1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC February 11, 2018 Lent: A Time of Hope From On Hope by Pope Francis, Chicago: Loyola Press, On Ash Wednesday, we enter the liturgical season of Lent. I would like to suggest Lent to you as your personal journey of hope. Indeed, this prospect is immediately evident if we consider that Lent was instituted in the Church as a time of preparation for Easter and that, therefore the whole meaning of this forty-day period is illuminated by the Paschal Mystery toward which it is directed. We can imagine the risen Lord who calls us to come out of our darkness, and so we set ourselves on the path toward the One who is Light. Lent is a journey toward the risen Jesus; it is a period of repentance, also of mortification, not as an end but rather aimed at enabling us to rise with Christ, to renew our baptismal identity, that is, to be born anew of the Spirit, by the love of God. This is why Lent is, by nature, a time of hope. In order to better understand what this means, we must refer to the fundamental experience of the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, recounted in the Bible in the book which bears this name: Exodus. The point of departure was the condition of slavery in Egypt, oppression, forced labor. But the Lord has not forgotten his people and his promise: he calls Moses and enables the Israelites to flee from Egypt and guides them through the desert toward the land of liberty. Scripture shows that the exodus is long and tormented: symbolically, it lasts forty years, which is the life span of a generation. A generation which, faced with trials of the journeys, is always tempted to turn back to Egypt. We all know the temptation to turn back. But the Lord remains faithful and those poor people reach the Promised Land. The entire journey is carried out in hope: the hope of reaching the Land, and precisely in this sense it is an exodus, an escape from slavery to freedom. These forty days of Lent are also for us a release from slavery, from sin, to experience freedom, the encounter with the risen Christ. It s the question that probably makes me the most uncomfortable in my ministry as the Pastoral Associate for Liturgy here at Holy Trinity. I hope the question means to ask, What are we going to do by way of music and environment/decoration, ritual and celebration to enter more deeply into the season we celebrate? But even that s a generous retranslation of the original question. You see, what we are doing for Lent (or any liturgical season) misses the point of the season. We don t do anything for Lent. Lent does us. This week we start, one more time, our forty day journey toward Easter. Undoubtedly, many of us will use this time to undertake some additional spiritual practice or work of mercy. Some of us will empty the cupboard of chocolate, close tightly the bottle of scotch, or try the Whole 30 (or 40!) one more time. But if we focus only on the doing, on only our activity to be holier, skinnier, or more ready for Easter, we ll miss Lent. This week we start, one more time, from the end of our journey to look to the beginning. Ash Wednesday is a grim way to start our journey to Easter. It s a reminder of our mortality, that we are of the earth and willl return to it one day. But, as T.S. Eliot writes in the Four Quartets, the end of our exploring/ will be to arrive where we started/ and know the place for the first time. We start this season with dry ashes on our heads only to end it by bathing in the waters of baptism and anointing our heads with perfumed chrism, the oil of salvation. We begin this journey from the end to remember that the end of our exploring is not what we immediately perceive, that our lives as Christians will end, not with death, but in eternal glory with God. This week we start, one more time, not at our own prompting or initiative, but God s. It is God who calls us into the mystery of living as chosen sons and daughters and realizing more deeply what that means as we accompany one another on this journey and act as leaven in the world. And it is through the Liturgy that God invites us into the mysteries of life and death, suffering and glory, despair and hope. We don t have to do it ourselves. Ashes, palms, water, oil, bread, wine, and word are waiting to serve as invitations into the Lent God has prepared for us. So, what are we doing for Lent? We will celebrate the Liturgy in its fullness. And maybe come Easter, we will realize Lent has provided a time for God to change us, call us to conversion, prepare our hearts, heal our souls, and remind us that it is from the end we start, if only to see it new for the first time.

Sign-up at Lenten Schedule & Resources Online Visit for the complete schedule as well as additional resources for your journey. Receive Weekly Updates Sign-up at Lent a Time of Hope, cont. from page 1 This is the dynamic of Lent: Christ precedes us with his exodus... He is tempted for us, and has defeated the tempter for us, but we too must face temptations with him and overcome them. He gives us the living water of the Spirit; he is the light which conquers darkness, and we are asked to keep alight the little flame that was entrusted to us on the day of our baptism. Lent is the sacramental sign of our journey from slavery to freedom, always to be renewed. It is certainly a demanding journey, as it rightly should be, because love is demanding... With hearts open let us joyfully begin this journey of hope. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/ FAITH FORMATION February 7-14 is National Marriage Week!
