Leo A. Murray, SJ, a native of Baltimore who applied his skill and vision to appointments from director of communications to high school principal to pastor, died July 23 at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia at the age of 85. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Weston College in Massachusetts; earned a licentiate of Sacred Theology from Woodstock College in western Baltimore County; and a doctor of Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris in France. As a scholastic and young priest, Fr. Murray spent nearly 20 years at his high school alma mater, Loyola High School, before becoming Rector at Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC. From 1987 to 1990, he served in London as director of the Jesuit-sponsored Center for Communications and Culture. He also served as director of communications for the Jesuits' Maryland Province; led retreats at Manresa-on-Severn and was assistant director of a Woodstock Theological Center program that assisted priests in effectively preaching biblical and social justice. In 2003, he came to Holy Trinity Church as Parochial Vicar and served in many other pastoral ministries for more than 10 years, including a program called Shepherd s Flock that offered Mass in a special way to children with disabilities. Rev. James M. English, SJ, was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 11, He received his Bachelor s degree and Licentiate in Philosophy from Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, NY, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Sacred Theology and Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Woodstock College in Woodstock, MD. As a Jesuit scholastic, Fr. English spent three years in Jamshedpur, India, teaching English and ethics. Following his ordination, he became headmaster at Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC, before beginning a nine-year tenure at Holy Trinity Church, as parochial minister, assistant pastor and pastor. In 2001, served on the Campus Ministry staff at Georgetown University. Fr. English lived at the Colombiere and Manresa Hall Jesuit Communities for more than ten years, serving in pastoral ministry and praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus. He died at Manresa Hall outside Philadelphia on July 22, 2016 at the age of 80. A parish Memorial Fund will be established for both Fr. Murray and Fr. English. This summer we have had several. There was, of course, the passing of two of our brother Jesuits, Fr. Jim English and Fr. Leo Murray. Both were closely associated with Holy Trinity Parish. Fr. Jim passed away at Manresa Hall, our Jesuit infirmary in Philadelphia, on Friday, July 22. He served the parish from , the last six years as pastor. Many of you have shared with me the formative influence that Fr. Jim had on your life and those of your children. A Memorial Fund is being planned in his name and a Sharing of Memories event will take place in early October. We will share more information with you in the coming weeks. On Saturday, July 23, again at Manresa Hall, Fr. Leo passed away. He was beloved by so many of you for his ministry to the parish from Many of you were inspired by his gentle wisdom, his gracious witness and his lively wit. I can still hear his silvery and beautiful baritone voice projecting profound insights from his handsome face and bright smile. A parish Memorial Fund is being planned in his honor as is a Sharing of Memories event. This event will take place on Sunday afternoon, September 11th at 3:00 in St. Ignatius Chapel. Several weeks ago Fr. John Peck moved on to begin his philosophical studies at the University of Notre Dame. On Tuesday, August 1 we were blessed with the arrival of his replacement, Fr. Paul Campbell. Having earned a doctorate in the field of Communications from Syracuse University, Fr. Paul has most recently served as the publisher of Loyola University Press. His previous ministries have included serving on the faculty of LeMoyne College and serving as a missionary in Japan. Born in Belfast Fr. Paul grew up in Northern Ireland, and so I believe that HTP parishioners will discover that he has a wonderful way of turning a phrase and tuning a conversation. Please join me in welcoming Father Paul to the wonderful parish of Holy Trinity! Finally, many of you may remember Fr. Bill Byron who served as pastor from On Wednesday night (July 27 th ), he delivered the Invocation at the Democratic National Convention. Apolitical in content, Fr. Byron s words stressed the need to ask for God s guidance, given the violent events that have occurred in our nation and throughout the world this summer. I encourage you to watch his invocation. August 7 and August 14, 2016 page 4 WORSHIP Solemnity of the Assumption The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is observed on Monday, August 15. This solemnity celebrates the mystery of the Virgin Mary s assumption into heaven and the foretaste of heavenly glory which awaits those who die in the Lord. Because the feast falls on a Monday this year, the Assumption is not a holy day of obligation. Eucharist will be celebrated at the regular times in the Chapel on August 15. