The name Pentecost comes from the Greek for fiftieth day. Its origins relate to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem fifty days after Easter. We celebrate today with a special children s procession.

Thanksgiving and Profession of Faith The minister offers a prayer of thanksgiving and then invites the parents, the new members, and the whole congregation to share in making a statement of faith by responding with the words in bold. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in God the Father. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us, and rose again? I believe and trust in God the Son. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God, and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Dedication There follows a prayer of dedication. The congregation responds by reading the words in bold. Loving Father, these ears were made for listening to your word and for gaining understanding. May they one day hear your voice. This mouth was made for speaking your truth and feasting at your table. May it one day proclaim the faith of your church. This nose was made for sustaining life and breathing the breath of your Spirit. May it one day sense your presence. These hands were made for touching your wounds and holding fast to what is good. May they one day be cradled in your hands. Welcoming of New Members The minister asks questions to the new members and invites all members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel to stand and respond.

Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for groundskeepers at Duke and the way they make the campus more beautiful through landscaping, planting, and pruning. The ushers bring a set of small pruning shears to the altar. In Durham, we remember those who call the community to a more faithful stewardship of creation through their concern for the environment. Wine is used for communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. 8 About Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Joy Moore as the Clevus F. and Lilla Hawkins Boyles Guest Preacher. Dr. Moore is the Associate Dean for Black Church Studies and Church Relations at Duke Divinity School. An ordained elder in of the West Michigan Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Joy has served in Michigan pastorates since Prior to moving to Duke University, Dr. Moore was Assistant Professor of Preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary. She specializes in Christian formation, homiletics, and practical theology, focusing on Christian formation in postmodern culture. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for the worship service today are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support human service organizations in the greater Durham area. These nonprofit organizations are identified to receive funds by a panel of Congregation members, Friends, and students. The grant-making process not only benefits people in need, but also seeks to introduce students to faithful stewardship and community development. Today s Guest Choir The Choir School at St. Peter s Episcopal Church in Charolotte is dedicated to providing quality music education and performance opportunities to talented boys and girls throughout the area, without regard to religious, racial, or economic differences. Founded in 1993, the choir is now composed of over 100 auditioned boys and girls, ages 8-18, in five separate choirs and is funded through private and corporate donations. The choirs perform three major concerts at St. Peter s throughout the year, perform in and around Charlotte as time allows and the touring choirs travel each summer for a week, singing daily in churches, retirement centers, etc. along the East Coast. Every four years, the teen choir, the MasterSingers travel to England to perform in the great Anglican cathedrals. Visit their website at for more information. Summer Choir Duke Chapel welcomes singers to its Summer Choir. The summer choir assists in leading worship through August 14, except for July 3 and July 31. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Allan Friedman. Regular rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Call for details. 9 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all: Congregational Meeting on June 26 Members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel are asked to attend a special called meeting for the purpose of voting on the recommended candidate for Senior Pastor. The by-laws require that a quorum of the membership be present and that ninety percent of the votes be in favor of the candidate. The meeting will be held in the basement lounge of the Chapel immediately following worship on June 26. Local Missions Collection The Local Missions and Outreach Committee is collecting items for farm workers today through June 19. Donations of hats, light-weight long-sleeved shirts, boots, and gloves can be placed in the back pew for delivery. Cash donations or checks will be accepted as well. Please make out the check to the Congregation at Duke Chapel with farm workers in the memo. Interfaith Hospitality Network The Congregation is looking for volunteers to provide a meal or stay as an overnight host at Antioch Baptist Church during the coming week (today through June 19) as part of supporting the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Durham. Dinner at Urban Ministries Each month the Congregation provides a meal for homeless guests at Urban Ministries of Durham. Bach s Mass in B-minor Tonight The Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham, the acclaimed 32-voice chorus founded and directed by Rodney Wynkoop, will present Bach s monumental work for orchestra, soloists, and chorus this evening at 7:00 p.m. The concert celebrates the 15th anniversary of the group s founding in 1996 and features many singers from the Chapel Choir, Vespers Ensemble, and the Choral Society of Durham.
