CONSECRATION SUNDAY October 24, 2004 st 21 Sunday after Pentecost Rev. Steven Everett, Senior Pastor Rev. Adrienne Flipse Hausch, Associate Pastor Gerald Anders, Organist-Choir Director

Four Bell Peal on the Leonhardt Memorial Carillon Organ Prelude: Prelude on Slane (Hymn 67) Ronald R. Williams Ringing of the Wesley Memorial Bell THE APPROACH TO GOD Introit Show Us Thy Mercy, O Lord Eric Thiman Show us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation Call to Worship People of God, celebrate the gifts that enrich our lives! Breath and food, caring people and gentle words, music and colors. Celebrate God who is the giver. We praise God for knowing what we need and for giving even before we ask. Many of God s gifts surprise us: Like the hug of a child, words of encouragement, bright colored blooms from gray buds. Many of god s gifts fulfill us: New vocational opportunities, courage to stand up for justice, words that say I love you. Many of God s gifts change us: Hope when despair rules, forgiveness when sin burdens, Yes when we expected No. Now let our common words thank God. O God, giver of every good and perfect gift, we thank you for reaching out to us, touching and caring, loving and giving. And let our lives thank God, Help us, O God, more and more to become giving people, reaching out to those who lack, touching the lonely ones, caring for those who are troubled, living with all in joy and hope and peace, giving gifts of time and self and wealth. In our giving we grow in God s image. For God is a giver. We become more like the people God made us to be. For God created us for good. In our giving, we become caring stewards for God. Today, O God, consecrate our living and our giving. Amen! Amen! Amen! *Opening Hymn: 67 Be Thou My Vision Slane *Sharing the Peace of Christ and Announcements

Unison Prayer of Confession To fear you is the beginning of wisdom, O God, and to confess our sins can lead to repentance. We acknowledge the wrongs we commit against neighbors; the remarks that aim at tearing them down, the actions that exclude, the subtle and not so subtle distinctions that put them in their place. Forgive us for our love of comfort in a world that is hungry and thirsty. Help us to amend our ways, through the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ... (moment of silent confession)... Amen. Kyrie (sung by all) (Hymn 566) Lord, have mercy upon us Christ, have mercy upon us Lord, have mercy upon us Words of Assurance The Law of God Psalter PSALM 65 (Pages in pew bible) *Doxology: (556 in the Hymnal) Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. THE WORD OF GOD Prayer for Blessing Shield and Defender, how worthy you are of the praises we bring. We sing of your mercy. We tell of your glory. We speak of your greatness to the assembled throng. We need only cry aloud and you hear us, O God. You send your Spirit as our comfort and strength. We shall dwell evermore within your enfolding protection through the faith of Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. FIRST LESSON: GENESIS 1: CORINTHIANS 8:1-7 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. LAY READER: ROMA LATELLA

Youth/Junior Choir Anthem: Sing We Now Orien Johnson - Children give their offerings as they come forward - Message from and for the Children and Youth - Children leave for Sunday School Classes during Hymn - *Hymn: 31 O Lord of Every Shining Constellation Vicar SECOND LESSON: MATTHEW 6:19-21 This is the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Praise be to you, O Christ. Solo: Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem J.H. Maunder IZABELA GRAJNER-PARTYKA, MEZZO SOPRANO Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem, praise thy God, O Zion, for he hath made fast the bars of thy gates, and hath blessed thy children within thee. The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great goodness. The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works. All thy works praise thee, O Lord, and thy saints give thanks unto thee. The valleys stand so thick with corn, that they laugh and sing. Moment for Silent Reflection SERMON Dr. Richard Strum *The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE RESPONSE TO GOD Offertory Anthem: The Pharisee and the Publican Henrich Shutz KIMBERLY IANNUZZI, SOPRANO IZABELA GRAJNER-PARTYKA, MEZZO SOPRANO CHIP PRINCE, TENOR ROLF STANG, BARITONE Jesus said unto them: Two men went to the temple to pray: the one was a Pharisee, the other a Publican. The Pharisee stood there and prayed within himself, and the Publican stood afar off, would not lift so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast; and they said: Pharisee I thank thee, Lord God, that I am not as other men are, unjust, extortioners, nor even as this Publican. I fast always twice in the week, and give the tenth of all that I possess. Publican God be merciful to me! Lord, I am sinful, be thou merciful to me! Chorus I say to you, this man went from thence justified, rather than the other. He that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.. *Gloria Patri (sung by all) (Hymn 561) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Joys & Concerns Prayers of Thanksgiving & Intercession The Lord s Prayer Please use sins in place of debts/trespasses. Moment of Consecration Distributing the Cards Prayerful Pledging Bringing forth our pledges Moment of Consecration *Closing Hymn: 179 A Mighty Fortress is Our God Eine Feste Burg *Benediction Postlude: Paraphrase on Eine Feste Burg Diane Bish * Those who are able please stand The Community Church of Douglaston Douglaston Parkway, Douglaston, NY Rev.
