2 Our Citizenship is in Heaven Rev. Chip Hines Pastor Saint Paul tells us on this Second Sunday of Lent that our citizenship is in heaven and maybe you wonder what that means. One possibility is that it means we imitate Christ, the one who saved us for heaven and grants us our citizenship there. But do we try to imitate Him? That s the bigger question isn t it? If we try to imitate Christ my guess is sometimes we will be successful and sometimes not, but we must alo continue trying. Imitating Christ can take many forms, but one important form is being careful with what we say about others. Gossip. It seems so harmless doesn t it? A funny word here; a strategic slam there, all the while smiling as the person being gossiped about may not even know about, at least at first. As someone who hears many confessions, I can assure you that gossip is not confined to high school mean girls. Sometimes it comes from the people you d least expect it. Thankfully we have a remedy in the Sacrament of Confession, and during Lent at both parishes we will have extra chances for receiving this sacrament of reconciliation with The Light is On for You. Every Wednesday in Lent from 6:30pm to 8pm, a priest will be available for confession at both Blessed Sacrament and Saint Mary s and in fact at every parish in the Archdiocese of Boston. This initiative begun by Cardinal Sean has continued through the years as a great opportunity for more people to experience God s grace through sacramental confession. As citizens of heaven we must avail ourselves of these grace-filled moments that bring us closer to Jesus Christ, and it is my hope that we ll all take the time to bring ourselves to this beautiful sacrament. For your Lenten reading pleasure, I d like to recommend the book 247 Days: Father Dan Kennedy, A Proud and Happy Priest, written by Father Dan s father, Daniel Kennedy, Sr. Father Dan was a friend of mine at Saint John s Seminary and his untimely death at the young age of 34 left a hole in the heart of the presbyterate of Boston. The book is more than just a biography; it is a father s tender remembrance of a son s journey of life to the priesthood. I recommend it to parents of young men and young men themselves because I believe both audiences can gain much from this wonderful book. Our individual vocations need to be nurtured and whether it be marriage, the priesthood or religious life, it helps to have supportive parents and siblings. I knew Father Dan as a man who liked to laugh and kid a lot, but this book also provides another aspect to the Father Dan I knew in his more private side as well. Parents will learn that often other people see in their kids a vocation they might not see themselves and young men will learn that the journey to the priesthood is often not a straight line but is a journey led by being open to the call of the Lord. I really hope everyone will give this book a read. It is worth your time. Peace. The Confession, by Giuseppe Moltenim Photo by Fondazione Cariplo.

3 Faith Formation Winter Break: Classes are on break until the week of March 6. Enjoy your break! Confirmation: We ask you to keep our Blessed Sacrament Confirmation candidates in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, Feb. 28. We pray that their hearts will be open to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and that they will flourish as children of God, united to Christ and the Church, ready to love God and serve the world. Rehearsal for candidates and sponsors will take place on Sunday, Feb. 21, 6 7:30pm in the Blessed Sacrament School gymnasium. This is only for candidates being confirmed at Blessed Sacrament Parish. First Reconciliation: First Reconciliation for the children who were scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5, which was cancelled due to snow, has been rescheduled to Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10am-12pm. Any child who has not received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and plans to receive First Eucharist should plan to attend on this date. Speaker from Rwanda Imagine surviving genocide, then dedicating your life to finding peace with those who tried to kill you. Join us on March 2 for a special celebration of the Year of Mercy when the Matthew 13 Collaborative hosts speaker Pascasie Musabyemungu. The Catholic Relief Services representative from Rwanda, and leader of the Women Building Peace Project, will inspire you to deepen your Lenten journey and will demonstrate what it truly means to be merciful. The event will be held at the St. Mary s Parish Hall at 7:30pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided by the Blessed Sacrament Spiritual Life Committee. Lent/Holy Week Schedule Palm Sunday: Regular Sunday schedule Holy Thursday: Saint Mary: 7:30pm & Adoration till 11pm Blessed Sacrament: 7:30pm & Adoration till 11pm Good Friday: Saint Mary: Commemoration 3:00pm Blessed Sacrament: Commemoration 7:30pm Holy Saturday: The Great Vigil: This