1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC January 29, 2017 Holy Trinity School Celebrates 43rd Annual Catholic Schools Week National Catholic Schools Week, sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association, is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The theme this year, Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service, closely mirrors Holy Trinity School s own mission. As a key ministry of the church, Holy Trinity School (HTS) is committed to the Jesuit traditions of educational excellence, the service of faith and the promotion of justice. Since the school s founding in 1818, HTS has continued to integrate the spirituality of St. Ignatius into its mission, the heart of which is developing young women and men who excel academically and use their expanding skills in service to the community. The Catholic identity of the school reminds its students, teachers, and staff to act with initiative and integrity and to engage the world as a place in which God can be found in all things. The school will be focusing on the Faith part of the theme today, January 29. HTS students will wear their uniforms to Mass and participate as lectors, ushers, altar servers and by bringing up the gifts. The school will celebrate Knowledge on Monday (Academic Day), Friday (Trivia Night) and Saturday, when HTS will host a Debate Tournament for teams from local schools. On Tuesday, the school will celebrate Service with an all-school assembly with speaker Catherine Albornaz from Catholic Relief Services. HTS s distinctive focus on service encourages students to develop empathy and a conscience rooted in social justice. School service projects emphasize family participation, offering parents and students opportunities for personal growth as they work together with the parish and others to serve those in need. Favorites include bi-annual gleaning; Sunday dinners for the homeless; annual Food Drive, a multi-parish partnership; weekly sandwich making for the homeless; a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive; Advent Giving Tree; Catholic Charities Cup O Joe; Operation Rice Bowl; and the Power of One day of family service. Gillespie. Over the past two weeks, more than 35 parish volunteers have expressed these words on my behalf as they participated in Holy Trinity s annual Phone-A-Thon. Close to 1,400 calls have been made to parishioners so far. While we would have liked to speak with each household individually to discuss the pledge, listen to your feedback and correct any household information, most of our outreach efforts resulted in messages being left in parishioner s voic . f I am grateful to the volunteers and to those parishioners who made a pledge or even increased their pledge. I should note, however, that there has been some confusion among many parishioners who have agreed to have their pledge taken regularly from their credit or debit card. While you may have recurring charges to your credit card from one year to the next, your pledge needs to be acknowledged every year either by phone, or completion of a new pledge card. This assumption seems to represent one of the most significant reasons that we have had a shortfall in pledges this year. This past week the Finance Council and I addressed some of the significant average decreases. For example, in December or 2015 there were 1,572 households who made pledges while this past December there were 1,297 who did so. This represented a 275 or 15% decrease! Moreover, the pledge total suffered a decrease from $2, 853,000 to $2,603,000 or a 9% decrease. As you might imagine these and other decreases are a significant concern to the members of the Finance Committee and myself. Therefore I urge you to acknowledge your 2017 pledge with an or phone call to Shauna Creary, the accountant in our Parish Office at or screary@. This week we will also be sending year-end contribution statements for Please reach out to Shauna if you have any questions or concerns with your contributions from 2016 or need corrections to your household information. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to all those who have made their annual pledges. Your generous donations enable our Parish to provide a vibrant series of programs in Sacramental Ministry, Ignatian Spirituality, Social Justice, Liturgy, Religious Education, Youth Ministry and so on. In so doing, you are helping to provide resources whereby each of us may find support in caring for one another as we journey with Christ in the world. Thank you.

David Pennington will lead a liturgical formation session focusing on the signs, symbols, rituals, and texts that constitute Catholic liturgy on February 11, 9:30am- 11am,. We will explore how symbols and texts shape our rituals and how we engage at the liturgy with all our senses. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY A Lenten Retreat: Drawn from the Spiritual Exercises An Ignatian Retreat in Daily Life February 26 April 8 Register online at Deadline is Monday, February 13 The retreat will be crafted for where you are on your journey with and to God and will offer a taste of what is involved in making the eight to nine-month retreat. The baby shall play by the viper s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder s lair. (Is.11,v.8) When I first started reflecting on Isaiah s prophetic vision of paradise, On God s Holy Mountain, I was struck by how hard it was going to be to achieve his dream. Perhaps I could see that the wolf could be the guest of the lamb, or the leopard lie down with the young goat. Animal behavior after all could be re-configured with the right training and perhaps some DNA adjustments. But I could never contemplate how his last couplet could be achieved where the baby shall play at the viper s den and the child lay his hand on the adder s lair. I have detested snakes since childhood, and I couldn t imagine putting any child outside a serpent s den, whether the snakes inside were poisonous or not. I couldn t imagine myself as that child. I think it was then that I realized Isaiah was calling me to reflect on where I was stuck. What was the deepest blockage that was keeping me from God s mountain? I didn t have to spend much time pondering that question. For years I have been estranged from my younger brother. A real estate deal went bad, we ended up in court, where we said very bad things about the other. The suit got settled but our relationship was caput and has remained frozen ever since. So I got up the courage to send him an (it felt like putting my hand on the adder s lair) and he wrote back (no sting) and we exchanged a few more s, more perfunctory but a start. There is still a long journey ahead if we are to sit down at The Table of Brotherhood, Martin Luther King s beautiful image of a reconciled people. But I pray for him and his family, pray that there may be more softening of both our hearts and pray that someday we will be together On God s Holy Mountain. -Prepared by parishioner Roger Sullivan SOCIAL JUSTICE Social Justice Book Club All are welcome to the first meeting of the Holy Trinity Social Justice Book Club on Monday, January 30. 5 Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC www. January 29, 2017 page Cardinal s Appeal Holy Trinity Parishioners should have received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl in early January. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2017 Cardinal s Appeal. The Cardinal s Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries at Holy Trinity Parish. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2017 Cardinal s Appeal. Visit ww.appeal.adw.org to donate online.
