2 Planning for Lent and Easter Rev. Chip Hines Pastor So we made it through Christmas, we survived the Blizzard of 2015 and its cousin this past week and now we must start thinking of Lent and Easter. Crazy right? However it is true and so I wanted to present to you now our Collaborative Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter Sunday schedules. This is by no means an exhaustive listing of every activity there will be a great postcard to be mailed to you that shows all that but just as at Christmas, I wanted to give everyone an early head s up as to what things will look like. During this season we will also not have Fr. Vinnie for a period of time as he recovers from rotator cuff surgery. Thanks in advance for your kind understanding. Ash Wednesday Saint Mary, East Walpole: 6:30am and 8am Blessed Sacrament, Walpole: 9am and 7pm Our Lady of Sorrows, Sharon: 5pm and 7:30pm Palm Sunday Our regular Sunday schedule Holy Thursday All three parishes: 7:30pm and Adoration till 11pm Good Friday Saint Mary, East Walpole: Commemoration 3:00pm Blessed Sacrament, Walpole: Commemoration 7:30pm Our Lady of Sorrows, Sharon: Commemoration 3:00pm Holy Saturday All three parishes: The Great Vigil at 7:30pm Easter Sunday Our regular Sunday schedule. There will be no extra Masses. Please plan accordingly. I hope that by giving this information many weeks ahead of time we can plan out our holy season accordingly. Thanks! Photo: Fr. 3 Catholic Appeal This past week, many of you received a letter from Cardinal Seán requesting your support for the 2015 Catholic Appeal. If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider making an early pledge. Our parishes directly benefit from the 50 ministries supported by the Appeal and your gift will help us reach our 2015 goal. You may mail your pledge or visit to give online. Thank you! There will be 5pm Masses at Blessed Sacrament Parish and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish this Sunday. Lenten Mission The Matthew 13 Collaborative will hold a Lenten Mission on March 23-25, led by Fr. Bill Brown, OMV, with the theme of Gather in the Spirit; Sow a New Life. Everyone is invited to all evenings of the mission which will take place in the three parishes: March 23 at St. Mary; March 24 at Our Lady of Sorrows; March 25 at Blessed Sacrament. Please mark the date on your calendar and watch for updates with more information. World Marriage Day This Sunday is World Marriage Day which honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family. Commit to making your marriage a priority in your lives and let your marriage relationship give glory to God. Strengthen, renew, and rekindle your marriage sacrament by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on February 27 March 1, March 13 15, or May For more information call Jim and Elaine Richard at WWME or visit our webpage at www. wwme.org K of C Lent Fish Fry The Walpole Knights of Columbus once again will be serving Friday Lenten Fish Dinners at the council hall 137 Stone St on the below-listed 5 Fridays during Lent from 4:30 pm till 6:30 pm: February 20, February 27, March 6, March 20, and March 27. The price is only $15 per person which includes a full baked fish dinner with chowder, dessert and coffee. Please contact the following member for tickets: Paul Nolan (508) All tickets must be prepaid. All are welcome. Flu Season We need to take care of ourselves and each other. If you are sick, use good judgment about attending Mass and even as you recover, be responsible not to approach the Chalice until you are well. During the Sign of Peace, you may find that a nod of the head and a verbal gesture of peace may be gracious and fitting rather than shaking hands. Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are encouraged to wash their hands before Mass. There are antibacterial gels available in the sacristy. Dipping the Host in the Chalice is not an acceptable way to receive the Precious Blood. LIFT Worship Night Join LIFT Ministries on Tuesday, February 24 at 7pm for an inspiring night of worship at St. Joseph s Church in Belmont with guest speaker Fr. Gerald Souza. Like the recent God of this City tour night at Blessed Sacrament, the LIFT night will include uplifting music, a relevant talk, confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, and is free to attend and open to all ages. A downloadable flyer, along with more information about LIFT, can be found on their website at Come and worship with hundreds of Catholics from around the Boston area! The World Day of the Sick, Wednesday, February 11, will be celebrated at The Father Peyton Center in Easton at the noon Mass. Those sick and suffering in our families will be remembered and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick with blessed oil (James 5:14-15) will be administered to any faithful in danger of death because of sickness or advanced age. Join them in the chapel of the Father Peyton Center, 518 Washington Street, North Easton. For additional information, please call Holy Cross Family Ministries at , ext. 2027, or go to 3

4 Blessed Sacrament Parish Ten Diamond Street, Walpole, MA BlessedSacramentWalpole.org Morning of Prayer We welcome back Sr. Nancy Sheridan on February 25 to lead us in a Morning of Prayer. Sr. Nancy s theme for the morning, Jesus Lenten Journey: A Change of Heart, is certainly very inviting and will allow the group to reflect on the person of Jesus. We will gather in the Community Room immediately following the 9am Mass on this day. Light refreshments will be served. Holy Yoga If you have ever considered the powerful and proven benefits of practicing yoga but have been apprehensive about the intent, Holy Yoga is a time of worship, of praise, and of connection to Christ practiced to contemporary and motivational Christian music. All levels from beginners to advanced yoga practitioners are welcome. Classes will be offered every Monday from 8-9pm in the Community Room starting March 9 through May 18 (except April 6). Book Club: The Church of Mercy Blessed Sacrament Book Club meets next on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:30pm in the community room. The book selected for discussion is The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis. Take a small piece of your time to bear witness to our children. Help them to see what your faith means to you and how it makes a difference. We are still in need of people (11 to be exact) to visit some of our grade 1-3 religious education classes for about 15 minutes; this includes time for questions and answers. During your visit, you can share any faith-related thing you d like. Some possibilities: read a story (we have some we could recommend) share a prayer or song show, and tell, about a piece of art or an icon speak about a person or event that touched your heart and strengthened your faith It can be anything at all from your faith journey (rosary beads, a First Communion dress, an experience, etc.) that might help our children to see different dimensions of faith. Won t you please help us to meet the goal of each classroom having one visitor before the religious education year comes to an end? All that is required is one visit just one! We are in need of the following visitors: 4 for Sunday (class starts at 10:30am), 5 for Monday (class starts at 4:30pm), and 2 for Tuesday (class starts at 5:00pm). And, we have the following dates available for your visit: Feb 22 24, March 1 3, March 15 17, March 22 or 23 (grade 3 only), or April For more information and to sign up, please contact Carissa Kane at c-pkane@comcast.net or Thank you for considering this opportunity. 5