will be 7:30pm in all both parishes. Easter Sunday: This will be our regular Sunday schedule, except the last Mass at Blessed Sacrament will be at 11:30am (not 11am). Please plan accordingly. The Light Is On For You The Light Is On For You every Wednesday this Lent, 6:30 8pm, in all parishes in the Archdiocese, including St. Mary s and Blessed Sacrament. The Light Is On For You is an opportunity to encounter the Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Penance or Confession) and to receive God s tender mercy as He welcomes you with open arms. Last year, many of you shared with our priests that The Light Is On For You was your first time to Confession in many years or even decades! If it s been a while for you, don t wait any longer. For some, Confession can be scary and even embarrassing. We may be too nervous or consider ourselves unforgiveable. Yet with confidence Pope Francis reminds us: How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, Father, I have many sins, and I have always pleaded, Don t be afraid; go to him; he is waiting for you; he will take care of everything. We hear many offers from the world around us, but let us take up God s offer instead: his is a caress of love. Next weekend, the Catholic Appeal will be announced in all parishes throughout the Archdiocese. Please be sure to take home next week s bulletin, which includes an insert with some helpful information about how the Catholic Appeal directly benefits our parishes. 3

4 Blessed Sacrament Parish Ten Diamond Street, Walpole, MA BlessedSacramentWalpole.org Book Club: The Cellist of Sarajevo Blessed Sacrament Book Club meets next on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30pm in the Community Room. The book selected for discussion is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. The book follows three characters a man braving gunfire to get water for his family, a man braving gunfire to get bread for his family, and a female sniper for the resistance. Their stories revolve around a cellist who comes out into the bombedout street each day for 22 days to play a song to honor the 22 people who had died. It is a gripping story. We always welcome anyone who would like to join us to discuss the books we select each month. Recent Baptisms The following children were baptized at Blessed Sacrament Parish in recent weeks. We congratulate their families and welcome them to the community: Avery Grace DeLanders Emily Nicole Manning Did You Know? Did you know that more than 20 Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist serve our Masses each weekend? When asked why they enjoy being an EME, one parishioner said, I long to give others the Body of Christ. Another enjoys having one-on-one interactions with parishioners and exchanging a smile when they receive Christ. Find out more about the liturgical ministries at Blessed Sacrament at Coloring Pages for Children We have Sunday coloring pages/worksheets themed for the week s Mass readings available at the entrances to the church for children ages 3 6 and We encourage you to take one for each of your children or for other children you know may appreciate them. 4

5 Remember in Your Prayers Each week during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass, we pray for those in our community who are sick. If you have a family member whose name should be added to the prayer list, please contact Margaret Manning at mmanning@matt13catholic.org or x1007. We kindly request that only immediate family members of the sick add names to the list. Through our parish prayer line, we also remember all our shut-ins, our unemployed, our sick, our grieving, and our own parish dead, including Margaret Iula, whose funeral Mass was this past week. Call with your prayer intentions or to join the prayer line. If you really want to become a saint, I suggest two ways you may accomplish your goal. The first would be to pray always, all the while loving God above all things and your neighbor as yourself. The second would be to die during February, because this bleak month has fewer saints days than any of the other eleven. Note that this feast, celebrated on February 22, features not a saint but a chair. It is (or was) a real chair, a true antique, since a piece of it dates back at least to the first century. It is also a symbolic chair insofar as the feast celebrates is its original owner St. Peter, the leader of the apostles and the first bishop of Rome. He reputedly used the chair to teach and baptize newcomers into the Christian faith. This tradition has been the basis for the use of a special cathedra (chair) on which all the popes and all their bishops have been seated when they officiate in their own cathedral church. On February 22, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI commented on Peter s arrival and stay in Rome. He recounted to an estimated eight thousand listeners that Peter, chosen by Christ as leader of the apostles, began his ministry as the first