1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC December 3, 2017 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, As we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen. Last year, Pope Francis marked the beginning of Advent, and thus the new liturgical year, by reminding us that We are called to enlarge the horizons of our hearts, to be surprised by the life that is presented each day with its newness. In order to do this we need to learn to not depend on our own securities, our own established plans, because the Lord comes in the hour which we don t imagine. (Angelus for the First Sunday of Advent, December 27, 2016) Advent, as we learned in religious education, is a time of preparation. We are cheerfully preparing to celebrate God breaking into our lives at Christmas. We do this by embracing anew each day the joys and graces of our relationship with Christ. We welcome Christ into our life in an affirmative way every day during Advent. That is the preparation and the joy. For, what could be better than reminding ourselves each day of the love God feels for us, of the graces God gifts to us, and of preparing ourselves to be receptive to them and to God s call in our life? Cover art by parishioner Sophia Pineda Advent is a joyful moment. We should experience it as such. Not as the hustle and bustle of gift shopping and party hopping; but rather, as the cheerful preparation of our hearts and souls for the arrival of Christ. And, since Christ doesn t only come in December, Advent is, most importantly, an opportunity to remind ourselves that God is present with us all year. What did you get? These are questions children often ask before and after the Christmas Season. Wanting and getting, however, are not just confined to the world of children, for we adults often have a way of spending the Season of Christmas wanting and getting. The spiritual movements of Advent may serve as a season to challenge these drives and impulses and lead us to be generous and grateful. Holy Trinity has for many years found avenues to promote the messages of charity. This year, three programs are underway: First, in cooperation with Catholic Charities, we sponsor the Giving Tree. Disadvantaged families request gifts ranging from sweaters to specialized toys. These gifts will be collected on the morning of December 17. Second, in collaboration with Our Lady of Sorrows in Takoma Park, we will also sponsor Toy Sunday on December 10 at the 9am Masses. The parish s pastor, Father Francisco Tovar, shared with me how the parishioners of his poor and diversified parish appreciated last year s truckload of toys. Third, we will provide an opportunity for our children to connect with children in Bethlehem yes, that Bethlehem. When I was on our parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I had the opportunity to visit Holy Family Hospital. Sponsored by the Order of Malta, the hospital is not far from the spot which is claimed to be the site of Jesus s birth. I visited the neonatal unit and witnessed the amazing collaboration of Christians and Muslims working together to save the lives of infants, most of them 10 weeks or more premature. It was an inspiring tour led by a female Palestinian physician who had once been a patient in the neonatal unit. It was then and there that I decided that Holy Trinity needs to do something to support the work and ministries of this hospital. And so we are! Third graders at Holy Trinity School and in the Sunday Religious Education Program will be participating in the Babies in Bethlehem Project a ministry of the hospital s Bethlehem Foundation. In so doing, they will be carrying out the hospital s motto, Peace through Medicine. If you like to know more about this amazing hospital and are interested in donating, please visit bethlehem. Our Christmas programs are only a few ways in which we are reminded through this season, and at all times, that it is better to give than to get.
