1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC February 4, 2018 Praying in Sacred Space: Reflecting on Advent & Preparing for Lent By Marie Djouadi, Charlotte Mahoney, Jan Silvano, and Roger Sullivan During the hectic pre-christmas rush, we are exhorted to find time for prayer, a challenge in the bustle of the pre-holiday season. Imagine the peace of a Saturday Advent afternoon in our chapel, darkness falling outside (once even with snow falling), candlelight and warmth inside. This is what parishioners found as we gathered for an hour of prayer and reflection. In the quiet of the chapel, our small group prayed, reflected, and shared insights from our prayers. As a subset of a group who had completed the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in the 19th Annotation format (technically four weeks), we wanted to live in the Fifth Week by being of service to our parish. With the guidance of Martina O Shea, our pastoral associate for Ignatian spirituality, we met each Saturday of Advent with about parishioners. The theme for these sessions was the O Antiphons the refrains we pray during the Advent Season such as O Radiant Dawn or O Emmanuel. One of the O Antiphons was the departure point for our reflection each week. We drew on material in Sacred Space, a prayer guide created by the Irish Jesuits and published by Loyola Press.. Each session had a similar format: welcome and introductions, a stillness exercise and a pause to reflect on what we really wanted during this time of prayer. This was followed by a reading of the selected O Antiphon and time for silence; some participants volunteered to share their reflections with the group. The session concluded by singing a verse from O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Comments from participants were very favorable, many of them indicating how helpful the O Antiphons were in preparing for the birth of Christ. One participant highlighted the quiet time and slowly talking about each point and allowing reflection time. Another said, It was wonderful. Thank you for preparing this sacred space for us. I was very nourished by this hour and very moved by your attentiveness to making this so meaningful for all of us. A third commented on the opportunity to be silent. To hear others reflections opens me to more possibilities. Many participants appreciated the opportunity for guided reflection, quiet meditation. It was a great way to touch base with God! Whether being part of a band, a sports club or a theatre production, the sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves engages and often exhilarating us. I was reminded of this sense of belonging when I reflected upon some of the past month s parish activities. Four programs in particular come to mind: We belong to the Georgetown Clergy Association. We commemorated the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. January 14 by hosting an ecumenical panel that discussed Cardinal Wuerl s recent pastoral letter, The Challenge of Racism Today. The panel comprised Rev. Robert Pines from First Baptist Church-Georgetown, Rev. Johnsie Cogman from Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Rev. John Graham from Grace Episcopal Church and Kate Tromble, our pastoral associate for social justice. Some 50 people from various congregations listened attentively to a spirited discussion. We belong to a network of Jesuit institutions throughout the world. On the occasion of the annual March for Life, the National Jesuit Conference issued a 12 page document titled, Protecting the Least Among Us: A Statement of the Society of Jesus in the United States on Abortion. This important document may be found through our shortlink at We belong to the Washington metropolitan community. During the week of January 21-26, our Pastoral Associate of Ignatian Spirituality Martina O'Shea coordinated a retreat team of eight directors who met with 46 men and women in eight different locations throughout the DC area. This innovative style of retreat, which was first introduced to the parish in 1988 by Fr. Jerry Campbell, has themes centered around a sense of God s abiding and abundant love. We belong to the Archdiocese of Washington. This weekend, we recognize having the important responsibility for financially supporting the plethora of programs promoted and sustained by the Archdiocese through the annual Cardinal s Appeal. These programs include tuition assistance for Catholic school students; support for chaplaincies (including universities, the Catholic Deaf Center, hospitals and prisons); funding for a variety of social ministries (including young adults, those with disabilities, and Catholics who are Black or Hispanic); financial assistance for seminarians, post-ordination education, and the care of priests who are elderly or ailing; support for birthing and care programs, pregnancy aid centers and adoption efforts; and support for over 80 Catholic Charities programs, including Anchor Mental Health and the Spanish Catholic Center. Our parish engages in a spirit of belonging that unites us with so many people of good will. Most importantly, it enables us to believe that we belong to the cause of Christ who cares for all creatures, great and small.

However, we encourage parishioners to mention specific persons by name during the General Intercessions when invited to do so by the presider. Parishioners may also request that a specific person be remembered by name at a particular weekday Mass by calling or visiting the receptionist s desk in the Parish Center during normal office hours. Holy Trinity Music ministry is looking for a few good singers. There are many ways to participate: Contemporary Ensemble, 9am Loyola Family Ensemble, 11:30am Ignatian Choir, and Young Adult Ensemble. The 11:30am choir is especially looking for sopranos and basses, but all voice parts are welcome. The 9am choir is especially looking for altos and men. IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY Inner Peace in Divine Love Retreat at Georgetown Prep February 18-March 25 Registration deadline: February 4 In the Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius Loyola suggests that the Exercises could be made in two ways: the Full Spiritual Exercises (made over a thirty day period or nine months) and the First Spiritual Exercises (made over a shorter period of time). Inner Peace in Divine Love is the first of four retreats in the First Spiritual Exercises. This retreat will focus on the loving relationship each of us has with God. Beginning with our own experience of love, we will be asked to contemplate all the gifts we have received from God. As we sit with this love, we may seek Christ s inner peace and the desire to put our love into action. This retreat will meet on Sundays at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, MD. SOCIAL JUSTICE Coffee after Select Masses Today Our Haiti sister parish committee, St. Jean Baptiste, will be selling fair trade Haitian coffee in McKenna after Mass at 7:30am, 9am & 11:30am. The coffee is grown by an association that includes the farmers in our sister parish and its sales support their work. Love Your Neighbor Campaign On February 11 Holy Trinity will join the Ignatian Solidarity Network and Jesuit institutions across the country in encouraging our members of Congress to Love Their Neighbors. We will do this by creating and sending Valentine s Day cards after each Mass in McKenna Hall. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/ FAITH FORMATION VIRTUS Training VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children will be offered at Holy Trinity February 11 from 12-3pm in Trinity Hall. February 4, 2018 page 5 Lenten Celebration of Reconciliation Understanding that the Wednesday evening offering of Reconciliation during Lent is difficult for many families to attend, two special opportunities are offered this year. The sacrament of Reconciliation will be available to all Religious Education students and their families February 24 and March 3 from 9:30-11am. Pause for Prayer for Parents All parents are invited to learn about Ignatian Spirituality and experience an Ignatian way of praying this Lenten Season. Our next Pause for Prayer session will be held Sunday, February 25 at 10:15 am in the Lower School Big Room. You are invited to come and reflect, in a manner Ignatius suggests, on the ministry of Jesus. Children not in RE at that time may attend the Children's Bible Story hour. Children s Bible Story Hour Our Children s Bible Story Hour for children ages 3-5 is February 25 10:10am, Lower School Library and will feature the story of the Good Samaritan. Youth Ministry Confirmation The first Confirmation session is February 21 at 6:30pm in Trinity Hall. All parents and candidates should plan to attend. Sponsors are also welcome. STEWARDSHIP The Cardinal s Appeal: A Time for Reflection You should have received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl in early January asking you to consider making a pledge to the 2018 Cardinal s Appeal. The Cardinal s Appeal not only funds the operations of the Archdiocese of Washington, but also funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. As in past years, the theme of the appeal is, Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33). As we seek first the Kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us through our works of charity, our works of love, our works of love and compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives.
