1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC May 6, 2018 Bread for the World Offering of Letters Every day, millions of people in the U.S. and around the world feed and support their families in part because of lifesaving programs funded by our government. Today, we will be raising our collective voices to ask Congress to invest in and protect key programs that help improve the lives of men, women and children facing hunger and poverty. Stop by McKenna Hall today after Mass to send a letter to your member of Congress. YACs Reflect on Final Retreat at Bellarmine On the third weekend of April, 51 young adults from Holy Trinity, other parishes in the Archdiocese, and cities as far as Philadelphia, Richmond, and Dallas made their way to Bellarmine Retreat Center at Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania for the biannual Young Adult Community (YAC) Retreat. Each YAC retreat is peer-led and planned, with members organizing all details, giving talks, cooking, and serving as small-group leaders. Like all YAC retreats, the weekend s themes were based in Catholic and Ignatian spirituality. This retreat, What Next? Finding Answers with Faith, focused on transitions that people in their 20s and 30s often experience graduation from college and grad school, the beginning and end of romantic relationships, marriage, new jobs and new cities, and changing friendship dynamics. Through catechetical talks and prayer experiences, the retreatants were encouraged to connect their transition experiences of loss, waiting in hope, and new life with the Paschal Mystery experience of Jesus s death, the disciples confusion and attempts to make sense of things on Holy Saturday, and the resurrection. Three young adults gave Continued on page 5 MAIN CHURCH 36th Street, between N and O Streets, NW Washington, DC PARISH CENTER 3513 N Street, NW Washington, DC (202) www. /HolyTrinity Today s Events Gaudete et Exsultate 10:15-11:30am, Trinity Hall Fr. (I must look awfully haggard!) I was thinking about my post-easter vacation while cleaning some Easter Vigil remnants I shoved in a closet in a fit of procrastination. Among the items to be cleaned were over 500 vigil candles and cups needing to be disassembled, sorted and boxed. I thought about the hands that held these candles several nights before as we processed outside on 36th Street and how they illumined the church as we stood in Vigil. I thought about those who could not process because of illness or recent surgery, children who gathered with anticipation around the Easter fire, parishioners who worked so hard in preparation for the celebration, and the 17 who were about to be baptized. But then I became overwhelmed with the real work of Easter which wasn t behind me, but was only beginning. It occurred to me that we input so much energy into our Lents and Triduums that we neglect to realize that the real work of Easter is living the Christian Life. In these last several weeks, we ve celebrated hundreds of First Communions, scores of Baptisms, and received adults from other faith traditions into Full Communion of the Catholic Church. In a couple of weeks, we ll celebrate the Confirmation of hundreds of parish youth. Each week, we ve been doused in water at the beginning of Sunday Eucharist as a reminder of our own baptisms. The real work of Easter is made manifest in the Easter Sacraments we celebrate when we are grafted onto the vine of Christ in Baptism, sealed by the oil of gladness in Confirmation, and made more and more like the person of Christ at the Eucharistic table. We ve heard about the real work of Easter every Sunday since. The real work of Easter is to grow more and more into the person of Christ to sanctify the world, to proclaim justice to the oppressed and speak truth to power, to live as God s children. The real work of Easter is to recognize that Christ s Resurrection invites us to find life despite death, hope instead of despair, and rebirth from sin. The real work of Easter is to practice becoming more Christ-like- to share all things in common, to dedicate ourselves to the hearing of Scripture and the Breaking of the Bread, to recognize the burning of our hearts when Christ makes himself present to us, and to share all of this with the world. After so many Holy Week liturgies we may need naps on Easter afternoon, but the real work of Easter has little to do with dismantling candles, creating rubrics and rehearsing music and readings. The real work of Easter happens every day, strengthened by the celebration of the Sacraments, until the day when we are called back to the Risen One and need sacraments no more.

I thank you for everything that you do, but above all, because you are part of the Church, the pilgrim People of God, and you accompany God s People on that pilgrimage. Let us remain with Christ abiding in Christ and let us always try to be one with him. Let us follow him, let us imitate him in his movement of love, in his going forth to meet humanity. Let us go forth and open doors. Let us have the audacity to mark out new paths for proclaiming the Gospel." Catechists are needed for the year. Are you willing to open doors for our youth? Please consider serving as a catechist. Contact Judith Brusseau or Mary Tull at REadmin@ to explore how your talent and time may help spread the "good news." YAC Retreat, cont. from page 1 brief talks witnessing to their own experiences of transition, and relating them to stages of the Paschal Mystery. One retreatant commented about the witness talks, I really appreciate the gesture and modeling of vulnerability and openness from those sharing their stories. Each talk was followed by an hour of personal reflection time, and then an hour of small group discussion. Throughout the weekend, Steve Surovick, S.J. was available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Catherine Heinhold provided opportunities for spiritual direction. The weather was wonderful, so some retreatants spent free time hiking part of the Appalachian trail and enjoying the sunshine. Saturday night s bonfire was a favorite element of YAC retreats, strengthening the bonds of community and friendship. As Bellarmine will cease operations in September (in preparation for the property to be sold), this was the final gathering there after more than 30 years of YAC retreats. Before the bonfire, the group gathered in prayer around the fire pit to give thanks for the time spent over the years at Bellarmine and to name out loud some of the graces God has given each person there. A highlight of the retreat was the Friday night prayer service, which incorporated the ancient Christian practice of walking a labyrinth. The labyrinth was made of electric candles on the floor, which created a peaceful atmosphere and symbolized the light of Christ. With a lit candle in their hands and reflecting on the transitions in their lives, retreatants walked to the center of the labyrinth as passages from scripture were whispered to them as encouragement. Upon their exit from the labyrinth, each young adult gently placed their floating candle into a bowl of water as a gesture of surrender to God. One retreatant commented, The labyrinth was most beautiful, moving prayer service I have experienced in a long time. Holy Trinity is blessed with an active and dynamic Young Adult Community may the graces received on this retreat bear fruit in this parish! Be a Part of the Planning! We will host two informational meetings for interested volunteers: May 15 at 6pm and May 20 at 3pm. Committee opportunities include: Lecture Series, Founders Day Street Fair, history projects, sponsorships and more. If you have time, talents and ideas you are willing to share, please plan to join us at either meeting. RSVP to communications@.
