Too often considered merely a season of preparation for the annual commemoration of Christ s birth, this rich and many-layered season is actually designed to prepare the Christian for the glorious possibilities of the end times. It is a season of longing expectation - Come, Lord Jesus (Rev. 22:20). - William G. Storey Do you have this thought every year about this time: It s Advent already? Where did the time go? Has the season of preparation left you with very little time to actually prepare for it? In a world where we are seemingly connected 24/7, we may feel less connected to Advent in our hearts and minds. Yet, we are all connected to centuries of faithful people longing for the Savior s coming, and Advent is the time to reconnect. At Holy Trinity, we want to make this reconnecting easier for you and more meaningful. Our Adult Faith Formation, Social Justice, Ignatian Spirituality and Liturgy ministries are offering a variety of ways in which you can embrace this season of reflection and connect with its purpose. Whether you are looking for an opportunity to share in a small group, an educational opportunity or just some needed reflection and prayer time, there are programs to meet your needs. We would do something to celebrate Christmas before we both left Washington, D.C. for the holiday. (I hope that sounds as ridiculous to you as it does to me ) That year, we went to see Messiah at the Kennedy Center. It was my first time seeing Handel's oratorio, heard over and over in concert halls in the days leading up to Christmas. Admittedly naïve, I leaned over to my friend and wondered I thought the Hallelujah Chorus was a Christmas song. We had to wait until Easter! Advent has always occupied a special place in my imagination. As a child, it was because of our Advent rituals. We lit the candles of the Advent wreath on the kitchen table and battled every year over which week belonged to the pink candle. We sang songs at church that we didn't hear at any other time of the year. While the rest of the world was tired of "All I Want for Christmas is You" by mid-december, in church we hadn't heard one strain of "O Come, All Ye Faithful." Resisting the temptation to peek behind the doors of our Advent calendar taught me something about patience and anticipation. What I came to realize, though, is that Advent, with all of these little traditions, encapsulates the tension of living the Christian life. We live in the here and now, knowing that Christ took on flesh so that all people could share his divinity, but longing for the day when he will return to us. The memory of his first coming gives us hope for his second coming, but it somehow doesn t satisfy our deepest longings. Despite our memory and our hope, we long for the day when our confusion and struggles are eased, when our life s mountains will be lowered and valleys filled, when the lion will lie down with the lamb, and when peace will reign. Living in Advent is living in tension - aware of what is our past and what we long our future to be. Every day we live in the Advent tension between life and death, of suffering and wholeness, of love and loss, of sickness and health, of peace and violence, of acceptance and rejection, of excess and poverty, of oneness and loneliness, of questions and surety, of hope and doubt. The question is, do we recognize Christ in this tension? As my friend and I walked out of the Kennedy Center that night, I realized that, despite an attempt at celebrating Christmas, we glimpsed an Advent moment. We were reminded, one more time, that without the Passion, we could not shout "Hallelujah!" The tension of Advent living surrounds us, but how well do we take the time to see how Christ is manifested in our uncertainty and woundedness? If we do recognize Christ in our daily tension, we will also share in the new life that Christ brings with his Resurrection. That's an Advent worth celebrating.

However, we encourage parishioners to mention specific persons by name during the General Intercessions when invited to do so by the presider. Parishioners may also request that a specific person be remembered by name at a particular weekday Mass by calling or visiting the receptionist s desk in the Parish Center during normal office hours. Names must be submitted one week in advance. November 27, 2016 page 4 Season of Advent Offerings Welcome a New Liturgical Year As we usher in a new liturgical year and begin a new lectionary cycle, Fr. William Ryan, S.J., will present Round and Round: Liturgical Year and the Lectionary to offer you a new insight into the readings for the coming year. Join him on Sunday, December 4 at 10:10am., Saint Ignatius Chapel. Share Your Generosity: Giving Trees Beginning this weekend, Giving Trees will be in the church and McKenna Hall. You and your family are invited to take a tag or two from the tree, purchase the item(s) and return your gift(s) by December 18. We will distribute them to the various agencies. Be sure to place your tag on the gift so it makes it to right recipient! Involve your children in this activity by letting them choose a tag or taking them shopping for your gifts. Gather to Pray & Reflect Join us Tuesday, November 29 as we gather the Ignatian community. All are welcome for a prayer service with a short reflection, followed by a reception. 6:30-8:30pm, Dahlgren Chapel, Georgetown University. Fr. Joseph Lingan, S.J., will offer the reflection. Attend a Reflection Day Holy Trinity Seniors Group & Ignatian Retreat Team invite Holy Trinity Seniors to an Advent Day of Guided Prayer and Reflection on Tuesday, November 29 from 10am-3pm in Potomac, MD. Attend Advent Vespers Evening prayer will take place Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00pm in the Church. This traditional evening of prayer and music will also include time for individual reflection. Honor the Blessed Virgin Honor the Blessed Virgin Thursday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. To reflect upon this mystery, Luke s Gospel proclaims the story of the Annunciation. The angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus, and Mary responds, Let it be done to me as you say. Mary is the model of discipleship for all Christians. Mass will be at 7am, 8am and 6:30pm in the Church.

Peter Gyves, S.J., will present our keystone event for this Advent season, a four-session seminar on Sunday Wednesday, December Beginning with the conversion of Ignatius of Loyola, the sessions will move through themes of gratitude, faith in action and the cost of discipleship and culminate in the triumph of love and truth. While attending all four sessions will provide the richest experience, it is not necessary to attend all four. Sunday s session is from 3pm-5pm. The weeknight sessions are from 6:30pm 8:30pm. All are in McKenna Hall. Understand the Gospel of Matthew It is important to read and understand Matthew s Gospel because of its communal nature. Alan Mitchell explains its pastoral and catechetical nature. This Gospel is an excellent guide for how we can proceed on that journey and become one with each other in faith. Pray for Those in Need For two weeks over the Christmas holidays, Holy Trinity hosts the Georgetown Ministries Homeless Winter shelter for approximately 10 to 12 adults. Volunteers have already generously filled all the slots for the shelter s needs, but your prayers for our brothers and sisters in need are appreciated.
