1 Service of Worship Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 14, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Each of today s scripture lessons emphasizes the desire to encounter God. The Psalmist speaks to a past of folly and ignorance that has been overcome by the discovery that God is his refuge. The passage in Hebrews identifies Jesus as the great high priest who sympathizes with humanity and encourages us to approach God s throne of grace with boldness. In Mark, a rich young man seeks out Jesus to learn how to inherit eternal life. And yet, when Jesus encourages him to pursue treasure in heaven rather than on earth, the man goes away bereft, unwilling to part with his riches.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the Duke University Health System and its dedication to offering care and hospitality to patients and their families in times of illness and grief. Kenneth Goodson Distinguished Guest Preacher. Dr. Mouw has served as president of Fuller Theological Seminary since 1993, after having served there as provost and senior vice president. A philosopher, scholar, and author, he has been at Fuller since He spent the previous 17 years as professor of philosophy at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A graduate of Houghton College, Mouw studied at Western Theological Seminary and earned a master s degree in philosophy at the University of Alberta. His Ph.D. in philosophy is from the University of Chicago. He is the author of 17 books, including The Smell of Sawdust, Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport, Praying at Burger King, and most recently, an expanded and revised edition of Uncommon Decency: Christian Civility in an Uncivil World. Mouw serves as a panelist in the online forum On Faith offered by Newsweek and The Washington Post. In 2007, Princeton Theological Seminary awarded Mouw the Abraham Kuyper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology and Public Life. Mouw has also participated on many councils and boards, including the Association of Theological Schools, and the Council on Civil Society. He is active in ecumenical and interfaith activities, and presently represents the Presbyterian Church (USA) as co-chair of the official Reformed-Catholic Dialogue.

These nonprofit organizations are identified to receive funds by a panel of Congregation members, Friends of Duke Chapel, and students. The grantmaking process not only benefits people in need but also seeks to introduce students to faithful stewardship and community development. Today s Guest Choir Founded in 2002, the Renaissance Choral Ensemble is committed to high quality performance of great chamber choral literature. The choir performs three concerts each year in its native Charlotte, NC. The choir has also performed for many years at Duke Chapel. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Adult Forum On Sunday, October 21, the Rev. Dr. Jennifer Copeland, Methodist Chaplain for the Duke Wesley Fellowship, will present The Legacy of the Great Towering Church. The forum will be held in Room 0012 of the Westbrook Building of the Divinity School at 9:45 a.m. Student Lunch Following worship on Sunday, October 21, the Student Outreach Committee of the Congregation will be hosting a meal for university students in the Chapel basement lounge. Come enjoy a tasty meal and make new friends! You will also have the chance to learn about service opportunities, including Spring Break mission trips. Local Missions Collection On Sundays October 21 and 28, the Local Missions and Outreach Committee is sponsoring a collection for the Durham Crisis Response Center. DCRC provides emergency shelter to women and children in a supportive environment. Currently they need blankets, twin sheets, soap, shower gels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotions, combs, hair brushes, as well as cleaning, dish, and laundry products. Children s Ministry Children ages 3 through fifth grade are invited to attend Godly Play, an approach to Christian nurture that helps children become more aware of God s presence in their lives.
