1 Holy Trinity Catholic Church Washington, DC October 28, 2018 No Contract Required: Connecting to the World s Strongest Network Cell phone companies love to tell us how strong and expansive their networks are, but the Catholic Church has them all beat. We ve got a network so extensive that it spans both space and time throughout the world and throughout history! It s called the Communion of Saints, and its members are here for us night or day, rain or shine. They stand by us and help us on life s journey. The saints are our role models for how to live faithfilled and holy lives. They show us how to grow in our relationship with God, in our service of others and in our respect for all of God s creation. With the Communion of Saints, we never have to worry about connection speeds or signal strength we are bound into the mystical body of Christ with them. The Apostles Creed, the foundation of our belief states: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. The core beliefs are also asked in the Baptism Rite when we profess our beliefs as Catholic Christians. St. Ignatius and a Companion by Ryan Cowdin, Grade 2, 1996 But the communion of saints is more than just the saints in Heaven. It is our relationship with them our communion with them. This is a two-way street. The saints intercede on our behalf, and, in turn, we imitate their holiness. Remember, they didn t all start out saintly St. Ignatius is famously the only saint with a known police record! The saints teach us to serve, to be joyful and, when necessary, to repent and try again. St. Peter denied Jesus three times and look how he ended up! They were human like us and dependent on God like us. As we approach All Saints Day (a day so sacred, the Church has designated it a Holy Day of Obligation) November 1, let s recommit ourselves to connecting to this network. Just as we ask others to pray for us and help us here on earth, we can ask the saints to pray for us and hear our petitions. These holy ones in Heaven share in God s divinity, and they love us as God does. This weekend, the Sunday Morning Religious Education program celebrated the Communion of Saints with a parade, a Mass and a community pizza dinner. This time is a wonderful opportunity to bring saints into our everyday life and incorporate them into family traditions. For instance, find out which saint shares your birthday and learn about that saint. Learn your or your child s name saint and celebrate that feast day. Or perhaps there s a saint important to your family heritage or your profession. Incorporate a litany of family saints into your prayer practice. We can turn to saints to pray for us in all kinds of situations, both good and bad. When you re in need of assistance, whether it s with your children or your laptop or even DC traffic, there is a saint waiting to connect with you, asking, Can you hear me now? Often referred to as The Sermon on the Amount, we will offer an overview of parish activities and the financial accounts that fund the plethora of our parish programs. Copies of our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2018 will also be made available beforehand. In addition, next Sunday from 2:30-5:15pm in Trinity Hall, we will have a Next Steps Parish Forum in which in response to the crisis in the Catholic Church. Parishioners will be invited to discuss the various ideas and actions generated by parishioner s and the more than dozen Listening Sessions we have held the past several months as part of our parish s Season of Discernment. The forum will offer a variety of group discussions arranged by the following thematic categories: Church Structure, Transparency and Accountability, Supporting Survivors and Their Families, and Prayer. You may RSVP for the forum and indicate which thematic category you plan to attend at I believe that having this Parish Forum the same day as a report on the financial state of our parish will serve as a way to contextualize how our parishioners, past and present, have been asked to face boldly and generously crises of our Church. Such dedication and determination to a vibrant community of faith has for generations been the trademark of Holy Trinity parishioners. In the 1960s, when the Second Vatican Council recognized the vital role of the laity and challenged the laity to discern the signs of the times, parishioners began responding in ways that were courageous, organized and rooted in prayer. Often, financial resources were asked for and then generously provided whereby programs that directly responded to the signs of the times were initiated and sustained. Our Next Steps Parish Forum will be an instance of Holy Trinity parishioners once again responding to the signs of the times. Your responses individually and collectively, of course, require resources. In reading and reflecting upon the Annual Report please recognize that our parish programs, both in quantity and quality, require financial support. Your annual Parish Pledge enables us to maintain our Christian mission and to sustain the personnel required and the space and the materials that they require. However, we encourage parishioners to mention specific persons by name during the General Intercessions when invited to do so by the presider. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of conversion and faith formation for individuals who are interested in living the Christian life in the Catholic tradition. The Eucharist will be celebrated at 8am and 6:30pm in the church. Holy Trinity School will celebrate the Eucharist at 10:30am. All are welcome. All Souls Day Mass at Holy Rood Celebrate a special outdoor Mass at Holy Rood Cemetery (2126 Wisconsin Ave. NW) with Fr. Gillespie November 2 at noon. All Souls Day Evening Prayer November is set aside as a special time to pray for the faithful departed. To begin this month, the parish will celebrate a sung Evening Prayer on All Souls Day, November 2 at 7pm in the church. All are invited to bring a framed photograph to this liturgy and place it on the Table of Remembrance and inscribe the names of deceased loved ones in our Book of the Dead. If you are unable to attend Evening Prayer, you are invited to bring a photograph to Mass on Sunday. For more information, visit IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Update from the Synod on Young People Yadira VieUyra, a young woman from Chicago and graduate of a Cristo Rey high school and Georgetown University, is serving as an auditor at the Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment happening this month in Rome. She shares this experience: Yesterday, Bishop Mark Edwards from Australia invited me to read with him our small group report before Pope Francis and the Synod of Bishops. It completely broke away from the synod regulations. It was the first time a woman, let alone a lay woman, read a small circle report in the Synod Hall. Thank you Bishop Edwards for giving our young auditors a voice. Thank you for giving women of the synod a voice. I was told Pope Francis smiled as he watched me walk back to my seat. This morning Pope Francis said to me, anoche te luciste. (You shone last night). The Holy Spirit is hard at work at the synod. Movie Moments of Grace: Outside In November 10, 6:30pm, Trinity Hall Through compelling story-telling, this beautifully scripted tale tells a story of yearning and hope. Incarcerated unfairly as an 18 year-old, a prisoner released 20 years later finds himself an outsider, trying to re-enter the world of family and love and community relationships from which he feels barred. Trailer: SOCIAL JUSTICE Thanksgiving for All On November 10 and 11 shopping lists will be available in the back of church (and on the social justice website, under What s New) to assist the Father McKenna Center and Hope and a Home provide Thanksgiving meals to those who would not otherwise be able to have one. Those who attend the Sunday mass or who would prefer an alternative way to participate, may place a check in the collection baskets with Turkey Drive in the memo. Holy Trinity Time Capsule John F. Kennedy While living in Georgetown as a representative, senator and president-elect, John F. Kennedy regularly attended Mass at Holy Trinity, including on the morning of his inauguration. He attended Mass on November 1, 1963, which was the last Mass he attended in Washington. Kennedy is remembered on a plaque outside the church, which features the presidential seal and an image of PT-109, the ill-fated boat he commanded during World War II.
