1 Holy Trinity Catholic Church Washington, DC January 13, 2019 Celebrating 225 Years as Parishioners for Others By Ashley Klick This year, Holy Trinity celebrates 225 years as parishioners for others. My family s history at Holy Trinity spans a brief seven years of those 225. During this time, my children have thrived at Holy Trinity School. My son celebrated his First Eucharist here, and my daughter will be confirmed in May and graduate in June. My husband joined the Church September 2017 after being nourished by our wonderful Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and Ignatian Spirituality programs. This past Christmas Eve, my children served as altar servers together for the first time under the watchful and proud gaze of their grandfather. Although my seven years include important milestones and moments, they are just small threads in the larger historical tapestry of Holy Trinity. In my brief time as a parishioner, I never really thought about our Chapel on the Hill as anything more than that our beautiful chapel. Yes, I knew that President Kennedy attended Mass here and I knew that the church and the chapel had been around for a while. But until I started working on the 225th Anniversary Committee, I did not have a full understanding of my church s identity. Imagine, in 1794 when the last brick was laid on our chapel the United States was just 18 years old. Holy Trinity isn t just old it is, in the words of my son, super old! Over the past six months, I have had the pleasure of working with men and women who have a love of history, and especially their history at Holy Trinity. Every third Monday of the month, I have been entertained by stories of past May Days and Trinity Player productions, priests who used a puppet named Mr. Blue for sermons or who invited a circus act into church. I have enjoyed reading about moments in our history through the monthly issues of Pilgrimage to Our Past: discovering our church was used as a hospital during the Civil War, learning about the early days of our school and, especially, relishing in the individual reflections parishioners have shared. Why celebrate amidst the more recent background of scandals and disappointments? An anniversary celebration gives parishioners the opportunity to join together to honor how God has worked in our lives. Over the past 225 years, God gave men and women a vision to build a church. The First Church and later the Second Church, followed by schools and a Parish Hall, then most recently, individual ministries and programs. St. Ignatius of Loyola For many of us, our painful journey began last July with the revelation of credible and substantiated allegations of abuse by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, former Archbishop of Washington, and the subsequent publication of a grand jury report detailing alleged sexual abuse by over 300 Catholic priests over 70 years in Pennsylvania. In response, we, the body of the Church, were shaken, distraught and compelled to action. Holy Trinity embarked upon a Season of Discernment, employing the tools of Ignatian spirituality to reflect, allow space for our emotions, listen both to the movements of spirits within us and to the experiences of others, and embark on a path for reform. First, we prayed for abuse survivors, for the leadership of the Church, and for wisdom to proceed. In October, we hosted a layled prayer service in the chapel. In masses, Fr. Gillespie and our other Jesuits carefully crafted homilies affirming both why we identify as Catholics and why we must prompt reform. Through prayer, we continue to seek spiritual nourishment for the long and uncertain journey ahead. In coordination with Voice of the Faithful, Holy Trinity hosted listening sessions for anyone to share his or her emotional and spiritual responses. Based on demand, we added more listening sessions, and many ministries and parishioner groups held their own, similar discussions. Facilitators took detailed but anonymous notes and published a 62-page document that captured our parishioners anger, sadness, hopes and ideas for action. An ad hoc committee organized a Parish Open Forum for Action on November 4, when more than 130 parishioners gathered together to identify desired outcomes and compose action plans to achieve those outcomes. Working groups organized into five thematic areas: Transparency and Accountability, Church Structure, the Role of the Laity, Supporting Survivors and Their Families, and Prayer. All documentation from this event is available at including sub-group action plans, a Participant Guide that orients readers to the process of discernment, and addresses for those who now wish to get involved. A new year brings a number of opportunities for education, engagement, and action. Some already confirmed are the Archdiocese of Washington will greet a new Archbishop, and the Parish Pastoral Council plans to invite him to our parish. This the spring, Holy Trinity will hear Fr. Hans Zollner, S.J., a licensed German psychologist and one of the church s leading experts in safeguarding minors; Barbara E. Reid, O.P., Ph.D., a Dominican Sister and Professor of New Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago; and Phyllis Zaganno, a member of the Papal Commission for the Study of the Diaconate of Women. No leader, clergy or layperson, can predict where this process will take us. The need and the uncertainty brings us back to humility, prayer, and ongoing discernment for the journey ahead.

Two men return home from World War II to work on their farms in rural Mississippi, where they struggle to deal with racism and adjust to life after war. One is white and one is black. After being away, they find a bond of friendship from their shared wartime experience, as well as the difficulty they face fitting in back home. It becomes more complicated when the white man s family displaces the black man s family of tenant farmers, who have tilled the land for generations. The Holy Trinity Columbarium at Holy Rood Cemetery Holy Trinity and Georgetown University have announced a plan to restore Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin Avenue, including repairs to existing infrastructure, enhancements to landscaping and improvements to the cemetery entrance. Phone-A-Thon volunteers personally call parish households who have not yet had an opportunity to offer a pledge to the parish or a financial commitment for As of this writing, pledges are up 7% a number that is much needed after having faced several years of level income and increasing costs. The Phone-A-Thon is needed this year more than ever as we strive to spread the good news of what Jesus Christ is accomplishing through the worship and ministries of our parish especially in this current moment when good news about the Church is so needed and such a powerful witness! The Phone-A-Thon will take place the evenings of January 23, January 24, January 28 and January 31 from 6-9pm each night. Dinner is provided. PARISH LIFE Book Discussion Group The Holy Trinity Book Discussion Group begins a new book on January 16 at 7:15pm in the Neale Room. The next pick is Vatican I: The Council and the Making of the Ultramontane Church by John O Malley, S.J.Fr. O Malley will be facilitating the discussion of his book on January 16. Holy Trinity Time Capsule Where Are the Bells? Have you ever heard a bell tolling from a Holy Trinity church tower? Possibly not, since the bell has been silent for over 50 years. A small bell hung in the belfry of the original church (now the Chapel) and was run at weddings, funerals, to mark the hours of the Angelus, and to announce the time of the Mass. In 1842, Father O Flanagan purchased a new bell from a foundry in Boston. It was baptized on May 7, 1943 and given the name Mary. Church leaders decided that it was impractical to build a bell tower on the Second Church. Currently the bell that remains at Holy Trinity is fixed and does not ring. It is visible from the Courtyard outside of McKenna Hall. Attention has shifted to the sound within the church music accompanying the liturgy rather than the public tolling of a bell. Celebrating 225 Years, cont. from page 1 in our church, making an impact in our shared history. This year offers us an opportunity for celebration as well as serious reflection and spiritual awakening. It can prompt us as a community to study our past and then look forward to our future with renewed hope and commitment. To identify where we want to go as a community. We are spreading the celebration of 225 years over the next months beginning with a presentation January 26 on the Implementation of Vatican II Liturgy and culminating October 6 with a Founder s Day Celebration. Over these coming months, there will be additional lectures, a historic timeline installation in McKenna Hall, opportunities to talk with parishioners who have been at Holy Trinity much longer than seven years, a joint Anniversary Benefit with Holy Trinity School, an icon and an anniversary hymn. Each month we will continue to publish Pilgrimage to Our Past, highlighting major and minor moments in our story, and hopefully including more parishioner reflections. The 225th Anniversary Committee invites you to study our history and remember who we are and where we have been.
