It seems that the presence of people, more than material presents, serves as the source of Christ s revelation. I found this to be true this year when I experienced my first Christmas at Holy Trinity; whether through the listening to the children voices of our Holy Trinity School at their Christmas pageant or being present at Holy Trinity s beautiful Christmas liturgies. Certainly one of the highlights was witnessing the welcoming presence of so many of our parishioners as they served the ten homeless guests who came to our McKenna Center shelter. Another sense of the Presence revealed in Christmas occurred when I visited the Jesuit infirmary at St. Joseph s University where I met a number of fellow Jesuits who were once part of this parish community. Beginning with Fr. Leo Murray, who I saw upon my arrival and discovered the presence of two of our parishioners having lunch with him. One could readily observe the presence of joy as they shared their Holy Trinity companionship that they shared. Present in the community were also several other Jesuit alumni of this great parish. Some parish veterans will remember Fr. Jim English who served as pastor from It was Fr. English s amazing liturgical abilities that served to establish Holy Trinity Parish as place to go for so many. Despite significant mental setbacks, Fr. English is present at the community s daily Eucharist in which he and his fellow infirmed Jesuits pray for the Church and the Society of Jesus. Also at the infirmary is Fr. Frank Mc Manamin who as a newly ordained priest served the parish in the early 1960s when Fr. Hank Butler was the pastor. The presence of Br. Donald Dixon made for a special Holy Trinity connection for he proudly proclaims that he was baptized in our church in 1925 and graduated from our parish school. Finally I spoke with Fathers Joe McCloskey and George Anderson, who while not based at the parish, served our parishioners in various ministries such as spiritual direction and social justice. In so many ways then our parish is wonderfully blessed by the prayerful presence of the Jesuits who continue to pray for their beloved parish. -Fr. Kevin 1st Vice President Ned Hogan nedhogan@verizon.net 2nd Vice President Constance Herron

The Office of Permanent Diaconate Formation of the Archdiocese of Washington will begin a new cycle of recruitment and preparation of men for the diaconate. It will begin with an aspirancy program in late Fall of The initial selection process for this class will begin with a series of Come and See events at various parishes around the Archdiocese in January-March Potential applicants should review the schedule below for the locations and dates of these events in order to take advantage of the opportunity to attend and learn more about the permanent diaconate and the formation program. Applicants must be baptized Catholic men between the ages of thirty and sixty (at the time the formation program begins), active in the parish, and recommended by their pastors. Between December 20th and January 3rd Holy Trinity hosted 10 men from the Georgetown Ministry Center in a winter shelter. The shelter rotates among the Georgetown area churches, covering the entire hypothermia season from November to March. It is an incredible amount of work to host 10 guests for two weeks, particularly over the holidays. Thanks to Mike Conway and Alison Cummings who organized and supported that effort. Thank you as well to all of the parishioners who provided hospitality, food (28 meals worth), and good cheer. You all went above and beyond, giving up part of your Christmas holiday to spend it with men you did not know. And you did it with pizazz - there was piano playing, Christmas caroling, karaoke singing, other marvelous performances. THANK YOU! Monthly Service Opportunities. Our next opportunity is Saturday, January 16th at the Fr. McKenna Center, the Arlington Food Assistance Center, and making sandwiches here at Holy Trinity. Check out all of the details and opportunities in the coming months at

He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2016 Cardinal s Appeal. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) As we seek the kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2016 Cardinal s Appeal. HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL Prayers for Pope Francis Catholic Standard Contest Congratulations to Sophie Drobnick, 5th Grade student at HTS, for being awarded 1st Place (out of 600 entries) by the Catholic Standard for the prayer she wrote: Dear God, please watch over Pope Francis as he watches over us. Help him through tough times, because being a pope or even being a human is hard. Please help him be happy for most of his life, and please try to tell him you think he is a great pope and that you love him. Please help him to maybe be a better pope (if that is possible). Please try to tell him that I love him. Thank you for helping, God. Sophie PARISH LIFE Pilgrimage Opportunity The practice of pilgrimage has a special place in the Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim travelling along the road, making his way to the desired destination. Similarly, to reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any other place in the world, everyone, each according to his or her ability, will have to make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that mercy is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion: by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us. Pope Francis We will have two opportunities for Pilgrimages this year, one to the Holy Land, and one to Rome and Assisi. The Holy Land pilgrimage will take place on June 14th-24th. We will be joining St. Joseph s University and Fr. Brendan Lally on this journey. The cost, including airfare is $3,789. Deadline for submission of fees is February 29th. The Rome and Assisi pilgrimage will be for Holy Trinity parishioners only and will take place on July 9th -16th. Fr. John Peck, SJ will serve as our chaplain. The cost, including airfare is $3,799. The deadline for submission of fees is March 31st. More information on both pilgrimages will be offered on February 14th, at 10:15am and 4:00pm or contact Rose Mary Padberg at rpadberg@. Grief Support Group Have you experienced a death in your family, or among your close friends, and are dealing with unresolved issues associated with that loss? Beginning on Saturday, February 6th, grief support group meetings will be held on six consecutive Saturdays to deal with such issues. All of the meetings will be held in the Upper Room at Holy Trinity, which is located on the second floor of the Parish Center. The sessions will run from 10:30am to 12:30pm. For further information on the group, and to register, please contact Maureen Leventhal at or leventhals@verizon.net. Book Discussion Session Begins on Wednesday, January 13th, 7:15pm in the Lower School "Big Room". Please see /parishlife/ bookdiscussiongroup for more details about the book and future books.
