1 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Washington, DC March 11, 2018 Cultivating a Liturgical Spirituality By David Pennington Last year, I was visiting a seventh grade classroom at Holy Trinity School and was talking with them about liturgy. In particular, we were talking about liturgical symbols bread and wine, oil, water, light and how, often, our liturgical celebrations take gifts of God in nature (grain, grapes, olives), make something of human manufacture (bread, wine, oil), and give them back to God in praise (Eucharist, anointings) and ask to be made holy. One of the seventh grade girl's eyes widened and her hand shot up. It's all a cycle! She should have been given a degree in theology immediately! Often at Holy Trinity, we hear about Ignatian Spirituality. It's a hallmark and a treasure of our community. But, at a more fundamental level, every person who walks in the doors on Sunday morning indeed, any Catholic celebrating the liturgy anywhere experiences liturgical spirituality. The liturgy shapes and changes us. We might not know it, but in the course of an hour at Mass you will have heard, seen, tasted, touched, or smelled something that has changed you, affected you. You do not leave church on Sunday the same person you were when you walked in. Paying attention to the texts we say, sing, and hear, noticing the seasons we celebrate, and experiencing the ritual actions of anointing, laying on of hands, blessing, procession should have an effect on the way we live our lives. One cannot approach the altar to share a meal and ignore the cries of the hungry in the streets. One cannot share the sign of peace without wondering what that peace could do to a family broken by disagreement or grudge. One cannot pray for the dead without remembering that we, too, are dust and we, too, will die. A liturgical spirituality helps us engage the liturgy we celebrate in church so that it can have an effect in our lives. Sometimes we do this without even noticing. We recognize that what we have been given as gift needs to be given back to someone else, that love given to us freely means that we spend ourselves in love to the other, and that in every death we experience, new life arises. In short, the liturgy initiates us deeper and deeper into the dying and rising of Christ. Like Elizabeth said, It's all a cycle! Mass can be more than something you just do on Sunday it can become the way in which you see the world. Celebrating the liturgy and participating in a liturgical spirituality makes all of human living holy. Learn how to see through this lens at Cultivating a Liturgical Spirituality next Sunday, March 18 at 3:30pm in McKenna Hall. If you have any questions, feel free to me at dpennington@. For our adult catechumens, it is the final six weeks of a year-long catechumenate process. During this year, they have been formed in the Christian way of life through their encounters with Jesus Christ in the Scriptures, personal and communal prayer, our parish community, the teachings and tradition of the Church, and the unfolding of their daily lives. These catechumens known during this final period of formation as the elect are ready to commit publicly to living the Christian life in the Catholic tradition through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. As the baptized, we have an essential role in this time for our elect and then some! What does the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) tell us about our role? First, we are Lenten people, who are called to give the elect the example of [our] own renewal in the spirit of penance, faith, and charity (RCIA 9(4)). The elect look to us to give authentic witness to living these spiritual disciplines, and not only during Lent. We are Lenten people who are present for the scrutiny rites celebrated with the elect, those rituals of self-searching and repentance. Why are we there? To pray with the elect that all that is weak, defective, or sinful in their hearts be healed and all that is upright, strong, and good within them be strengthened (RCIA 141). This is our responsibility, as the baptized, as people who also know, at times, weakness and sinfulness, and the need to be strengthened. Who are we at the Easter Vigil, when our elect are plunged into the waters of baptism, incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church? We are the baptized who find meaning in renewing our own baptismal promises (RCIA 9(4)), recommitting ourselves to the faith we profess and embody. And after the Easter Vigil, our work is not yet done, for we are to welcome the neophytes (newly baptized) with open arms in charity, and help them to feel more at home in the community (RCIA 5). The neophytes are to experience a full and joyful welcome, which, in turn, should bring us a renewal of inspiration and of outlook (RCIA 246). We walk with our neophytes throughout the Easter season (and beyond!) when we are called to grow together in deepening our understanding of the paschal mystery, making it part of our lives through reflection on the Gospel, sharing the Eucharist, and doing the works of charity (RCIA 244). Read some reflections and experiences of our catechumens and candidates on page 5

By immersing themselves in the life of a university founded by Franciscan sisters for first-generation students from rural villages, participants will gain not only an understanding of the challenges and joys that characterize the Carmen Pampa community, but also a deeper understanding of how certain human experiences transcend borders. Participants will lend a hand with work on campus (e.g. gardening, child care, English club) and attend cultural activities. Living Our Mission, cont. from page 2 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults at Holy Trinity is year-round, meaning that individuals who are interested in exploring the possibility of becoming Catholic (whether unbaptized or baptized in another Christian communion), as well as persons baptized in the Catholic Church but not raised in the tradition, may come to the process at any time. It is an enriching journey for these individuals, as well as for their sponsors, as is evident from these brief reflections. Please keep our Elect, catechumens, and candidates in your prayers. For more information on the RCIA, go to or contact Anne Koester at akoester@. I came into RCIA as a baptized candidate. RCIA has allowed me to rediscover my personal connection with God through the aspects of Catholic beliefs and practices. Holy Trinity and the RCIA team provide a welcoming environment to ask questions, grow in the faith, and meet others who are on a similar path. Cassie Saenz RCIA to me is a place to be fed for my spiritual journey, a place of nurturing and encouragement for my spiritual journey, and an opportunity to be a part of a community of seekers with whom I share fellowship and a place to speak openly about my experience and listen to others share their experience of living out of the stance of our Christian faith. It is a place of continuing spiritual education and the opportunity to form new relationships with fellow seekers. Judith Carter-Sanford From the moment I started Inquiry, I knew Holy Trinity was right for me: From Peggy and Marie and Ginny (in Inquiry) answering all my questions with a smile and appreciation, to Anne's uncanny ability to keep so many people organized and on time. Father Paul keeps the room light and laughing when people start getting too serious or somber. We have a perfect combination of catechists and team members in RCIA. Even more, I have two of the best sponsors who dedicate their already-full schedule to me every Tuesday for two hours late into the evening. Bonus: My prayer partner ensures that I am supported night and day with her uplifting texts. All this constantly reminds me that I have found a faith community that will nurture and support me in the love that the Catholic faith offers. Monica Suber The RCIA process at Holy Trinity was an eye opening spiritual journey. As a candidate, I felt free to ask questions about God that had always burned in my heart. RCIA enabled me to step into this curiosity through prayer, study, and faith sharing every Tuesday night. As a sponsor I now have the opportunity to accompany others on their journey to step forward as God calls them too. Rachel Grimesey We need additional Sponsors and Prayer Partners for RCIA. If you are interested in being a part of this enriching ministry, please contact Anne Koester or attend a RCIA meeting on Tuesdays at 7pm in McKenna Hall.
