church shell in Colonia La Laja is already being used for services and meetings. Fred is drawing plans for the interior finish out, and Chuck will recruit workers to construct it in June. The Worleys and Kinzlers delivered VBS supplies, since El Buen Pastor will have VBS in six colonias this summer. The next stop was at Pastor Ruben Juarez s house, the pastor of Iglesia Bautista Gilgal, and the director of Benjamin Franklin School. We delivered books and teaching aids for the school. The HPBC budget and congregants provide monthly funds and scholarships for the school. Pastor Ruben said graduation is set for late June. The last stop was at Casa Bethesda, an orphanage for handicapped children. We took a grocery cart full of fresh vegetables, meat and produce. There 22 children there under Pastor Paulino Esquivel s care. Pastor Paulino likened the current drug war to the Old Testament scriptures with Israel s corrupt leadership and a country far from God. He said that only a return to God will restore Mexico. Let Chuck Kinsler or Fred Worley know if you want to help with construction or visits.. Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. Mark 16:15 Eagle Scout Project As his Eagle Scout project, Atticus Boyd of Troop 410 brought volunteers to install a wildlife habitat and meditation garden on the north side of the sanctuary. Buffalo grass is seeded, native plants are in, and pavers wind through the area. Thank you to Atticus, and scouts and leaders of Troop 410 for this beautiful area.

And if you do have a nametag, put it on every Sunday morning. It will help everyone. I m not kidding. Really. Let s wear our nametags and meet people we don t know. Share Your Table Our monthly food offering, called Share Your Table, goes to Baptist Community Center Missions this month. We ll collect through May 16 for this eastside, longstanding ministry that serves people all over Central Texas. In June we ll collect on June 3 for Micah 6. WMU Morning Our first Thursday 9:30 a.m. group of women WMU Morning will visit Harry Ransom Center at UT for their May meeting. May 3 a group will tour the center and see early King James Versions of the Bible. All are welcome, and Donna Reisenbigler has more details about the trip. Sisters in Service Our second Monday 7 p.m. group of women S.I.S. meets at Cheryl Kimble s house on May 14 for our last get-together before we take a summer break. Cheryl and Dee Dee Wilson will lead a jewelry-making class for us. All women of the church are invited to this time of fellowship and prayer and support for missions. Vacation Bible School Kids and leaders, time for a week of learning about God s grace, power and love.
