3 June 28, Page 3 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the Wife of Bath, by this telling remark: Husbands at church door she had five. Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. Rev. James Field, THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, though he was rich, for your sake he became poor (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. Equal rights for all, special privileges for none. Đức Giêsu là Thiên Chúa. Ngài có uy quyền trên mọi thế lực: Bệnh tật và cả sự chết nữa. Nhờ lòng tin của Giairô mà con gái ông được cứu sống, và cũng nhờ lòng tin vào Đức Giêsu mà người đàn bà bị băng huyết được chữa lành. Niềm tin, lòng khiêm nhường của Giairô và người đàn bà đã cho họ được điều họ mong ước. * Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giêsu, mỗi khi chúng con được rước Chúa, chúng con được chạm tới Chúa. Ước chi mọi tật nguyền trong chúng con được lành mạnh. Chúng con dâng hiến Chúa trọn con người chúng con. Xin Chúa ở cùng chúng con luôn mãi. Amen. Như thế cũng có nghĩa là Đức Kitô đã trả lại cho mỗi người trên đây cái bản vị duy nhất của họ, với lịch sử của họ: Lịch sử của sự dữ, nhưng cũng là của quyền sống của họ, của khả năng vượt qua sự sợ hãi và nỗi bất hạnh. Khi đã được nhìn nhận và viếng thăm như vậy, họ có khả năng lấy lại vị trí của mình trong cộng đồng những kẻ sống và những người tin. Vậy ai có thể chất vấn chúng ta với tư cách là chi thể của Thân Mình Đức Kitô và là kẻ tham dự vào sự sống của Người? Chúng ta sẽ tiến đến với ai và chúng ta để cho ai tiến đến với chúng ta? Chúng ta sẽ tránh xa ai và tại sao? Lời của chúng ta thuộc loại nào: Một lời cáo lỗi kẻ khác và làm cho người ta bị đóng băng trong tư tưởng đạo đức, hay một lời kêu gọi tới cái tốt hơn cái kẻ khác đang mang trong mình? Vì chúng ta chẳng được gọi để đón nhận và chuyển tải sự sống sao? TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muchos hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos somos personas bilingües. Podemos leer la Palabra de Dios en inglés o español. Por ejemplo, el texto de Juan 21:15-19, en el que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama. El texto en inglés nos dice que Jesús le pregunta tres veces: Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: Señor, tú sabes que te quiero. La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante. El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno). En inglés, Jesús y Pedro usan la misma palabra, love, mientras en español Jesús dos veces pregunta por amor, y Pedro responde con querer. La tercera vez, Jesús se acopla a Pedro y sólo pregunta en torno al querer, reconociendo que en ese momento, Pedro no puede darle más que eso. Jesús le asegura que algún día Pedro sería capaz del amor ágape entregando su vida por él. Jesús se acopla a nosotros pidiendo lo que le podemos dar y ayudándonos a crecer hasta que podamos darle toda nuestra vida. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM. EL SEÑOR DE LA VIDA En este tiempo tan fecundo del año nuestras lecturas dominicales rebosan con vida y abundancia. Tanto la primera lectura, del libro de la Sabiduría, como la tercera del Evangelio de san Marcos nos aseguran que Dios no creó la muerte, ni quiere que suframos de ninguna enfermedad. Fue por la envidia del diablo que la muerte entró al mundo, según nos dice el Sabio. Y lo que san Marcos nos cuenta sobre la curación de la hemorroisa y cómo revivió la hija de Jairo nos muestran claramente que Jesús viene de Dios. Como Hijo de Dios, Jesús no quiere que nadie sufra enfermedad ni muerte. Pero en el contexto de tanto poder, la segunda lectura, de la segunda carta de san Pablo a los corintios, nos presenta un fuerte contraste. Jesús, que puede levantar a los muertos a una nueva vida, "siendo rico se hizo pobre por ustedes" (2 Corintios 8:9). Así pues, la nueva vida que recibimos como regalo de Cristo exige una respuesta: nuestra caridad. J. S. Paluch Co.