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Welcome Catherine Heinhold, Pastoral Assistant for Ignatian Programming Catherine returned to the U.S. at the end of last year after serving five years in mission in São Paulo, Brazil with Maryknoll Lay Missioners. At Santa Terezinha Parish in the northern periphery of São Paulo, she worked with catechists, providing them with initial and ongoing formation. As an agent of the Archdiocese of São Paulo s Prison Ministry, Catherine made weekly pastoral visits to a penitentiary and regularly facilitate, d a 10-week course on Forgiveness, Reconciliation, and Restorative Justice for inmates. She also worked with the Anchietanum, a Jesuit center for young adults, providing spiritual direction on retreats and other activities. Before Catherine s time in Brazil, she was the Director of the Catholic Chaplaincy and Retreat Program at Georgetown University. She is originally from Wilmington, Delaware and has lived most of her adult life in Washington. Much of her immediate family live in the DC metro area and she enjoys spending time with her niece and four nephews. A member of our Ignatian Retreat Team, who guides retreatants in making the Exercises, shares his reflection: The transformative nature of the Exercises make it difficult to point to any one aspect that stands out. I would say, however, that the Exercises made it possible for God's grace to help me become freer, more "indifferent," to listening to and accepting God's gentle invitations. This freedom allowed me to put myself into God's hands so He could draw me into a deeper relationship. I don't achieve that; God does it with my cooperation. Discussion Group: Bernadette Roberts on Diving Union and Experience of No-self One Saturday a month from 8:45-10:00 am beginning September 10th in the Parish Library Bernadette Roberts (b. 1933) is a contemplative in the Catholic tradition, who had experiences of the Dark Nights and of the state of divine Union as described by John of the Cross. After years of life in union with God, he described an event she called the experience of no-self. For her, the falling away of self revealed a hitherto unseen dimension of existence, which she sees as being the Mystical Body of Christ. We would try to understand her path to this state of noself.. We would think together about the various levels of meaning in what we read. References to other books or theological approaches or to historical or biographical facts would be avoided. Our discussion facilitator is Robert Druecker, who has been leading seminars of this nature for over 30 years at St. John s College in Annapolis, MD. Space is limited and registration is required. SOCIAL JUSTICE Join the Social Justice Committee The Social Justice Committee is seeking new members to help guide the parish in accomplishing this mission for a two to three year term. Interested parishioners should be passionate about social justice, willing to raise social justice visibility, ready to provide regular hands-on support to parish ministries, and interested in helping lead the work of the parish in this area. This is a working board that meets at least monthly with additional responsibilities outside of monthly meetings. Interested parishioners should contact Kate Tromble at ktromble@ or (202) School Supplies Drive We are collecting school supplies for the students at the Washington Jesuit Academy, the Washington School for Girls, and Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services. Specific needs include: backpacks, loose leaf paper, pencils, pens, 1- & 3- subject notebooks, highlighters, glue sticks, scissors, markers, crayons, pencil cases, sharpeners and construction paper. Washington Jesuit Academy Open The WJA open will take place on Friday, Sept. 16 at Falls Road Golf Course - the day before the 2016 Gridiron Classic between Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep. Both events spotlight the mission and work of the Washington Jesuit Academy. Take the day off on Friday, join the fun, and support Washington Jesuit Academy. Information: wjaopen.splashthat.com. Volunteers Needed Volunteer to assist 8th Graders at San Miguel School, a Christian Brothers school located in DC, serves at risk, low-income boys, mostly from Latin America. Almost 100 percent of the boys qualify for free or reduced lunches. The school has a specific need for adults who could work once a week during the fall semester with its eighth graders as they prepare personal essays for their high school applications. Several Holy Trinity parishioners assisted last year and enjoyed the experience. If you would like to join them in this shortterm project, please contact Kate Tromble at (202) or ktromble@. FAITH FORMATION/ RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Sunday Morning Religious Education Registration for new parishioners are accepted at any time. Registration forms may be found on our web page. Returning families, please submit your form ASAP. Look for calendars for all RE Programs on our website by August 15th. Catechists Still Needed! If you have been thinking about serving the Parish this upcoming year and haven t settled on a ministry please spend time considering becoming a catechist for our K - 8 Religious Education Program. DEVELOPMENT Parish Pledge Update We are grateful for those who have already supported the 2016 Parish Pledge. The Parish Pledge is a budgeted goal that supports the various ministries and educational programs that our parish is called to provide. To date, we have reached 86% of our budgeted goal of $3 Million. If you have not yet made your pledge, we ask that you please do so very soon.
