1 Service of Worship Ninth Sunday after Pentecost July 29, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Christian faith proclaims the radical notion that the God of all creation also cares for every individual. Today s Psalm opens with words of praise, proclaiming that all creation shall give glory to God and speak to God s power and might. In the letter to the church in Ephesus, Paul prays that the church may know both the scope of God s love and power over creation as well as the intimate care and attention to the details of our lives. The gospel lesson in John reveals this breadth of attention with the miracle of the feeding of the Jesus sets his heart not just on spiritual well-being, but also on physical wellbeing as well.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. 5 Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the Duke Office of Admissions. 6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Today s flowers are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to underwrite the costs for undergraduate students going on the Chapel s Spring Break mission trips. Duke Chapel PathWays provides mission trip opportunities for students who are interested in spending their Spring Break in service and reflection. Most recently, Chapel staff led student trips to Costa Rica, Honduras, and New Mexico. Staff Announcement Kori Jones, the Chapel s Black Campus Minister, shared her plans to leave the Chapel this summer. She will soon begin a Chaplain Residency in Wilmington, NC. We are grateful for the work that Kori has done on campus and in the community and celebrate this new opportunity with her. The Chapel s Associate Dean, Christy Lohr Sapp, will be working in cooperation with other campus partners to find someone to lead Black Campus Ministries in the coming academic year. Summer Choir Duke Chapel welcomes singers to its Summer Choir, which assists in leading worship over the summer months. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Brian Schmidt. Regular rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Call for details. Visiting the Chapel The Chapel often has weddings booked on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons, especially during the summer months. If a wedding is taking place, visitors will not be permitted inside. Before visiting on a weekend, please call to learn when the Chapel will be open to the public. Questions People Often Ask - Why do we confess our sins? Sin is not simply something that makes people unhappy or causes pain: it is life based on a false story, one that leads to worshiping something other than the God of Jesus Christ. However, the Christian story does not begin with sin but with God s decision to be in relationship with humanity and all creation. Thus when there is a breakdown of that relationship, by what has been done, or what has been left undone, it is a tragedy in which the congregation has participated. Repentance means naming and stripping away the things that distance the disciple from the gospel. From personal repentance the congregation moves into corporate confession. It is not just their own sin that separates them from God; sin infects the people of God as a whole. In confessing sin, we recognize that this congregation has joined, even in the past week, in the catastrophe of discarding God s everlasting invitation to worship and friendship.

7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Backpack Collection The Local Missions and Outreach Committee will be collecting back-to-school supplies for local Durham students with limited resources. Items needed include backpacks, scissors, paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, 3-ring binders, pocket folders, erasers, scissors, rulers, markers, crayons, glue, and construction paper. Monetary donations will be accepted as well. Donated supplies may be dropped off in the back pew in the Chapel on Sunday August 5 and August 12. First Friday Young Adult/Professionals Dinner Join the 20- and 30-somethings of the Congregation on Friday, August 3, at 6:00 p.m. at Pop s Backdoor--Pizza South (3710 Shannon Road). Congregation Staff Announcement Sonja Tilley, the Director of Christian Education for the Congregation, has accepted a new position as the Staff Specialist for the Office of the Chaplain and the Anglican Episcopal House of Studies at Duke Divinity School. She will begin her new position on August 1. We are grateful for her service and leadership in the Congregation. We will miss her many gifts, but we send her with our blessings on her new work and ministry. Durham Bulls Game The Local Missions committee, along with Volunteers of America, is sponsoring a trip to a Durham Bulls game to treat the veterans who live at Maple Court. The game is on Tuesday, August 7, at 7:05 p.m and will pit the Bulls against the Columbus Clippers. Sign up by tomorrow (July 29) to attend the game. If you are unable to attend but would like to treat a veteran, please consider donating to the cost of tickets ($9 for two tickets), and concession stand food and beverages. Checks can be made payable to the Congregation, with ballgame written in the memo line. Please note: this is a family friendly, alcohol-free event.
