1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC October 30, 2016 We are now exclusively serving Just Haiti coffee after Mass! See page 5 for more details. Light Through Yonder Windows The plywood is gone and light is once again breaking through recently restored stained glass windows in the church. The generosity of donors to the recent Capital Campaign provided the funds to undertake this much needed restoration. The largest set of windows, the tall windows along the sides of the church, are the oldest glass in the church and probably date to the 1880s. Accomplished in a late 19th century interpretation of the medieval grisaille style, they were likely made in the United States and provide the only color accents remaining in the church from its elaborate decorative scheme of that era. The complete set, largely undamaged, serves as a kind of tapestry in glass and, together with the glass at the main entry and over the altar, is an excellent example of early American art glass. The rondels of Saints Isaac Jogues and Robert Bellarmine on either side of the altar come from the former Woodstock College and were inserted in the 1979 church renovation. Femenella and Associates, a stained glass restoration firm out of New Jersey, is removing and transporting the glass to their studios, cataloging each window, cleaning each piece of glass, releading the pieces back together and replacing them in the window frames. In reinstalling the glass, Femenella uses a process called iso-thermal glazing which simultaneously protects the art glass from the outside elements and provides ample ventilation in the interstitial space between the protective glass and the art glass. This kind of glazing provides a museum-like atmosphere and places less thermal stress on the glass and leading. Looking at the altar, the first three windows on the right and the first window on the left are complete. While the next two windows on the left have been cleaned and releaded, Femenella will be reinstalling them using the iso-thermal glazing technique employed on the other windows. Two windows are currently in studio for cleaning, but have been replaced by photographic replicas. The remaining windows will be taken out later this fall. All of the glass restoration work should be completed in the Easter season. Deep thanks to the donors to the Capital Campaign whose generosity makes this project possible and to Tass McCarthy, Director of Facilities, who is overseeing the project's completion. 2 Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington, DC www. October 30, 2016 page 2 MISSION STATEMENT Holy Trinity is a Catholic parish sponsored by the Society of Jesus. We share the Society's mission to serve the faith and to promote justice. As disciples of Christ, we seek to be transformed by the Holy Spirit through our celebration of Eucharist and our practice of Ignatian spirituality into a welcoming and prayerful community that shares God's life and love with each other and the world. PARISH CENTER Phone: Fax: Hours: Mon-Thur: 8:30am-7:30pm; Fri: 8:30am- 4:30pm; Sat & Sun: No receptionist on duty, but the parish center is accessible during mass times. Recently, Jesuit Refugee Services named a concert tour for the refugees by the name, Lampedusa. Several months ago, Jack Brady, a longstanding Holy Trinity parishioner, informed me his wife Gail Griffith was helping Jesuit Refugees Service to organize an 11-city concert tour for the educational needs of refugees. Major musicians would be part of the tour. Through Jack and Gail s generosity, a group of Holy Trinity parishioners and myself received tickets to attend the Lampedusa Tour s last concert at George Washington University's Lisner auditorium on Friday, October 21. It was an amazing experience for all. Upon arriving at the concert, my first impression was that it was going to be a real retro concert for baby boomers like myself. As I spanned the large crowd, however, it seemed that there were a wide range of ages, which the entertainment style of the performers reflected. There was someone and some song for everyone. Emmylou Harris, a 13-time Grammy winner, was highlighted, as was Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame. American music entertainer Steve Earle was also there and entertained us with his story and songs ( Galway Girl was especially crowdpleasing anyone who has visited an Irish Pub in the last decade has probably heard this crowd-clapping song). For millennials, there was The Milk Carton Kids, who impressed this baby boomer as a blending of Everly Brothers singing and Smothers Brothers joking. Last but not least, there was the hilarious and acrobatic singing of Nancy and Beth (aka Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt). During the two hours of nonstop entertainment there was something for everyone. Most importantly, were the stories of concern for the refugees, which each one of the musicians related. There are, of course, many American and international nonprofit organizations responding to the crisis of 63.5 million refugees. The concert tour certainly raised money more than a half million dollars! but, just as importantly, it raised the consciences of its listeners. As Emmylou Harris stated, I believe we are a good country with a good heart, but we could do more. We will celebrate a special All Souls Day Evening Prayer on Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30pm in the Church. We will gather to pray and sing as we remember our beloved deceased. All are invited to bring a framed photograph of loved ones for our table of remembrance; the table will remain in church throughout the month. Weather permitting, we will also hold a service earlier in the day Wednesday from 12:30-1pm at Holy Rood Cemetery (2126 Wisconsin Ave. NW). IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY An Ignatian Examen for Civic Life Adapted from the Ignatian Solidarity Network - used with permission of ignatiansolidarity.net Begin with a Prayer of Gratitude Consider current realities of our country -- for what and for whom are you most grateful? Invite the Spirit of God to Illuminate Your Reflections Prayerfully Review Our Nation at this Point in History Allow your honest emotions and desires to surface. What energizes you or brings you closer to God as you reflect on our country? What distracts you or makes you feel farther from God as you reflect on our country? Listen with your heart. Consider one or two of the strongest desires or feelings evoked by your prayer about our country and bring this to God. Engage God in conversation over these desires or feelings, speaking simply, clearly, directly, and honestly, as one friend speaks to another. Prayer of Renewal and Resolution Ask God for the assistance you need to enact the greater, more lasting good for all God's people. Is there a specific attitude you want to cultivate or an action you want to take? Entrust your desires and intentions to God's grace. A Reflection from the Society of Jesus General Congregation 36 We pray because we want to enter into the presence and mystery of a merciful and graceful God. We reflect because we want to listen carefully to what we are experiencing and not be distracted by fears, selfish concerns or negative interests. We converse with others. We speak, listen and respond, because we desire to grow and express a companionship that is Spirit-led, truthful and lifegiving. - Brian McCoy, S.J. Oct 7, 2016 Will You Support a Woman on Retreat? Twelve women will be on retreat at Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, MD, November 7-9. Each woman is in recovery from addictions and homelessness. Each bag contains travel size shampoo, conditioner, hand and body cream, a toothbrush, toothpaste, Kleenex, a journal and pen, a small stuffed animal, a Bible and a note letting the woman know we are praying for her. If you would like to make a hospitality bag for a woman, please bring it to the receptionist s desk at the parish center (attention Martina O Shea) on or before Sunday, November 6th. The retreat will be facilitated in conjunction with the Ignatian Spirituality Project (ISP).