Prayers for the Deceased Phyllis Handy, Jacqueline Butler Catholic Spiritual Writers: St. Bernard of Clairvaux One need not be a monk or nun to benefit from Saint Bernard s teaching on intimacy with God. All people are called to know firsthand the depth of God s love. The spirituality of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux may be understood, at least in part, as a response to the values of the society in which he lived. Notions of romantic love were in the air. This phenomenon (known as courtly love because it largely centered on courtly life) inflated the idea of human love to such an extent that love for God seemed no longer to be the true end of human life. Falling in love was. `Saint Bernard s compelling approach awakened people to the only relationship that truly satisfies: our relationship with God. It s not too difficult to make comparisons between our society and that of Saint Bernard s time. The illusion that love is mainly a feeling and that another person can fulfill all of one s needs and desires has left countless families devastated and numberless hearts shattered. We each bring to our relationship with God the pieces of a heart that is wounded, sometimes even devastated and broken. In the midst of our yearning for wholeness and true love, God steps in and reveals to us that for which we have been searching. Reading Saint Bernard s sermons On the Song of Songs enabled me to discover, indeed experience, my heart s deepest desire: the reality of God s love for me... As I have grown in intimacy with God over the years, I have let go of many of the fears that kept me from truly sharing myself with others. My intimacy with God has also freed me of the sense of shame that once held me captive. I have learned how to become vulnerable and trusting, knowing that nothing can separate me from the love of God. Saint Bernard s lessons on true intimacy with God have taught me how to properly love others. Instead of being caught up in the attachments that often arise from a heart divided and broken, the love of God has enabled the reservoir of love within me to flow with greater and greater freedom and purity. Wherever we may find ourselves along life s journey, God beckons us to himself so he may lavish upon us our hearts deepest longing. Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Written by Ephrem Arcement, OSB. 9 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary Seán Cardinal O Malley invites all couples of the Archdiocese of Boston who are marking their 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries in 2015 to join him for the annual celebration at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, usually in June. Mass will include a renewal of marriage vows by all participating anniversary couples. Family members and friends of the participating couples, as well as the general public, are welcome to attend. More information on this will be available when the date is finalized. The Matthew 13 Collaborative would also like to recognize your togetherness and host an evening in the spring to celebrate with you. So if this is a special anniversary year, please let us hear from you. Contact Marie Martin, mmartin@matt13catholic.org or x1024 Anointing of the sick When you are diagnosed with a life threatening illness, facing surgery, or receiving chemo or radiation treatments, this is the time to ask for the Sacrament of the Sick. This anointing is to give us strength and healing graces to live and cope with serious illness or the limits of aging. Anointing of the Sick is not the sacrament of the dying ; that is Viaticum, which is when a priest or lay person visits the dying to pray with the them, their family and caregivers, and to bring them the Eucharist as food for the journey. If you can get to church, you can receive the Sacrament of the Sick after any weekend Mass. If you are unable to get to church, please call us at and we will arrange to visit you at home. Take advantage of this wonderful sacrament as an encounter with Jesus, the Healer. St. Thérèse s Little Way I have always wanted to be a saint. Alas! I have always noticed that when I compared myself to the saints, there is between them and me the same difference that exists between a mountain whose summit is lost in the clouds and the obscure grain of sand trampled underfoot by the passersby. Instead of becoming discouraged, I said to myself, God cannot inspire unrealizable desires. I can, then, in spite of my littleness, aspire to holiness. It is impossible for me to grow up, and so I must bear with myself such as I am with all my imperfections. But I want to seek out a means of going to heaven by a little way, a way that is very straight, very short, and totally new. We are living in an age of inventions, and we no longer have to take the trouble of climbing stairs, for, in the homes of the rich, an elevator has replaced these very successfully. I wanted to find an elevator, which would raise me to Jesus, for I am too small to climb the rough stairway of perfection. I searched, then, in the Scriptures for some sign of this elevator, the object of my desires, and I read these words coming from the mouth of Eternal Wisdom: Whosoever is a LITTLE ONE, let him come to me. (Proverbs 9:4) And so I succeeded. I felt I had found what I was looking for. But, wanting to know, O my God, what You would do to the very little one who answered Your call, I continued my search and this is what I discovered: As one whom a mother caresses, so will I comfort you; you shall be carried at the breasts, and upon the knees they shall caress you. (Isaiah 66: 13,12) Ah! Never did words more tender and more melodious come to give joy to my soul. The elevator which must raise me to heaven is Your arms, O Jesus! And for this I had no need to grow up, but rather I had to remain little and become this more and more.
