1 Holy Trinity Catholic Church Washington, DC Advent is Coming! Many of us are busy preparing menus, travel arrangements, hospitality and schedules as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Once the last of the leftovers have been consumed and the pace of entertaining has slowed, and before the December shopping list begins to take shape, take a moment for yourself. Breathe in, breath out. Advent is coming. Advent begins the Church s liturgical year on December 2 and encompasses the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The season is a time for you to pause, reflect, and prepare for the gift of God s love coming to you through the baby Jesus. You are invited to live our mission this Advent season, and we are sharing the Advent offerings in advance so that you can prepare. On pages 4 and 5, you will find a listing of the many opportunities available for you take a moment for yourself and to accommodate, celebrate and transform as we prepare for the arrival of Christ. This has been especially true for November of The month began, of course, with the feasts of All Saints and All Souls that called us to reflect upon our call to holiness within the allotted time we have on earth. A few days later, we as citizens engaged in American history by voting in an election with the highest voter turnout for midterms in over a century. Then, on November 11, a day which marked the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending World War I, we were reminded of the heroic and historic sacrifices of millions who served their respective nations during that tragic time. Coincidentally, November has been a month when several events have taken place in the parish, which are also historic. First, on November 4, there was the Parish Open Forum for Action, when more than 130 parishioners and guests met for two and a half hours to consider the responses compiled during the Listening Sessions of our parish s Season of Discernment. Through the lively and prayerful voices expressed by so many during the forum, one had a sense that participants sensed that they were engaged in a historic process of repairing the Church. There have been Forum follow up meetings since November 4. One occurred this past Tuesday when the Ad Hoc committee, the lay leadership group which organized the forum, met to determine the next steps. Their recommendations were in turn sent to the Parish s Pastoral Council who met this past Wednesday to ascertain the status of the forum s recommendations and determine which suggestions need further research. Further information about this historic Parish Open Forum for Action will be forthcoming through this bulletin and our parish website. In addition, a sense of Holy Trinity s liturgical history was on display this past Saturday as an audience of some 250 participants assembled in the church and enjoyed for two hours the experience of religious composer, David Haas. Listening to him introduce each song, many of which have over the past several decades been sung by choir and congregations alike was a genuine graced experience. Finally, a third historical moment in Holy Trinity s history happened this past Tuesday when we announced to the press that Holy Trinity, Georgetown University and the Archdiocese of Washington, have entered into a shared agreement on the use of Holy Rood Cemetery. In effect, the agreement allows our parish to begin to build a columbarium at the cemetery. From 1832 until the later part of the 20th century parishioners from the parish have had their remains buried there. With this agreement, we can now set our sights on November of 2019 when the Holy Trinity Columbarium at Holy Rood Cemetery will receive the cremains of present and future parishioners. I readily imagine that in November of 2019 there will be more historical moments about Holy Trinity s past, present and future to recognize and share. Youth Ministry Lynne Udalov (202) ludalov@

Build Your Toolbox for Justice II Racial Justice Georgetown University professor Marcia Chatelain will lead a discussion about race, historical structures that created racial inequities, and what we as people of faith are called to do to remedy those inequities. We will look at the lingering effects of these historical problems across a variety of issues such as education, poverty and health care. Welcome a New Liturgical Calendar Many of our favorite Gospel stories and parables are ones that only appear in Luke s Gospel, like the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan, The Rich Man and Lazarus, and the Tax Collector, Zacchaeus. As we prepare to read Luke s Gospel in the coming liturgical year, delving into the richness of Luke s imagination will afford us opportunities as a parish to deepen our Ignatian heritage. Professor Alan Mitchell of Georgetown University will present on the Gospel of Luke on December 2 at 10:10am in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. This evening of supper, fellowship, and prayer brings together Ignatian and 12-step traditions. A simple meal of soup and bread will be followed by prayer and discussion. Holy Trinity Time Capsule Icon Exhibit: Holy Icons December 9, 10am 2pm, Chapel Gallery You are invited to join the Iconographers Guild for a prayerful exhibition of icons they have written/ painted on the grounds of Holy Trinity. Discuss the Life of Thomas Merton December 9, 10:10am, St. Ignatius Chapel "On the last day of January, 1915, under the sign of the Water Bearer, in a year of a great war, and down in the shadow of some French mountains on the border of Spain, I came into the world." These opening words from the spiritual classic, The Seven Story Mountain, served as the way by which Thomas Merton's described his birth; on December 10, 1968 the world was shocked with Merton's sudden death while on a pilgrimage to Thailand. On the occasion of this 50th Anniversary of Merton's death, Fr. Kevin Gillespie will offer an overview of Merton's life and legacy. Discussion will follow the presentation. Connect through the Jesse Tree December 16, 10:10am, Church The Sunday Morning RE students (grades 4-6) will share the stories of our prophets, heroines and heroes of the Hebrew Scripture. Toy Sunday Linking up with another with a gesture of love is the way Fr. Larry Madden, S.J. described the outpouring of gifts from the children on Toy Sunday in his Family Mass homily (1987). Toy Sunday began in 1969 as a practice of faith formation, a lesson for the giver. On the Third Sunday of Advent, children were asked to donate a toy, bike or game to the collection. Continuing our message of service to others, Holy Trinity would deliver toys to residents of Sursum Corda, a Catholic sponsored housing and apartment complex at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue, for nearly four decades. The opportunity to share gifts with others evolved into the Giving Tree program parishioners support during the Christmas Season. Have you taken your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) yet for 2018? If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a contribution to Holy Trinity parish or school directly from your Traditional IRA. Ask your plan administrator to make the transfer directly to Holy Trinity as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). You can designate the gift as payment for your 2018 or 2019 parish pledge, for the school as an Annual Fund gift, or for a designated ministry at either the parish or the school. You are allowed to transfer up to $100,000 a year to the charities of your choice. Your gift will be transferred directly to Holy Trinity. It is not reported as taxable income (an excellent way to still realize a tax benefit under the new code, even if you no longer qualify for itemizations) and will count toward your minimum distribution requirements for Most important, this act of stewardship will advance your values as a Catholic Christian, so that together as a faith community we are truly living out our Jesuit identity for the better.
