1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship First Sunday in Lent March 13, 2011 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God A Prophet in the Wilderness, by William Blake, c Today is the first Sunday in the season of Lent, when we are invited to examine the roots of our Christian discipleship and identify Jesus journey to the cross. The early Sundays are a wilderness time, an opportunity to go deep into our hearts and the souls of our communities, to recognize the horror and depth of our estrangement from God, and to begin systematically to put things right. It has been our tradition at the Chapel to chant the Great Litany during Lent, often on the first Sunday. This year the Chapel will chant the litany next week after the choir returns from spring break. The Chapel observes the tradition of removing Alleluias or flowers in the sanctuary during Lent: these will return with a burst of joy on Easter Day.

Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for Duke Forest and all those who work to cultuviate and maintain it for the enjoyment of so many people. The ushers bring a branch to the altar. In Durham we remember those who strive to tell truthful local histories. A representative brings forward a tobacco leaf. *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical Setting D, on page 23 of the hymnal) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. 6 About Today s Guest Preacher Our Peter Gomes Guest Preacher this morning is The Rev. Dr. Clarence G. Newsome. Dr. Newsome is a member of the Duke Board of Trustees, and a former member of the Divinity School faculty, Dean of the Howard University School of Divinity, Washington, DC, and President of Shaw University, Raleigh, NC. He serves on the NC State Ethics Commission and has been recognized by the US Senate as one of the nation s most outstanding religious leaders. Newsome is the recipient of B.A (T 72)., M.Div. ( 75), and Ph.D. (G 82) degrees from Duke. He was the first African American in North Carolina to attend Duke on an athletic scholarship, Duke s first African American student commencement speaker, and the first African American undergraduate to earn the Duke s highest degree. He and Lynne (T 72, G 74) are the parents of Gina (M.D.), and Brittany, an award winning filmmaker and composer. They are the grandparents of Kendellyn (4) and Ava, in utero. We are grateful for the Peter Gomes Guest Preacher Fund which was established in 2002 to honor the Rev. Gomes many years of preaching at Duke Chapel. All are welcome to gather downstairs in the Chapel lounge and kitchen immediately following the service. Local Missions Collection The mission collection for March is for the benefit of the Achievement Academy of Durham. This organization is dedicated to helping students obtain their GED and prepare them for postsecondary education. The following is a list of things needed to help the students with school activities and other personal needs: Casio 260 calculators, Post-it notes, dry erase markers, index cards, 1 ring binders, pencils and pens, scissors, rulers, laundry soap, shampoo, deodorant, and hypoallergenic body soap. These nonprofit organizations are identified to receive funds by a panel of Congregation members, Friends, and students. The grant-making process not only benefits people in need, but also seeks to introduce students to faithful stewardship and community development. Stations of the Cross The stations of the cross hanging in Duke Chapel this Lenten season were created by Haitian artist John Silvestri using recycled materials. The pieces are made from discarded steel oil drums by scrubbing off the paint, slitting them down the side, and hammering them flat. A chisel and wooden mallet are then used to cut out the design templates, and finally the pieces are textured with an ice pick or awl. These works of art allow us to see the suffering of our Lord through the lenses of our Haitian sisters and brothers. Organ Recital Next Week Next Sunday, March 20, at 5:00 p.m. University Organist Robert Parkins will present this season s final recital in Duke Chapel: French Keyboard Music of Four Centuries. The program will feature the Brombaugh and Flentrop organs as well as the debut of our recently completed Blue Devil harpsichord. The recital is free and open to the public. Toward a Moral Consensus Against Torture The Duke Divnity School and First Presbyterian Church in Durham are hosting an inter-faith conference on religious witnesses against torture, Toward a Moral Consensus Against Torture: A Gathering of Students, Clergy, People of Conscience, and People of Faith, on Friday, March 25, from 3:30 p.m. through Saturday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m at Duke Divinity School. The gathering is part of a national effort to develop a moral consensus against torture under any circumstances. The conference is sponsored by the Duke Human Rights Center, the North Carolina Council of Churches, and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT). It is open to the public.
