1 Service of Worship Pentecost June 8, 2014 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Today we celebrate Pentecost, often known as the church s birthday. The name Pentecost comes from the Greek for fiftieth day. Its origins relate to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God s giving of the law on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in Jerusalem fifty days after Easter. We celebrate today with a festive children s procession.

2 The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. 7 About Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells as our Clevus F. and Lilla Hawkins Boyles Distinguished Guest Preacher. Dr. Wells is the Vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London, UK. St. Martin s embodies a unique combination of congregational, cultural, commercial, and charitable ministry and mission. Sam has served as a Church of England parish priest for 15 years 10 of those in urban areas of great need. From 2005 to 2012 he was Dean of Duke University Chapel and Research Professor of Christian Ethics at Duke Divinity School. He is now also Visiting Professor of Christian Ethics at King s College, London. He has written 20 books, including academic studies in Christian ethics, theological treatments of scripture, handbooks for lay and ordained ministers, and collections of sermons. His most recent book is Learning to Dream Again: Rediscovering the Heart of God (Eerdmans, 2013). He is married to the Rev. Dr. Jo Bailey Wells, who is chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury. They have two children, Laurence (12) and Stephanie (10). Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers today are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support the Chapel s PathWays program, which offers students opportunities to discern God s call for their lives through study, counsel, service, and community. Today s Guest Choir The Choir of St. Martin-in-the-Fields is a group of expert singers that performs at the Parish Eucharist and Choral Evensong each Sunday at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. These performances are complemented by extra seasonal services particularly during Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. The Choir is well known for its frequent broadcasts on BBC Radio and Television, and has recorded numerous CDs, including Christmas at St. Martin-in-the-Fields (2009). Having toured in Minneapolis, New York, Washington, and Atlanta in 2011, and Berlin in 2013, they are visiting the Chapel today as part of a tour of the eastern US. Choral Concert with Sam Wells The 20-voice Choir of St. Martin-in-the- Fields (London) featured in Chapel worship today, and conducted by Andrew Earis, will present a concert titled Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Wells on Monday, June 9, at 8:00 p.m. at Duke Chapel as part of their American tour. The concert will feature Renaissance and 19th- and 20th-century English works by James MacMillan, Herbert Howells, Kenneth Leighton, and others. Sam Wells will offer insights and commentary about the music and the related seasons of the church year. The choir will be assisted by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham. Admission is free.

8 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Summer Sunday Education Weekly Christian education for all ages is available throughout the summer starting next week. Children through age 3 and their caregivers will meet weekly for Wee Praise in Westbrook Room Children and Youth will sing together forming a summer choir in Westbrook Room Adults will reflect on current events in light of scripture using the Wired Word curriculum, meeting in Westbrook Room Summer Movie Nights Come to a monthly movie night with a Christian discussion this summer on the second Mondays of each month starting at 7:30 p.m. in the home of Lee Lawrence and Terry Yuschok. The movie schedule is The Life of Pi on Monday June 9; The Last Temptation of Christ on Monday, July 14; and Nefarious: Merchant of Souls on Monday, August 11. Reality Ministries works to create opportunities for teens and adults with developmental disabilities to experience community and live into the reality of Christ.
