The camp served over 200 boys and girls. Cleats, socks, balls and t-shirts were made available to every camper. Trinity provided a lunch (chicken, rice and beans) for each student each day, and each camper received a medal at the closing of the camp. We re grateful to our HTS Haitian friends, Harry and Sophia Gray for organizing the camp and for training the Haitian coaches. Soccer is THE sport in Haiti. Offering a week of organized physical exercise, soccer drills and soccer games, is welcomed by the students and a great cultural event for the parish and surrounding communities. Also, lunch is critical as many of the campers might not otherwise eat. Holy Trinity Parish welcomes Fr. Kevin Gillespie, SJ! The Holy Trinity Haiti Committee is involved in many activities which help build solidarity with the Haitians at our sister parish. For example, we support St. Jean s coffee farmers as they develop an association and revive their coffee crops. For more information please contact Kittie Fitzgerald, kmbfitz@gmail.com or Kathy Lankford, kathylankford@yahoo.com. Liturgical Ministry Retreat Day On October 24th, liturgical ministers are invited to gather for a formation retreat day. A keynote address will be given by Brother William Woeger, FSC and there will be several breakout sessions on sacred architecture, liturgy, and sacraments. If you have not yet received a Paperless Post invitation via , please David Pennington (dpennington@) by October 17th.

I have found that stories are wonderful ways of revealing who you are. You will hear lots of stories from me. I am also eager to hear your stories, individually and collectively, as parishioners of this spiritually engaged and historically blessed parish. One story has to do with the Pilgrimage of Pope Francis to the United States. How wonderful it was for the parish that Father Mark as well as some of our students, and staff met Pope Francis when he was in Washington. This past Wednesday, as I visited and met for the first time with our Holy Trinity School students, I heard stories about the Holy Father s visit. Perhaps you saw the TV news story in which several of our students were interviewed. I am sure that many of you have your own stories of being inspired by seeing Pope Francis either in person or through the extensive media coverage. I saw, but did not meet, Pope Francis several times when I was in Philadelphia last weekend. One special story emerged during the Holy Father s final Mass on Sunday afternoon on the parkway in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum. I was humbled and honored to concelebrate with Pope Francis along with several hundred priests, some cardinals and many bishops. It was a glorious event. More than two hundred of us were asked to give communion to the thousands who had gathered there. And so I found myself being led by a member of the Knights of Columbus to a station along the parkway. It was a bit chaotic as there was not the ordinary communion line; instead I faced a sea of people from around the world who were coming forward in waves in front of me, to my left and to the right. In reaching out their hands to receive the Eucharist they seemed humbled by the occasion. As I pronounced the words, The Body of Christ into their outstretched hands, I looked at their faces and glimpsed into their eyes. As I did so, a profound awareness of what I was witnessing dawned on me. These people, who came from all over the world, really did represent The Body of Christ and I found myself to be a pilgrim like one of them. In sharing the Eucharist with them at the Mass presided by the pilgrim Pope, I sensed that all of us were sharing a pilgrimage together, a pilgrimage leading us toward God as one human body. In and through our journey toward God through the Eucharist we were all pilgrims, like Pope Francis. One image I have of a parish is that it is a place of pilgrimage. Each Sunday, as faith-filled parishioners, you come to Mass at Holy Trinity, seeking and finding, reaching and receiving just as the pilgrims at Pope Francis final Mass. And so this Sunday, my first as your pastor, I come as a pilgrim sent by the Society of Jesus to listen to your stories of pilgrimage and to tell a few of my own. -Fr. Kevin 2nd Vice President Constance Herron

4 Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC www. October 4, 2015 page 4 IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Pope Francis Pope Francis spoke to Congress ten days ago and mentioned four Americans who shaped fundamental values which will endure forever in the spirit of the American people: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. He continued, A century ago, at the beginning of the Great War, which Pope Benedict XV termed a pointless slaughter, another notable American was born: the Cistercian monk Thomas Merton. He remains a source of spiritual inspiration and a guide for many people... Merton was above all a man of prayer, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and for the Church. He was also a man of dialogue, a promoter of peace between peoples and religions. How do you foster dialogue and understanding among the people you encounter, especially among those with whom you disagree? SOCIAL JUSTICE Climate Corner Laudato Si Chapter 6: Ecological Education and Spirituality On this Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, let us, like Pope Francis, call to mind the figure of St Francis of Assisi [and] come to realize that a healthy relationship with creation is one dimension of overall personal conversion (para. 218). The Pope also notes that Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of practices. All of these reflect a generous and worthy creativity which brings out the best in human beings. Reusing something instead of immediately discarding it, when done for the right reasons, can be an act of love which expresses our own dignity. (para. 211) How might we be called to respond to the Pope s words? Might we consider taking the St. Francis Pledge: Reading "Laudato Si Learning more about ways to be more environmentally responsible from the Catholic Climate Covenant Looking for workshops on the environment run by organizations like the National Arboretum, DC Parks and Rec, or Montgomery, Arlington or Fairfax Counties Sharing your insights with others.
