6 To Bethlehem Joseph and Mary, to find a borning place for the blessed baby, to Bethlehem through cold and snow, and Joseph walks beside her to Bethlehem they go. But who will come to greet them, the pilgrims forlorn, and who will make them welcome on Christmas morn, will someone bring them flowers, will anyone sing, is there somewhere a candle that someone can bring? To Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary, the son of God is with them, the blessed baby. And when they come to Bethlehem, no door is thrown wide, and no one comes to greet them, to bring them inside, then to a lowly manger, where donkey and dove, are glad to make welcome, to offer their love. A borning place they give her, on newmown hay, and Joseph sits beside her, on Christmas day. And here the infant Jesus, is soon to be born. 7 Calvin CRC Announcements for January 29, 2017 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning worship: Our former pastor Rev. Lora Copley preaches from Genesis 18:9-15 and 21:1-7, The Last Laugh. The Ministry of Music is by Coro Polifónico, a choir from the International Baptist Theological Seminary of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both Rev. Copley and Coro Polifónico are presenters at the Calvin Symposium on Worship and we are delighted to welcome them to Calvin Church. Evening worship: We welcome Fuller Avenue CRC to our 5:00 PM service. This is a celebration of the combined KidsHope USA ministry of our two congregations at Campus Elementary School. Arianna Tolsma, candidate for ministry and former KidsHope USA mentor, leads us in worship, with the Junior Bells providing the Ministry of Music. Refreshments will be served after the service. WORSHIP Next Sunday, February 5 Morning worship: We will celebrate the sacrament of the Lord s Supper, and Rev. Scott Hoezee will preach from I Corinthians 1:18-31, Majestically Backwards. The ministry of music will be provided by the Cherub, Covenant, and Sanctuary Choirs. Our offerings will be for Safe Haven Ministries and Benevolence. Evening worship: Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys will preach from Matthew 5: Our offering will be for Wedgwood Christian Services. Staff notes: Pastor Rebecca is on study leave this weekend, having attended the Calvin Symposium on Worship. She will be back in the office on Tuesday the 31st. Presenter: Mark DeKoster As Chair of Council and the Executive Committee, Mark offers a general overview of how Council functions, shares a few examples of the kinds of topics and issues they address, and describes the many ways our congregation is faithfully active in a wide range of Church and Kingdom initiatives. There will be a time for questions and answers following this presentation.

9 Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: Let s talk about our response to the movie, Before the Flood. Presenter: Cindy Lanning Burch Join us for a follow-up discussion on the movie Before the Flood. What are your thoughts on the movie? What are the social justice implications of a warming planet? As those who are instructed to reign upon the earth, what is required of us at this point? Cindy Burch will share information about local organizations who take climate change and the call to be the stewards of this earth very seriously, including Calvin Church s own Climate Witness Partners. SAFE CHURCH UPDATE: Joanne Rozema has volunteered to be Calvin Church s Safe Church Representative. Any issues pertaining to Safe Church or reports of abuse should be directed to Joanne. Joanne will be responsible for any issues related to Calvin Church members while Judy Jongsma acts as Coordinator for Classis Grand Rapids East. BON APPETIT is looking for anyone who is interested in joining a dinner group. We need a few more singles or couples to even out some of the present groups. It s a wonderful opportunity to get to know some members of the congregation that you do not know or get to know some folks a little better. Come and join us!! 11 Growing in Discipleship Transformed for Ministry Welcome to Calvin Church In Worship: Our worship proceeds unannounced and follows the printed liturgy. The Chancel banner expresses the Christian belief that in one God there are three divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The color green represents growth in this season of the church year. Large print resources are available at the information desk. Our facility is equipped with the Loop hearing system. For Children: Ages 0-2: Infant and toddler nurseries are available. Preschool: The Little Children (TLC) gathers downstairs in room 19 prior to the morning worship. K-2 nd : After the Children s Message the Children s Worship ministry meets downstairs in rooms 11 & 13 until the conclusion of worship. Parents meet their children there following the service. Busy Bags for young children are on the picket fence in the atrium. Bulletins for older children are in the rack in the narthex. Fellowship and Information: Everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service.
