2 Announcements for the Week *Post Agape meal Coffee Hour clean up* - Week 5: Youth!!! 1. Today, Sunday, October 30 th : Annual Parish General Meeting & Election of 2 Parish Council Members! ( After the Divine Liturgy and a bite to eat at Coffee Hour) 2. Tomorrow, Monday, October 31 5:30 PM: SS. Cyprian & Justina Festivities: Although the commemoration for Ss. Cyprian & Justina takes place earlier in October, we take this opportunity to celebrate their lives on October 31st. Justina withstood the powers of darkness and by her trust in God turned Cyprian from a life of evil; both are a wonderful example at this time of year! Please join us at the Mission tomorrow night for chili & cornbread, a pumpkin hunt, cupcake decorating and the Akathist to these two saints. (Please see attached PDF) 3. This Wednesday, November 2 nd : Early morning Divine 6:00 AM 4. This Thursday, November 3 rd : Teaching Time Together: Join us this Thursday at 6:00 PM for a Potluck dinner, teaching time for about an hour, and then Little Compline, ending at 8:00 PM. 4. 3 Looking Ahead 1. Next Sunday, November 6 th : Next Parish Council meeting & Daylight Saving Time ends! 2. Friday & Saturday, November th : Next Fellowship of the Cross in Ellensburg. 3. Sunday, November 13 th : Feast before the Fast: We will gather together to celebrate the "Feast Before the Fast" our annual parish Thanksgiving meal before the Nativity Fast begins. Please sign up on the menu this week-end to bring your favorite Thanksgiving dishes. We need to know soon who can bring a turkey, a ham or other meat dish to feed a crowd. If you would like to help with some "Minute to Win It" games for the kids, please let Maria Smith know. Thank you again! 6. Tuesday, November 15 th : 40 day Nativity Fast begins! In the Six Psalms of Orthros, we find all the Christian advice, wisdom, and morality. We cannot come to the Divine Liturgy and receive the Holy Communion without preparation. Try to give to others what you want for your own self. You should give and give, without considering your own self. The more you give, the more you will receive. For God will give you His Grace and His love in abundance. He will love you very much, as you too will love Him very much, because you will stop seeking your own self, which seeks to be nourished with egoism and pride rather than with the Grace of God, which provides all the vitamins for the soul and divine transformation to the flesh making one radiant with shining light. I shall be praying that you experience all of these things very quickly, so that you will be delivered from the torment of self-love." One who has more humility has more spiritual substance. The prideful person has no inner substance. He is hollow like an unripened stalk of wheat that stands tall, while the ripened stalk bends its little head. Not only is he in the dark, he is also inwardly disquiet and outwardly agitated and clamorous. For when there is pride, everything one does is merely a balloon inflated by the devil who then pierces it with a needle, so that it breaks and makes a lot of noise. Pride is dishonorable, such a terrible thing, as it even turned angels into demons! Pride brought us down from Paradise to earth; and from earth, it is now trying to send us to hell. [St. Paisios responds to the comment: I have read somewhere that we must dispel a prideful thought immediately, just as we dispel an indecent thought. ]: The problem is that while an indecent thought is easily recognized, it takes great vigilance to recognize a prideful thought. For example, if an indecent thought comes to mind at a time of prayer, you will recognize it and dispel it immediately. Get away from here!, you will say. But in church, if the thought comes to you that your read the Psalter very well and you are prideful about it, vigilance is required to become aware of it and dispel it.
