2 Time for Resolutions Rev. Chip Hines Pastor A new calendar year is upon us and it is a time to make resolutions. Most people this time of year make a resolution to get in shape. They join gyms. They try to exercise more and eat right and all that. But by mid-january typically the resolve is gone and the new gym membership becomes just a waste of money because they ve lost the zeal. It is my hope that perhaps we can forget the typical resolutions and look at our spiritual lives rather than our waistlines (not that losing weight is bad, mind you). So, how is this accomplished, how can we improve spiritually? One thing we can do is go to daily Mass. It doesn t have to be in one of the collaborative parishes. It could mean finding a parish or chapel or shrine that has multiple Masses during the day near our work or school or perhaps an early Mass before our commute. My first assignment as a priest in Malden at Immaculate Conception Parish had a 6:30am morning Mass, and it was and still is packed with workers who will catch public transportation or drive into Boston. When I worked in the city before seminary, I went to daily Mass, first at St. Anthony s Shrine on Arch Street and then at St. Francis Chapel in the Prudential Center Mall. Going to daily Mass is doable; think about it for your resolutions. I am not the only one who thinks this is a good idea: Pope Francis put out a list via Twitter the other day that included this suggestion and some other wonderful gems I will here: Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are. Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love. Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy. Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence. Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others. Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord. Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people. Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation. Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this. I believe this list could be put on any refrigerator in any house and I intend to look at this list myself this year as I work on my spiritual life. I hope you take the time to look it over and pray over it as we all progress in the way of Christ. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas season and that God will bless you continually. 3 Catholic Social Ministries Collection next weekend A second collection, the Catholic Social Ministries Collection, will be taken up next weekend, January 17 & 18, to support Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston, St. Mary s Women and Children s Center, Inc., and St. Ann s Home and School. Each of these established, non-profit organizations serve populations within our Archdiocese that are on the margins of society and in need of our care, outreach and concern. Cardinal Seán has asked for this special Catholic Social Ministries Collection in response to the call of Pope Francis to be a Church which is poor and for the poor and to recognize our responsibility as disciples to find Christ in them (the poor), to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them and to embrace the mysterious wisdom which God wishes to share with us through them. (Evangelii Gaudium 198) Your generous response to this collection will help sustain the vital work that occurs each day through these organizations and will affect and improve the lives of those whom they serve. Christmas Collection The Christmas collection for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust provided much-needed support for our priests. Thanks to your support, our parishes raised the following for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust in honor Fr. Chip, Fr. Vinnie, Fr. Joe and the 628 active and senior priests who serve the Catholic faithful in our Archdiocese of Boston. Blessed Sacrament Parish: $21,741 Our Lady of Sorrows Parish: $8,245 St. Mary Parish: $12, Our collaborative contribution will have a significant impact on the quality of life programs we are able to provide for our priests in this New Year and beyond. lf you were out of town this Christmas or did not have the opportunlty to participate and you wish to make a gift, please visit On behalf of all Boston s priests, thank you for your prayers and generous support of the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. There will be a 5pm Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish this Sunday. Morality Matters: Fools Rush In A common cause of wrong moral choices is haste. True deliberation requires taking the time and energy to weigh all the facts about both efficacy and moral uprightness. In the rush to solve our problems, we usually want the fastest, easiest, and most efficient solution possible. It is amazing how easily we can betray our principles and put our moral beliefs on hold in these moments. Stem cell research is a perfect example. Catholic teaching holds that human life and personhood begin at the moment of conception. Human embryos are human persons. Any production of stem cells that involves destroying human embryos is morally repugnant; in essence, it is an act of murder. Yet there was such an outcry, even among some Catholics, when years ago the federal government restricted public funding of research involving the production of new embryonic stem cell lines. The Catholic Church was criticized as being uncaring more concerned about ideas than about living, suffering human beings. Appeals were made to stories of those suffering terribly who might be helped if the research would only be allowed to continue. The criticism was lodged that a needless delay occurred that was cruel for people whose time was running out. We were falling behind scientifically in this new and promising medical technology. Today, many scientists working in public universities admit that because of that governmental restriction, they were motivated to research the use of other morally acceptable forms of adult stem cells. The result is that we know more about how stem cells work and their real possibilities for health care than we would have if embryonic stem cells had become the central and main focus of research. In his encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI points out that the failure to solve real issues often stems from falling into the mistaken belief that our most important problems are technical, when in fact they are spiritual and moral in origin. Moral deliberation requires looking beyond the first possible means that come to mind and asking not only what can be done but also what else can and should be done. Taking the time to do the right thing usually pays off more in the long run than rushing in like fools where angels fear to tread. Fr. Stephen Rehrauer, CSsR, Bringing Home the Word, January 11,

