1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC August 26 & September 2, 2018 Back to School Jitters A new school year often emboldens a collective creativity as teachers and principals prepare to welcome and engage students to the rigor and joy of a new school year. At Holy Trinity School, teachers are back on campus reinvigorated from a wide range of summer experiences. Many have spent this time learning at conferences and retreats: The Ignatian Leadership for Mission retreat to guide us to live our Jesuit identity authentically; Teachers College at Columbia to hone writing instruction; The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning to study brain science and the future of education; The Science of Working Memory and Attention for the Classroom Teacher and Teaching and Learning for Diverse Minds to meet the needs of all learners; The National Diversity Practitioners Institute to develop cultural competencies; and Responsive Classroom to ensure that all students feel safe and valued.. Other teachers went on mission to serve the people of El Salvador, some helped renovate and paint our learning spaces, a few hiked with students through the Rocky Mountains, several tutored students to prevent a summer slide and many traveled around the world. As we enter our 200th Anniversary school year, our prayer (with open hearts and minds) is for the gift of God s grace to help us model for and lead our students to be agents of hope and healing for the world. Heading into this next century, we also welcome a new leader to the principalship, Kevin McShane. Kevin takes on the lead position after four years at HTS as Assistant Principal, 20 years as a math teacher at St. Alban s and a few early years at Mater Dei. So, what is a guy like Kevin, with two Ivy League degrees, Continued on page 5 A Prayer for Our Students Dear God, Thank you for the gift of education in every form. As our children prepare to start a new year, may confidence be their foundation, may grace be their guide and may hope be their compass toward a bright future. I pray they would have eyes to see the needs of those around them and a heart to love well. Pope Francis, Letter to the People of God, 20 August 2018 How does one make sense of it all? It is indeed a time whereby one s faith seeks understanding. Like many of you, I have asked myself serious questions concerning the institutional leadership of our Catholic Church. In addition to the anguish and the anger, I am now hearing an exhausted apprehension wondering what will next be disclosed. And asking: What besides the words will be the actions? Since June, when the first revelations of Cardinal McCarrick s abusive actions were revealed, and now since the release of the findings of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury, several members of the parish staff and myself have been meeting with many of you, individually and collectively. We continue to seek ways to provide occasions whereby parishioners may have opportunities to share, at times in cathartic encounters; allowing the emotional experiences of our desolation, disappointment and disillusionment to be expressed and heard in a trusting environment. Recently, I have begun to ask various parish groups to provide their respective members opportunities whereby they may express their personal experiences of the crisis. Several groups have already met and other meetings are being planned. We will hold two Listening Sessions hosted by Voice of the Faithful ( an organization whose goals are to support survivors of clergy sexual abuse, support priests of integrity and work for structural change within the Catholic Church. They will take place Saturday, September 8 from 10-11:30am in McKenna Hall and Sunday, September 9 from 3:30-5pm in the chapel. Additional programs and processes designed to prayerfully invoke the Spirit of healing and understanding are in development and will be announced at Mass and in the bulletin. Meanwhile, we are providing resources on our website at that may serve to inform parishioners, along with response form to submit additional feedback anonymously, if so desired. Finally, allow me to conclude by offering as a means of prayer, the iconic image of Michelangelo s Pieta to complement the following words of Pope Francis about Mary at the foot of the cross: Mary chose to stand at the foot of her Son s cross. She did so unhesitatingly, standing firmly by Jesus side. In this way, she reveals the way she lived her entire life. When we experience the desolation caused by these ecclesial wounds, we will do well, with Mary, to insist more upon prayer, seeking to grow all the more in love and fidelity to the Church (Spiritual Exercises, 319). She, the first of the disciples, teaches all of us as disciples how we are to halt before the sufferings of the innocent, without excuses or cowardice. To look to Mary is to discover the model of a true follower of Christ.

All are welcome! For more information on these opportunities, please contact David Pennington at dpennington@. Sacristans Needed for Trinity Hall Mass Sacristans are needed to help set up and take down the Hall Mass during the academic year. Sacristans are responsible for organizing the vessels, books, and other materials needed for the Hall Mass. They are also responsible for tidying up afterward. Most sacristans arrive to Mass about a half hour early to set up and stay an extra fifteen minutes to clean up. Sacristans are put on a rotating schedule and generally help once monthly. Ongoing training and support is provided. New Lector Training There will be a two-part training session for new lectors on September 4 and September 11 at 7pm. Lectors proclaim God s Word at the liturgy, and, so, must be interested in learning more about and praying with Sacred Scripture, comfortable with public speaking, and have the ability to project one s voice clearly. Please RSVP to David Pennington with the Mass time you most often attend. Youth Altar Server Training Youth in grades 5 and up are invited to participate as altar servers at Sunday Masses. Training will be provided on September 15 at 4:15pm or September 16 at 10:10am. Servers minister at the 9am in the Church and Hall or at other Mass times, as your family participates. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY God s Abiding Love Retreat (September 30 October 6, 2018) Registration deadline: September 16 This retreat was exactly what I needed to help me reestablish a daily prayer life and to review my friendship with God. I find that the daily 30-minute prayer and spiritual direction was the perfect time for me to start with. Sign up at Young Adult Community Mass Holy Trinity s Young Adult Community (YAC) gathers for its monthly Mass on September 9 at 7:15pm in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. Bill Kelley on spirituality on September 16 at 4pm in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. He will share with us his experience ministering to Latinos in South America and the United States, and how he found God amidst his experience and everyday struggles. Q&A will follow. Fr. Kelley is an Associate Pastor at Holy Trinity. The afternoon is hosted by the Young Adult Community and open to all parishioners. Young Adult Steering Committee Interest Have you enjoyed participating in events hosted by Holy Trinity s Young Adult Community (YAC)? Do you have ideas about how the YACs can better serve, connect, and retain Catholic young adults in our parish? Consider applying to be a leader on the YAC Steering Committee! One-year terms begin in January, with orientation in the fall. YACs need passionate and motivated leaders to ensure our community remains welcoming, faith-filled, and current. Every step was leading him to our door. From his baptism at a humble St. Margaret s parish in the Bronx, to meeting his wife, Kelly, at a campus ministry event at Harvard, to completing his marriage prep program and celebrating the sacraments of his three children at Holy Trinity, Kevin has been walking toward this calling. During his time as Assistant Principal, Kevin fell in love with the community: the earnestness of the faculty, the social justice commitment of the parish, the gift of Ignatian Spirituality, the dedication of the parents, and the delight of watching students learn and grow. There is so much joy in what we do, he says. Kevin is especially grateful when we come together as a school to worship, holding hands and saying Our Father at a school Mass, or greeting the kids at morning arrival, watching them run into the building, and seeing the look on their faces when the lesson clicks, Everyone tries so hard to live the mission every day. When asked if he gets first day jitters, Kevin jovially replies, I get every day jitters. From waking up in the middle of the night worrying about that kid or a struggling colleague to butterflies in his stomach at the start of every math class. But Kevin finds peace (and God) in our daily praying of the Examen, having lunch with the kids, and leading the math team in local competition. One of Kevin s favorite motivating quotes is from Irish playwright, Samuel Beckett: Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. It is with this heroic spirit that Kevin takes on the responsibility and privilege of being the next principal of Holy Trinity School.