pope in Jerusalem, then moved briefly to Antioch, and finally settled in Rome, then the center of the world. He also died there, crucified head-down in the year 64. This feast, however, does not celebrate Peter s martyrdom as much as his ministry. Jesus himself gave him the ministry, telling him, Feed my sheep (John 21:17). So while in Rome, Peter preached the gospel to all who would listen. His ministry and dying there sanctified and solidified the infant Church and, to some degree, Sung Acclamations & Mass Readings We invite you to sing our acclamations during the Liturgy of Eucharist. During the season of Lent, we will be singing the Mass of Spirit and Grace (#195,199, ) at the 4pm, 8am, and 11am Masses and the Mass of Renewal (#175, 179, 181,183, 184) at the 9:30am Mass. You may also notice that we will be singing the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass, which the cantors will lead. Please lift your voices in song throughout the Mass! This week you can find the Readings at page 888. Catholic Calendar: The Chair of St. Peter the Apostle even the city. It was in Rome, seated on his cathedra, that the first pope taught the people what Jesus had taught him and firmly established the religious entity that came to be known throughout the world as the Holy Roman Catholic Church. The Church has had its ups and its downs, its days of glory and nights of shame. Perhaps that is to be expected, since it is a church of sinners striving to become saints. Until the coming of the Spirit on the first Pentecost, its leader himself walked an uneven path sometimes bold and brave, sometimes bent and befuddled, sometimes doubting or denying even to the point of declaring under oath that he did not know the captured Christ. Peter was also a man who always repented and eventually rehabilitated. So has, and so will, the Church. As Jesus himself told Peter on the eve of the first Good Friday, I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers (Luke 22:32). That was and is both reassuring and renewing. A royal throne made of gold or precious woods and decorated with diamonds and other jewels symbolizes earthly authority and power. Likewise, a cathedra, a chair, even if made of straw, signifies these same spiritual gifts. A chair can also stimulate love, as the historic piece of furniture called the love seat implies. Hopefully, the authority that surrounds the chair of the pope will lead us to love and serve Creator and creature, just as Peter did, in our own life and death. Norman J. Muckerman, CSsR 5

7 I think people can be divided into two categories: detail people and vision people. Some people are both, but many of us lean one way. Some are vision people, good at seeing the big picture. Others are detail people, focused on carrying out each small step to make the big picture happen. I am, undoubtedly, a detail person. I love a good to-do list (or several), and I m often consumed with crossing off as many items as possible. It feels oh so good! Keep the Vision On the other hand, today s Gospel account of Jesus trans guration is all about vision. The disciples are given a privileged glimpse into Jesus glori ed body and the glory of eternal life. What an incredible moment no wonder Peter wanted to build tents and remain there! I m sure the apostles believed they d never forget that experience. Yet we know Peter later betrayed Jesus, and the others abandoned him. They lost sight of the vision in the face of earthly concerns, which is easy to do. My near-obsession with details and to-do lists came to mind when I read St. Paul s description of enemies of the cross of Christ. He particularly notes, Their minds are occupied with earthly things. Oh dear. My lists are nothing but a bunch of earthly things. They re not all problems, but they can be distractions from God. This Gospel challenges us to keep the vision of eternal life always in front of us, especially as we navigate the mess and to-do lists of everyday life. Our earthly concerns are ever before us, but so too should be our hope of sharing in Jesus glory. Janel Esker, Bringing Home the Word, Feb. 21, 2016 Knights of Columbus Offer a Grant to Students The Walpole Council Knights of Columbus will award a grant of $500 to a Walpole resident who is completing the eighth grade in 2016 and will be attending a Catholic high school during the 2016 academic year. The award will be based on the applicant s academic performance, leadership, extracurricular activities, and their involvement in family, church, and community activities. Applications are available from Jim Cappelletti at jacwal@verizon.net or The deadline is April 22. The Knights of Columbus is a brotherhood of Catholic men who each play a role in improving the world around us. We are united in our faith and dedicated to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. For 107 years, the Walpole Council #1319 of the Knights of Columbus has provided support and strength to our parishes, community, families and each other. Hungering to Give Back This week, CRS Rice Bowl takes us to Laos, where Hongkham is using her love of cooking to provide for her family and feed an entire school. Vanhkham Phengsaphone, age 6, holds a bowl of rice, with his mother, Hongkham Phengsaphone, age 36, and one of his brothers, Khamtanh Phengsaphone, age 9, standing behind him. Vanhkam, Khamtanh and one other brother attend Nongdern Primary School, where they and the other students receive a free school lunch each day through CRS LEAPS program. His mother, Hongkham, is a LEAPS volunteer cook at their school. How do we use our passions and gifts for the betterment of those we meet? