1 Holy Trinity Catholic Church Washington, DC March 10, 2019 Holy Trinity Time Capsule Birthed from the Side of Jesus The seeking and preaching of Truth is not over...it is a gift that is very much needed in our world today. Sr. Barbara Reid, O.P. wrote and shared these words on the eve of the 800th Anniversary of the Dominican Order in Rome, Italy in They still ring true two years later. Sr. Reid has made her life s work the seeking of truth, specifically, the seeking of others truths in the Bible. She is one of the Church s leading feminist theologians, exploring what it means to read the Bible from a feminist point of view both for women and for men. Continued on page 5 Mitch Snyder Protests Holy Trinity s 1979 Church Restoration In 1979, activist and advocate for the homeless Mitch Snyder, working with the Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV), protested the restoration project of the church in an effort to spur Holy Trinity use that money to help the poor instead. Snyder staged a hunger strike and 11 men and women joined him by standing in the middle of the congregation during Sunday Mass in protest. Other parishioners organized a support fast. While the hunger strikes did not deter Fr. Jim English, S.J. from the restoration of our Second Church, Snyder and the CCNV were successful in bringing greater awareness about poverty and homelessness to both to our parish community and greater national and international community. In 1984, Holy Trinity s Social Justice Tithe Program was established, committing 10% of the parish s ordinary income to various social service, advocacy, educational and Jesuit-related organizations that serve the poor and vulnerable. Who are we on the day of election, when the bishop calls the catechumens to the Easter sacraments? We are an assembly who affirms our catechumens readiness to be initiated through baptism, anointing, and Eucharist (RCIA 9(3)). We are an assembly who says to the bishop that we support them in faith, prayer and example (RCIA 131). From the day of election to the 40-day period of purification and enlightenment when our catechumens, now the elect, are invited into a more intense time of spiritual preparation as they anticipate the Easter sacraments who are we? We are Lenten people, who are called to give the elect the example of [our] own renewal in the spirit of penance, faith, and charity (RCIA 9(4)). The elect look to us to give authentic witness to living these spiritual disciplines and not only during Lent. We are Lenten people who are present for the scrutiny rites celebrated with the elect, those rituals of self-searching and repentance. Why are we there? To pray with the elect that all that is weak, defective, or sinful in their hearts be healed and all that is upright, strong, and good within them be strengthened (RCIA 141). This is our responsibility as the baptized, as people who also know, at times, weakness and sinfulness, and the need to be strengthened. Who are we at the Easter Vigil, when our elect are plunged into the waters of baptism, incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church? We are the baptized who find meaning in renewing our own baptismal promises (RCIA 9(4)), recommitting ourselves to the faith we profess and embody. And after the Easter Vigil, our work is not yet done, for we are to welcome the neophytes with open arms in charity, and help them to feel more at home in the community (RCIA 5). The neophytes are to experience a full and joyful welcome, which, in turn, should bring us a renewal of inspiration and of outlook (RCIA 246). We walk with our neophytes throughout the Easter season and beyond when we are called to grow together in deepening our understanding of the paschal mystery, making it part of our lives through reflection on the Gospel, sharing the Eucharist, and doing the works of charity (RCIA 244). Barbara Reid, O.P. is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Michigan and holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America, M.A. in Religious Studies and B.A. from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
