2 Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC www. May 29, 2016 page 2 MISSION STATEMENT Holy Trinity is a Catholic parish sponsored by the Society of Jesus. We share the Society's mission to serve the faith and to promote justice. As disciples of Christ, we seek to be transformed by the Holy Spirit through our celebration of Eucharist and our practice of Ignatian spirituality into a welcoming and prayerful community that shares God's life and love with each other and the world. As you may recall from a previous Pastor s Column, the PAR is a yearlong process designed to move the parish toward a strategic plan. Besides information obtained from the questionnaire and the ad hoc groups, a series of parish information gathering sessions will occur for two weeks in September. At that time, a team from the Parish Evaluation Project led by Fr. Tom Sweetser, S.J., will engage even m ore parishioners in the PAR process. One session, in which all parishioners will be invited, will involve a Town Hall on Sunday afternoon, September 18th. In the meantime an oversight committee of 9 parishioners cochaired by Larry Padberg and Tina Naimon have helped to coordinate the more than one dozen ad hoc group meetings. For the purpose of the ad hoc meetings, the ministerial areas have been divided into 6 categories. They are the following: Administration (which includes Development, Facilities and Finance) Community (which includes Parish Life Committee and Young Adult Community) Formation (which includes Holy Trinity School, Religious Education, RCIA and Youth Ministry Ignatian Spirituality (includes 15 groups) Social Justice (includes 16 groups) Worship (includes 10 groups) As part of the PAR process a number of data points have been discovered, including the fact that there are more than 90 groups associated with Holy Trinity s 14 ministries What a truly amazing number and a reflection of the generous engagement of so many of you. Thank you. As the PAR process continues to unfold stay tuned for more updates. On another note, I would like to take this opportunity to inform the parish that effective this week, the parish s Jesuit Community became officially subsumed by the Georgetown Jesuit Community. While Frs. Bill Ryan, John Peck and myself will still reside in the rectory, we are now members of the larger community based at Wolfington Hall on the Georgetown University campus. Father Joseph Lingan, who often presides and preaches at Holy Trinity s, will serve as our new religious superior. -Fr. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Save the Date God s Abiding Love Retreat October 2-8, 2016 or January 29th - February 4th, 2017 A one week long individually directed retreat made at home for individuals who are new to praying with Scripture in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, that is, engaging the intellect and the imagination. Lenten Retreat: Drawn from the Spiritual Exercises February 26 - April 8, 2017 A six week long individually directed retreat made at home for individuals who have made the full Spiritual Exercises or another Ignatian retreat and want to engage in a practice of daily prayer during Lent. (cont. in next column) IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY (cont.) First Spiritual Exercises In the book the Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius Loyola suggests that the Exercises could be made in two ways: the Full Spiritual Exercises (nine months or over a thirty day period of time) and the First Spiritual Exercises (made over a shorter period of time). We will offer two opportunities to make the First Spiritual Exercises this year: Inner Peace in Divine Love October 16 - November 20, 2016 A group of ten retreatants and two facilitators will meet for six consecutive Sunday afternoons. The focus of the retreat will be on the loving relationship each of us has with God. Inner Peace in Darkness and Light March 5 - April 9, 2017 Retreatants will gather in a group for six consecutive Sunday afternoons during Lent. The retreat begins with God s love for the retreatant, which then unfolds into invitations to ponder ways that as human beings we do not love as God loves. Brochures and registration forms will be available online and at the entrances to the church and chapel after August 1st. Please contact Martina O Shea moshea@ with questions. Registration and more information can be found on the Confirmation page on the website: Gracious God, on this Memorial Day weekend, we remember and give thanks for those who have given their lives in the service of our country. When the need was greatest, they stepped forward and did their duty to defend the freedoms that we enjoy, and to win the same for others. O God, you yourself have taught us that no love is greater than that which gives itself for another. These honored dead gave the most precious gift they had, life itself, for loved ones and neighbors, for comrades and country and for us. Help us to honor their memory by caring for the family members they have left behind, by ensuring that their wounded comrades are properly cared for, by being watchful caretakers of the freedoms for which they gave their lives, and by demanding that no other young men and women follow them to a soldier s grave. Holy One, help us to remember that freedom is not free. There are times when its cost is, indeed, dear. Never let us forget those who paid so terrible a price to ensure that freedom would be our legacy. Though their names may fade with the passing of generations, may we never forget what they have done. Help us to be worthy of their sacrifice, O God, help us to be worthy. Amen. -J. Veltri, S.J.