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. Thoughts of a Disciple Luke s account of Jesus on the mountain with Peter, James, and John, is rich with meaning. Peter recognizes their special circumstance: Master, it is good that we are here. We don t have to go up the mountain to be with Jesus. When we are united with Jesus through sacraments and daily prayer, we can use Peter s words every second of every day, Master, it is good that I am here, with you! Now listen to what God says, not just to the Apostles, that day on that mountain, but to each of us, every second of every day: This is my chosen Son, listen to Him; Pray in a special way this Lent to hear Jesus voice and pray particularly for the courage to share your faith with others. Introduce a friend to Jesus. 7

During the Sign of Peace, you may find that a nod of the head and a verbal gesture of peace may be gracious and fitting rather than shaking hands. Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are encouraged to wash their hands before Mass. There are antibacterial gels available in the sacristy. Dipping the Host in the Cup is not an acceptable way to receive the Precious Blood and we ask that if you prefer not to drink from the Cup, you may abstain.

In this miraculous moment, Jesus divine nature was revealed clearly to Peter, James, and John. They were able to witness this revelation of Jesus only because they were fully awake. Had they stayed sleeping, they would have missed out. It s an obvious point but one that may need more attention than we d care to admit. Of course we have to be awake in order to absorb the fullness of our faith. If we are not tuned in, not attentive, not exerting any effort, then we are certainly going to miss out. But the fact is that we don t always realize we are falling asleep. Just as Peter, James, and John were overcome with sleep, we too can slip into this state spiritually speaking, we can become numb or lazy and slowly fade away from the fervor of authentic faith. This is why the church, in her wisdom, gives us the season of Lent. This is the time to refocus, to clear away the cobwebs, and to become fully awake. Ultimately, we pray that these efforts will allow us to truly see his glory come Eastertide. 4pm BSP: Edward Grace 4pm STM: Julia & Edgar Ramey, Sr., & Edgar Ramey, Jr. 11am BSP: Martha Vogel 9am BSP: Doris Albert 9am BSP: Bernard Madeira 9am BSP: Kevin Hardiman 4pm BSP: Kay Needham, Cathy Needham 4pm STM: Jeffrey & Victor Serena Everyday Stewardship I remember when I was younger, being on a retreat and praying alone in a chapel for the successful talk a friend was giving at the same time. What was different on this day was I decided to pray the psalms aloud since no one else was there to judge either my singing ability or my mode of prayer. For about thirty minutes I sang aloud, one psalm after another. Towards the end of my prayer time, I felt a very strong presence of God. There is much more to the story, but suffice to say that it was an experience that made me break down into tears and one that I will never forget. God had broken through my ordinary life and was present to me in a way that was extraordinary. I often tell people that one reason I love being Catholic is that for us the supernatural is really the natural. We believe bread and wine become Jesus Christ, we understand the supernatural reality of all the sacraments, and we hopefully are never surprised when we see the powerful results of prayer. There should be no separation between our ordinary lives in the natural world and the elements of the supernatural world. When the apostles see Moses and Elijah before them in this week s Gospel from Luke, they want to immediately pitch tents for them to stay. That is a pretty natural response to the supernatural. What would your response be to seeing Moses and Elijah? Fear? Confusion? Hospitality? Being prayerful is a primary characteristic of an Everyday Steward. The goal is to make our entire day a prayer and to allow God into every moment. The more we practice this type of prayer, the more the supernatural and the natural blend. We become more open to being used by God for his glory. And who knows, the chance may increase that one day we might just say without surprise, Hello, Moses and Elijah! Would you like something to drink?