Contact Margaret at: youthminister@blessedsacrament.org or x1007 Book Club: The Orphan Master s Son Blessed Sacrament Book Club meets next on Tuesday, January 13 at 7:30pm in the community room. The book selected for discussion is The Orphan Master s Son by Adam Johnson. A great novel can take implausible fact and turn it entirely into fiction. That s the genius of this book. Johnson has taken the papier-mâché creation that is North Korea and turned it into a real and riveting place that readers will find unforgettable. This is an intimate narrative about one of the most closed nations on earth. Newcomers are always welcome. Christmas Flower Donations In addition to those donors listed on Christmas Day, the following also donated to the Christmas flowers in our church. Please pray for their intentions: Filomena Tarara Raymond, Blanche, Thomas, & Leona Paquette Stephen Forkin Timothy Forkin Joseph and Nicholas Ginalli 4

5 Who Wants to Be an Altar Server? Would you like to be part of select group of boys and girls in your parish who serve at Mass? Do you want to represent your community as a Catholic, and assist as we celebrate the Sacrifice of Christ? If so, please send an to Maura Clow at clowclan@comcast.net. A final instructional meeting will be held this Sunday at 12pm after Mass. Minimum age to join is 4th grade. No maximum age! The most often asked question by the parents is : What is the time commitment? My son/daughter is VERY busy playing football, soccer, the piano, building a homeless shelter, working on a cure for cancer. We don t have time to serve. We have homework to do. We have families. Don t worry. All the children that are altar servers are involved in sports, plays, and community service. They all also have families and commitments, and homework. The time commitment averages to be once a month, for one hour. And the more servers we have, the more flexible the schedule. It is adapted every 3 months and accommodates seasonal changes and personal schedules. Time commitment is not a concern in your ability to serve. Desire to participate in the Mass and be an integral part of your parish community is the motivator to become an altar server. We would love to have you join us. Prayers For Our Service Members Zachary Bannon Frank L. Brunetta Peter Conroy Michael McKay Matthew McKay Robert Dunne, Jr. Michael Edwards Caitlin Brunetta Kyle Bradbury Timothy Merrigan Al Goetz Kevin Day Francesco Carpeno(Lamperti) Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Please remember our military in your prayers. To add or remove a name, call Marie x1024. Sung Acclamations During Mass We encourage you to sing your faith each week at Mass, and we welcome your singing of our Eucharistic acclamations in particular! During the seasons of Advent and Christmas we will be singing the familiar Mass of Creation for our sung acclamations during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We invite you to sing with us! You will find the music at the back of the pew hymnal beginning at #881. Please lift your voices by praising God in song! Prayer Line If you have something or someone you would like us to pray for, call the Prayer Line at and a group of prayerful parishioners will add your intentions to their daily prayer. Prayer works! Remember in Your Prayers We are asked to remember in our prayers all our shut-ins, our unemployed, our sick, our grieving, and our own parish dead. Blessed Sacrament Parish Jesus rises from the waters; the world rises with him. The heavens like Paradise with its flaming sword, closed by Adam for himself and his descendants, are rent open. The Spirit comes to him as to an equal, bearing witness to his Godhead. A voice bears witness to him from heaven, his place of origin. The Spirit descends in bodily form like the dove that so long ago announced the ending of the flood and so gives honor to the body that is one with God. from a sermon by St. Gregory Nazianzen 5

9 The Anointing The Liturgy last week revealed the mystery of God s plan that in Jesus all peoples, symbolized by the Magi, have been made co-heirs to the blessings promised Israel. This week, we re shown how we claim our inheritance. Jesus doesn t submit to John s baptism as a sinner in need of purification. He humbles Himself to pass through Jordan s waters in order to lead a new exodus opening up the promised land of heaven so that all peoples can hear the words pronounced over Jesus today, words once reserved only for Israel and its king: that each of us is a beloved son or daughter of God (see Genesis 22:2; Exodus 4:22; Psalm 2:7). Jesus is the chosen servant Isaiah prophesies in today s First Reading, anointed with the Spirit to make things right and just on earth. God puts His Spirit upon Jesus to make Him a covenant of the people, the liberator of the captives, the light to the nations. Jesus, today s Second Reading tells us, is the One long expected in Israel, anointed with the Holy Spirit and power. The word Messiah means one anointed with God s Spirit. King David was the anointed of the God of Jacob (see 2 Samuel 23:1-17; Psalm 18:51; 132:10,17). The prophets taught Israel to await a royal offshoot of David, upon whom the Spirit would rest (see Isaiah 11:1-2; Daniel 9:25). That s why people of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to John. But it isn t John they re looking for. God confirms with His own voice what the Angel earlier told Mary Jesus is the Son of the Most High, come to claim the throne of David forever (see Luke 1:32-33). In the Baptism that He brings, the voice of God will hover over the waters as fiery flame, as we sing in today s Psalm. He has sanctified the waters, made them a passage-way to healing and freedom a fountain of new birth and everlasting life.
