1 Service of Worship Sixth Sunday After Pentecost July 20, 2014 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God How does God distinguish good from evil? The story of Jacob in Genesis challenges common understandings of what we may commonly understand as good in that Jacob is set apart to bear the promise of God despite his capacity for deceit and trickery. In the gospel lesson from Matthew, Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the weeds. This parable suggests that the seeds of evil and good can grow up together and be difficult to distinguish. There is hope in the assurance that God discriminates between the two, even when we cannot.

We are grateful for its support, counseling, and ongoing care for all those who are survivors of sexual assault. In Durham, we remember those who experience food insecurity and who regularly go hungry. We pray that those who have plenty will reach out to those who have little. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. 6 Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Craig Kocher as Clevus F. and Lilla Hawkins Boyles guest preacher. Dr. Kocher is University Chaplain, Jessie Ball dupont Chair of the Chaplaincy, and Lecturer in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, a position he has held since Dr. Kocher is responsible for overall leadership of Chaplaincy programming and is a member of the President s Cabinet. Prior to arriving at Richmond, Kocher served six years at Duke University as Assistant Dean, Acting Dean, and Associate Dean of the Chapel and Director of Religious Life. He holds a B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill, M.Div. from Duke Divinity School, and a D.Min. from Columbia Theological Seminary. He is co-editor and contributor to the forthcoming book, Frontiers of Spiritual Leadership. Craig is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and is married to the Rev. Abby Kocher who is also a United Methodist minister. They have a daughter, Caroline. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support the Chapel s PathWays program, which offers students opportunities to discern God s call for their lives through study, counsel, service, and community. Today s Guest Choir The Master s Men is a male a cappella ensemble dedicated to providing inspirational music to the glory of God. Its goal is to spread the message of God s love through song, in ways that will enhance Christian church worship services and other programs. Arrangements include hymns, spirituals, gospel, and other musical styles in four-, five-, and six-part harmony for unaccompanied male voices. Since August 1995, The Master s Men has performed for churches or other religious based gatherings in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Visiting the Chapel The Chapel often has weddings booked on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons, especially during the summer months. If a wedding is taking place, visitors will not be permitted inside. Before visiting on a weekend, please call to learn when the Chapel will be open to the public. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Summer Sunday Education Weekly Christian education for all ages is available throughout the summer months. All classes begin at 9:45 a.m. in the lowest level of Duke Divinity School. Wee Praise: Infants through children age 3, and their parents or caregivers, will meet weekly for music and movement in Westbrook Room Fellowship and Story: Children ages 4 through 5th grade, with parent, will meet during the month of July in Room 0012 Westbrook. Parents and children will meet together to hear a story, reflect on the story through discussion and activities, and enjoy fellowship. The topic for July 27 is mission. Wired Word: Youth and Adults will reflect on current events in light of scripture in Westbrook Room Church Picnic The Congregation picnic is this Saturday, July 26, from 4:00 p.m. until dark at Piney Wood Park, 400 East Woodcroft Pkwy. in Durham. Barbecue and beverages will be provided. Please bring side dishes such as salads, fruits, vegetables, and desserts to complete the picnic. A nearby playground and field will provide a place for active play, and the shelter is a good spot for board games. Please feel free to bring any equipment and board games you would enjoy playing. Back Pew Collection For the July back pew collection, the Missions and Outreach Committee invites you to contribute clothing and sunscreen to help improve the working conditions of local farmworkers. Items to be donated may be left on the back pew of the Chapel today and will be distributed by the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry. Movie Night All are invited to view and discuss The Last Temptation of Christ, Monday July 21, at 7:30 p.m. The movie produced by Martin Scorsese was controversial when it was released in The movie and discussion evening is hosted by Lee Lawrence and Terry Yuschok at 109 Kinsale Drive, Chapel Hill. Durham Bulls Game With Vets On Friday, August 8, at 7:00 p.m. members of the Congregation will attend a Durham Bulls game with veterans who live at Maple Court. Those who would like to go to the game ($10 tickets) are to make a reservation by contacting by tomorrow, July 21. If you would like to help underwrite the cost of the tickets and refreshments for the veterans, may write a check made payable to the Congregation at Duke Chapel with Ballgame written in the memo line.
