1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC April 29, 2018 Holy Trinity Joins Jesuit Refugee Service for a Day of Advocacy On April 17, Holy Trinity parishioners Gina Mahony, Annemarie Harthun, Linda Weissler-Hughes, Michael Hughes, Amy Garcia, Christine Moran, and Molly Cashin joined the Jesuit Refugee Service USA for an advocacy day on Capitol Hill. Parishioners met with our Congressional delegations, including the offices of Senators Kaine and Warner and Representatives Beyer, and Connolly of Virginia, Senators Cardin and Van Hollen and Representative Raskin of Maryland, and Delegate Holmes Norton of DC to advocate on behalf of refugees. The Holy Trinity delegation included Zozan Cheikho, the oldest child in the Syrian refugee family sponsored by our parish. Zozan shared a personal account of her family s transition to the United States nearly 15 months ago. Dozens of Holy Trinity parishioners have assisted the Cheikho family in their resettlement process, providing transportation to medical appointments, tutoring for the parents and children, and, most importantly, our friendship, support and prayers. For many of us, the desire to educate our Congressional delegations on behalf of the millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their countries was inspired by our friendship with the Cheikho family. As we transition with the Cheikho family from financial support to friendship, we reflect on how difficult it is for a family to start anew in a new country. And, we recognize that no one does it unless circumstances in their home country make remaining impossible. That makes this advocacy work important to us. It has become even more important in the face of Congressional budget cuts for humanitarian assistance for refugees, and President Trump s decision to reduce the number of refugees permitted to come to the US by more than 50% since As Pope Francis tells us: On this continent thousands of persons are led to travel north in search of a better life for themselves and for their loved ones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not what we want for our own children? We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation. To respond in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal. We were proud to represent the Holy Trinity community on Capitol Hill, and to share our commitment to welcoming refugees to the United States. We pray that our nation continues to be a beacon of hope for all who seek peace, safety, and freedom. Flowers are peeking up from the ground, and trees are budding. Likewise, in this Easter season, the Church is in full bloom. At the Easter Vigil, we welcomed our catechumens into the Church, and, in a few short weeks, nearly 126 eighth graders will celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation. In the spring each year, we are privileged to be witnesses for our young parishioners as they receive the sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time at our Sunday Masses. With this sacrament, the children are taking a step into greater initiation into our church and we all have a part to play in it! All of us as Catholic Christians share a responsibility to help these children as they continue their faith journey. This is why we have communal celebrations. At our core, we are sacramental people, and the richness of our liturgical life is reflected in how vibrantly we celebrate the sacraments. Our joy in these moments attests to our commitment both as a parish and as the people of God. These Sunday celebrations are a reminder that receiving the Eucharist is not a private devotion. Like a family meal, it is a communal event. We come together in communion to join ourselves in a closer relationship with God and with one another. We participate together in song with responses, with gestures to give thanks and praise to God. We do this with each other, but more importantly, we do it for each other. At the end of this celebration, we go forth as one Church, hearts renewed and ready to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in transforming our world. In these celebrations, we are indeed one community, one Body of Christ. We often sing, Come to the feast of heaven and earth, come to the table of plenty. I hope you ll sing out loud and joyfully as these children come forward. Energize them, let them hear your support; show them what it means to be people for others, to be the people of God.

All are welcome for prayer in the style of Taize at 7pm in the church. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Interested and Inquiring about Making the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises? Please join us for a one hour conversation about the history of the Exercises, the gifts of making the Exercises, and the commitment needed to make the Exercises journey. Participants join a vibrant, faith-filled community of peers committed to becoming leaders in their fields as they search to find God in all things. A CLA cohort meets monthly (3rd Sundays from September to May) to discuss and engage in topics relevant to leadership and spiritual growth. Hosted by the Young Adult Community and open to all parishioners. Ignatian Training Program to Become a Spiritual Director or Spiritual Companion At Holy Trinity and throughout the metropolitan area, there is a serious shortage of men and women who are well-formed in the tradition and practice of Ignatian spirituality. SOCIAL JUSTICE Power of One is May 19 At Holy Trinity, our faith and Ignatian tradition call us to build a more just world that upholds dignity, equality and access to social and economic opportunity for all. Our social justice ministry supports and facilitates living a life of justice and peace, and once a year we try to do this together as a parish. We call it the Power of One. This year, we will celebrate and serve together on May 19. Opportunities for service around the DC area are available throughout the day. On May 5 and May 6 Holy Trinity will hold a diaper drive for the Greater DC Diaper Bank. We will collect diapers, wipes and formula. You may place your donations in the bins outside of church. Learn more at Bread for the World Offering of Letters Every day, millions of people in the United States and around the world feed and support their families in part because of lifesaving programs funded by our government. We are making progress toward the end of hunger, but we live in challenging times. On May 5-6 and May 19-20, we will be raising our collective Holy Trinity voices to ask Congress to invest in and protect key programs that help improve the lives of men, women and children facing hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world. Scholarships for St. Jean Baptiste Students Holy Trinity collaborates with our sister parish in Haiti, St. Jean Baptiste, to offer scholarships for students from the parish s secondary school. Following the success of our eight awardees from the Classes of 16 & 17, we will make post-secondary study a viable option for future graduates (up to 12 at a time). The Scholarship Committee is hoping to enlarge our team of sponsors, each of whom commits to donating $200/year for four years. Institute on Sacred Scripture The 55th Annual Institute on Sacred Scripture will convene on the Georgetown University campus this summer, from June Topics from both the Old and New Testaments will be the subject of presentations by a distinguished faculty of biblical scholars including Ronald Rolheiser, O.M.I, Felix Just, S.J., and Tom Linafelt, Ph.D. Lectures and discussions will enable the participants to increase their understanding of the Bible and its continued relevance to modern life. We will learn about the history, architecture, plants and friars as we explore the formal upper garden, more natural lower garden, the vegetable garden and bee apiaries behind the monastery.
